And how it did was really not great, although it did qualify and prevent a DNQ streak. It may not have matched Mozey's wooden spoon finish, however 12 voters is a new low for a final, and I matched my lowest semi qualifying score of 41, this time with the unfortunate Terra Avium finishing 21st as a result of points which helped me qualify. Considering it's one of my favourite finds of recent times - according to my last.fm playback, I was the 6th top listener of the 'album' of the remix single last year with 17 scrobbles - it's disappointing that it made so little impact, and I'm at a bit of a loss as to the general drop off over the last 4 contests, other than that the songs I've sent have been pretty obscure (less than 50k Spotify streams for each) and the only one with reasonable pop appeal was a DNQ in a fairly alt-heavy semi. Still, a Q is a Q, so let's see what can be built on it.

Going back to one of my monthly personal chart #1s of 2024 for almost certainly the last time, more evidence if any were needed that Iceland is the coolest nation on the planet.

I think this could be the big moment for Bronzil, I'll be surprised if this isn't top ten - hopefully a lot higher and contending for the win. A banger.

It certainly was a big moment for Bronzil, gaining support from a significant cross-section of voters, 15 of whom gave it points in double figures, and with at least one score for each points denomination, on the way to a best ever finish of 2nd! I hadn't anticipated it having this much crossover appeal, but I'm delighted to have happened upon a bona fide smash to end my top 10 drought, not to mention my more scratchy recent form. A sizeable lead at halfway through the vote reveal was reeled back thereafter by Kluminican Republic, who convincingly went on to achieve a long-awaited first BJSC win, so to support that with a personal best in 2nd place made for a pleasing story - plus the hope of a first AQ in BJSC 173!

Willow Kayne - Zenosyne

 

The numbers were kind to me as an even number of entrants means a first Bronzil AQ Willow Kayne grew up in Wiltshire and won an Ivor Novello Rising Star award in 2021. This is the title track from her most recent EP - the word "zenosyne" refers to the sense that time keeps going faster, something I certainly relate to.

MØ - Keep Møving

Recycling a former BJSC artist for a third contest in a row, although her previous appearances in 2012/13 predated her chart success, MØ is also the first artist I've sent to have had a UK #1 (although INXS had a US #1 and UK #2) - that was all a while ago, this is musically and lyrically the energy I need right now... with an ø in the title

I’ve been enjoying this recently but not as much as ‘Who Said’ from the same era. I hope it does well for ya though!

The wait for a fourth top 10 finish was much shorter than that for the third, and all of them were top 5s with each of 2nd to 5th covered once each! Fantastic to see those points coming in from all directions with 31 voters, and although more than half of those were between 5-9 points inclusive, a healthy 10 votes were in double figures. In truth, this sounded like it would be a safe qualifier (although it turned out to have had no votes of 12 or 10 in the semi final), but with my previous top 10s all hailing from EDM, it feels great to have this success with a pop song that's one of my favourites of the year so far (also my first entry released in 2025) - while there just happened to be another in the contest that took my top points, and won!

OK, it wasn't quite the smash I was hoping for - instead it produced the lowest semi final score of all my 25 contests to date, including the 3 DNQs! A qualifier it was though and it did better than projected in the final, but still missing the top 30 as the year's flip-flopping fortunes continue between each contest. There was no consolation of a unique position this time - the previous entry to finish 32nd (Sølv) also did so with 17 voters, but from a bigger pool of voters in the final (63 then compared to 50 now), so a respectable reach across the available nations this time was offset by, yep, a low average score per voter (8.9 for Sølv compared to 6.8 for Cult Of Venus). Still, there were some surprise votes and high scores. Bronzil participation now comprises one seventh of the contest's history, look forward to making it one sixth in 5 contests' time, and one quarter 20 contests later!
