I really don’t get the issue with R1 not playlisting it when R2 has been one of its biggest supporters!

I think at this point it's about the principle, and also the fact they're giving bullshit reasons. Although I don't really care as she's winning without their help, but I'd have more respect for them if they could just be honest and upfront about it.

For me it feels a little jarring that every other song in the top ten this week is either on their playlist or has been in the past, so it makes Kylie look like even more of an outlier.

The artist (and her age/'perceived relevance to their audience' - which is a stupid argument when a song is performing so well on streaming) is the issue for them here, not the song - and for me that's the jarring part. Fair enough, don't playlist Say Something or Magic, I agree they don't sound like the stuff Radio 1 targets at. But Padam Padam? If the song was by Anne-Marie and sounded 100% identical, there's no question whatsoever it would be on the playlist.

Anyway, I agree with Aly, at this point it doesn't matter. It's a proven hit, they're giving it spot plays, they have been known from time to time to avoid playlisting 'unfashionable' huge hits, but this one feels particularly bizarre just because in terms of sound it is SO far up their street.

I find it so funny when they say they do it on a "case-by-case" basis when in this case its clearly on "artist-by-artist" basis. I can't possibly think what Kylie could release to be on the playlist, the only way is to feature on a single of one of the artists who are guaranteed to be playlisted atm.

But to be fair to them they have played Padam Padam outside the chart show. Kylie got played 3 times (in the span of 5 hours) on Radio 1 yesterday, Padam Padam twice and Spinning Around once.

Mollie King has played Padam Padam on Party Anthems twice now, so maybe a better strategy is sending her/the station some love and appreciation for playing it and maybe it will get played every week.

To be honest why don't they playlist and just play it on the dance and chart shows, that saves them accusations from the public. Radio 1 and Radio 2 have decided they want a certain age audience and if they think Kylie won't appeal to that age range they won't playlist it, we know radio 1 and 2 will throw any dj out no matter how popular they are if it means achieving their target audience over people listening.

Kylie is just being used as an example that radio 1 bosses believe she might attract older listeners to the station and they want those listeners to be tuning to radio 2.

I don't think Radio 1 have as good a grasp on their target audience as they think they do. Padam Padam has obviously resonated with younger people, who are known to stream in heavier numbers, and has been a cultural phenomenon already, yet Kylie's age stops them playlisting it. You can't tell me people within Radio 1's target age range are gagging to hear Olivia Dean more than they're gagging to hear Kylie's newest one (and I know they want to support new artists, but they can support new AND established artists surely, there's no point in helping new artists break through if they'll then be ignored in favour of more new artists).

Playlisting Padam Padam wouldn't even mean they have to support Kylie for the whole era, or even for the next single. Just as Padam Padam being a chart hit doesn't automatically mean the next will be a success. I don't think it's unreasonable to ask Radio 1 to be open-minded when it comes to surprise chart hits like this one, and ignoring the fact that they've deemed Kylie too old is just making them look more ridiculous. Even three weeks on the C-list would be something...!

However, I'm glad Padam Padam is slaying regardless of Radio 1. I don't think their playlisting has that big an impact on the singles chart anyway for the most part, but like Aly says, it's the principle of them automatically ignoring an artist based on their age.

As for the question of why it matters when Radio 2 is spinning it - what about the song makes it a Radio 2 only song? Is there a reason other than the age of the artist?

I don't think Radio 1 have as good a grasp on their target audience as they think they do.

Further evidenced how by contrast, when she performed at the Capital Summertime Ball you had a stadium full of mostly young people loving the song and celebrating her when she performed it - and the only notable moment of the recent Radio 1 Big Weekend was when the pretentious posh band they try to push threw their toys out of the pram on stage because the audience didn't know who they were.

I think radio 1 is still haunted by having aging dj's and an aging audience in the early 90s. Ever since 1994 they have tried to be "cool with the kids", the awful Jo Wiley and Steve Lamacq eras of the mid 90s/Britpop where anything pop was ridiculed and only Britpop, indie and some rock were to be liked and then they never seemed to have got back on track and they are always trying to be what they think the kids want.

The above can be seen in the current Dave Central Cee and Drake releases, "wow kids listen to these great new rap songs that could be number 1 today!!! and at No.9 its err Kylie Minogue....BUT Dave Central Cee could be number 1!!!.

To their credit, Radio 1 have played Padam Padam every week so far in the actual chart show and Jack Saunders has always been very complimentary of Kylie and the song itself each time...!

Yes but I still maintain Radio 1 bosses don't want an older audience, I am 47 and have listened to radio 1 for the last three weeks on chart show Friday and the last few First Looks, the bosses of radio will be horrified too learn a 47 year old who hasn't listened to the chart show since 2006 when Gnarls Barkley was No.1 is listening to their station, they want me on radio 2, so I stick two fingers up to radio 1 because when Padam Padam starts falling I won't be listening to radio 1 or 2.

It is well documented that radio 1 want people of a certain age to go elsewhere and leave their station to the young people and that is their ultimate goal.

Kylie 9! :o

And if they hadn't rrset Harry for no good reason, Loreen woulda been 10!

I think Harry got a natural reset by increasing with his BRITs performance, it wasn't like a George Ezra situation.

Definitely an automatic reset for As It Was (as well as CUFF IT, Heat Waves and now Seventeen Going Under)

I mean yes this is literally true. Their remit is to appeal to a certain age group (18-34 iirc?) I don't think pointing this out is the zinger you seem to think it is?

(I also don't think there is anything wrong with the BBC having different stations to appeal to different audiences, there's no suggestion that Radio 1 is meant to be inherently 'better' than Radio 2, it's just different)

The difference is in previous times the BBC didn't bother who was listening to which station as long as they were listening, a 60 yr old could listen to Simon Bates or DLT on radio 1 and that was that, now the BBC wants people of a certain age listening to both, technically radio 1 would rather have 5 people only listening to radio 1 everyday under the age of 30 than 9 million over 40s tuning in, there is nothing wrong with aiming for a target audience but to say we don't want these people listening to our station is ridiculous.

They can have that remit but it doesn’t mean people of all ages can’t listen. I’m sure there’s 60 yo who listen to R1 and 18yo who listen to R2.
