With it climbing big on Apple, returning to #1 in iTunes and top-200 in Spotify, I'd say a top-40 for this week is on lock! I couldn't have imagined it before the release to be honest. MAYBE a top-40 with the physical release, but opening like this out of the park? No.
Only another 2k and that should be enough for top 40!

I think she’ll need at least another 4k to comfortably make Top 40! 3 days of ‘sales’ left- she may just make it!

Remember to stream Padam Padam once, twice, ten times! Download it twice on iTunes! Also do the same with Loreen's Tattoo. Thank you for listening.

Thank you for putting this discussion back on track!

In short, Taylor Swift debuted 17 years ago - but that first album era was seemingly restricted to the US and Canada. Her international breakthrough came with the release of Love Story and her second album Fearless, in 2009 (14 years ago).

Taylor Swift (Current age: 33 years, 5 months)

Debut single release: 'Tim McGraw' - 16 years and 11 months ago [19th June 2006] (Age at the time: 16 years, 6 months)

Debut album release: 'Taylor Swift' - 16 years and 7 months ago [24th October 2006] (Age at the time: 16 years, 10 months)

Her UK debuts:

First single to chart: 'Love Story' - 14 years and 3 months ago [22nd February 2009] (Age at the time: 19 years, 2 months)

First album to chart: 'Fearless' - 14 years and 2 months ago [15th March 2009] (Age at the time: 19 years, 3 months)

Kylie Minogue (Current age: She will be 55 in five days time)

Debut single release: 'Locomotion' - 35 years and 10 months ago [13th July 1987] (Age at the time: 19 years, 1 month)

Debut album release: 'Kylie' - 34 years and 10 months ago [4th July 1988] (Age at the time: 20 years, 1 month)

Her UK debuts:

First single to chart: 'I Should Be So Lucky' - 35 years and 4 months ago [10th January 1988] (Age at the time: 19 years, 7 months)

First album to chart: 'Kylie' - 34 years and 10 months ago [10th July 1988] (Age at the time: 20 years, 1 month)

It's anyone's guess what the charts and music consumption will be look like in 20+ years from now, and whether Taylor will still be able to score big #1s or Top 10 singles into her 50s - or if the threshold will be "maybe Top 40 is possible", just like it is for Kylie. I think it's excellent and exciting that Kylie is possibly able to get a new Top 40 single, 35 years into her career! Far from pathetic. :o

Hate to take the conversation off-topic again, but it just occurred to me that age-wise, career-wise, and even album numbers-wise Taylor is currently at the same point that Kylie was at when she released Fever (33 years of age, around 15 years since their debut, and around 10 albums in to their career).

Anyways, Padam Padam is almost top 50 on Apple Music now, which is crazy considering Kylie's never even cracked the top 100 before. That + the fact the song was discounted today gives me hope that Padam Padam will debut inside the top 40, and become her highest charting single since Dancing. I don't wanna jinx it, but I kind of see it peaking even higher when the album comes out and the physicals are released along with it, though of course that is super premature at this point.

With Kylies album not out until late September i cant see padam padam peaking then, if the album was out sooner and if the physical single was released it could be different. Kylie is doing much better than usual at the moment and im hoping interest will increase over the next few weeks, it will be very interesting again next week to see how it holds up but there is no doubt Kylie is doing way better than expected, id love to see padam padam get kylie another top 40.

Couldn't agree more :)

Apparently she looks set for Number 1 in Australia, which would be amazing considering it has been quite sometime since she had a hit Single in Oz.

Where'd you get that from? I could see her getting a reasonable placing in the top 40 but sales would have to be quite unprecedented in this decade to go to #1. Maybe a journo got hold of midweek data that heavily skews sales?

^ could she get #1 in AU in singles without being top 200 on Spotify?
Looking at the post about Kylie on PJ

she did 1.4K sales yesterday, which is a lot all things considered

and is on 6.3K for the week already

Looking at the data like that, as Kylie is climbing almost everywhere, and this is missing part of Monday’s streaming figures, Kylie should easily make the top 40 by Friday - that points at 10.5k without considering its momentum, and that’s effectively the most needed for the top 40 in the past month or so.

It would make it her biggest new single since ‘Into The Blue’ reached number 12 in 2014, though ‘Santa Baby’ peaked at 31 in January 2021 in the pandemic Christmas. As a sidenote, I’m sure ‘Santa Baby’ has also reached the top 100 at Apple Music.

So the question for me now, is will ‘Padam Padam’ reach the top 30, out peaking ‘Santa Baby’? And will it sustain the momentum, and actually climb the chart like recent songs by P!nk have? I can’t believe that I just dictated ‘P!nk’ into my phone and it spelled it correctly!

BTW - not an attempt to compare artists, but other than Elton and Whitney, can you think of any other pre-2000 artists who have recently made the top 40 (other than Christmas songs)? P!nk comes close as she debuted in 2000.

Then I guess Michael Ball when he reached number 1 - though that was purely a download/charity hit so barely counts.

^If you do a search, there was a thread on that topic very recently

Britney

Technically, yes. Would she also have to practically double the highest one week sales of the past 4 years to do so? Also yes.

Good to see Kylie love spreading

She looks free this album to do what ever she wants and looks happier with these bops that she can explore

Remixes, physicals etc still to come, Padam Padam may get some nice longevity

True! The Elton John effect.
I really don’t think it was a hit because it was Elton… he helped obviously, but it was definitely down to the hype of it being Britney’s first venture into music as a free woman.

Edit: Like, even though ‘Cold Heart’ was a huge hit (again many would argue it was coz of Dua) I don’t think it would have been anywhere near as much of a hit as it was if it was Elton John feat. Someone else. Whereas it still woulda been a similar sized hit had it been Britney feat. Someone else

Exactly what I was thinking! Elton is the one that has benefitted significantly from collaborating with “trendier” artists (Ed, Dua then Britney), he’s hardly setting the charts alight on his own anymore lol. I mean full credit to him for managing to get hits in his 70s but let’s not pretend Britney’s involvement wasn’t the driving force behind Hold Me Closer’s success worldwide
