August 9, 20231 yr 'We Close Our Eyes' has a great buildup and chorus. The first part of the chorus was sampled in the Groovecutters remix that made the UK top 40 in 2005, although I did know the Go West song before that. I guess all the older people at the time bought that Alison Moyet jazz song which is why it was so high in the charts (it really doesn't sound like an 80s #2 record). EDIT: now I read the description and its a Billie Holiday cover, that makes more sense, she was an icon. Edited August 9, 20231 yr by TheSnake
August 10, 20231 yr after how amazing Yazoo were, all. these early Alison Moyet singles are so disappointing.... and this cover is even worst, totally pointless imo
August 10, 20231 yr Author 30TH MARCH Well for those thinking that Frankie Goes To Hollywood would be debuting at No 1 it’s disappointment I’m afraid, but more on them later. Phil Collins and Philip Bailey continue at the No 1 spot for a second week and continue to move northward saleswise (albeit only by 16%) to 98,651 copies last week and should enter the top 10 YTD when we review them next week failing a massive downturn. Collins’ purple patch continues on the album charts with a fifth week at the top for “No Jacket Required” where he’s already held off tough competition from both Tears For Fears and Howard Jones and will seeking to prevent Paul Young this week. lp9VB41KBdU The two Phil’s easily hold off Alison Moyet who maintains her No 2 position and increases her sales to 65,263 but drifts further behind the the boys and will probably fall next week in part thanks to the song that shoots 14-3 this week. Sarah Brightman has already got a top 10 single to her credit back in 1978 with “I Lost My Heart To A Starship Trooper” which made No 6, but she’s done better now in tandem with 12 year old boy soprano Paul Miles-Kingston on “Pie Jesu”. The track is lifted from the new Andrew Lloyd Webber musical “Requiem” which was written about his late father and opened in theatres earlier this year, the accompanying album lifts 11-5 this week whilst the single attracted 54,791 buyers. 31oAcmBz044 So onto the big news of the week, a new Frankie Single. It’s the title track from their debut album “Welcome To The Pleasuredome” which debuted at No 1 back in November and has so far sold just over 900,000 and should cross the million mark at some point this year probably. The single was promoted (much like their last one) as their next No 1 and started brightly in the week in the runner up spot before falling back to eventually enter at No 5 (44,132). All eyes will be on its performance next week to see if the group can become the first group in UK Chart history to get their first four singles to No 1, expect a blitz of promotion this week from the group to achieve it! The song of course comes with an 8 minute video which is typically exotic though it is perhaps less controversial than previous efforts. LBoigB2ZcKI Another of 1984’s favourites is back in the form of Nik Kershaw. His last single “The Riddle” sold over 330,000 copies before it left the charts whilst his second album, of the same title peaked at No 8, now second single cut from it “Wide Boy” sneaks 12-10 (29,036) to become his 4th top 10 single in just over a year. It was originally penned for his debut album but failed to make the cut, seems Kershaw had second thoughts. CW5e-Xu3aQw Paul Young clings to the No 4 spot though his sales cool to 51,663 and he’ll be concentrating on his album out now, and further down the top 10 Jermaine Jackson improves 7-6 (38,471) despite a lower sale week on week and Go West float 9-8 (37,043). Going the wrong way are Madonna 3-7 (37,247) but she can console herself as her album “Like A Virgin” reaches a new high moving 10-8, and Stephen “Tin Tin” Duffy grinds 5-9 (36,941). 1- EASY LOVER- Phil Bailey & Phil Collins (98,651) 2- THAT OLE DEVIL CALLED LOVE- Alison Moyet (65,263) 3- PIE JESU- Paul “Miles” Kingston & Sarah Brightman (54,791) 4- EVERYTIME YOU GO AWAY- Paul Young (51,663) 5- WELCOME TO THE PLEASUREDOME- Frankie Goes To Hollywood (44,132) 6- DO WHAT YOU DO- Jermaine Jackson (38,471) 7- MATERIAL GIRL- Madonna (37,247) 8- WE CLOSE OUR EYES- Go West (37,043) 9- KISS ME- Stephen “Tin Tin” Duffy (36,941) 10- WIDE BOY- Nik Kershaw (29,036)
August 11, 20231 yr Catching up a bit, 'Love & Pride' is such a classic and annoying it was held off by that <_< Interesting (but galling) to see 'Material Girl' narrowly missed out on #2 twice. Love 'Kiss Me' and 'We Close Our Eyes'
August 11, 20231 yr Author 6TH APRIL The nation continues to hold its breath for a record breaking chart feat from Frankie Goes To Hollywood but for now at least that will have to wait. Phil Collins and Philip Bailey put up the necessary resistance and romped home to an easy victory though their sales are on the slide to 77.979 to bring the tracks total to 341,479 in five weeks as it spends a third week at the top as it moves to eighth place on the YTD lists, here’s how they all stand at the end of the first quarter: 1- I KNOW HIM SO WELL- Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson 733,822 2- LOVE AND PRIDE- King 529,754 3- I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS- Foreigner 514,981 4- SOLID- Ashford & Simpson 440,572 5- YOU SPIN ME ROUND (LIKE A RECORD)- Dead Or Alive 422,042 6- LITTLE RED CORVETTE/ 1999- Prince 361,556 7- DANCING IN THE DARK- Bruce Springsteen 348,432 8- EASY LOVER- Phil Collins & Philip Bailey 341,479 9- NIGHTSHIFT- The Commodores 275,468 10- SHOUT- Tears For Fears 268,719 JkRKT6T0QLg Frankie Goes To Hollywood power 5-2 (65,926) to nab the runner spot from Sarah Brightman and Paul Miles Kingston who were running ahead of the frankie’s all week and ended up behind them on 64,175 at the close of play. You’ll of course recall that Gerry & The Pacemakers are currently the only act in chart history to hit the top slot with their first three releases, their fourth “I’m The One” peaked at No 2, and so it looks at present that the Frankie’s will only be able to match this feat- we’ll see what next week brings. Tears For Fears are having a great 1985 so far, their last single “Shout” sold 410,788 copies and their second album “Songs From The Big Chair” spent a fortnight at No 2 last month unable to dislodge Phil Collins. The second single from it “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” debuted at No 16 last week (their best debut yet) and now soars to No 5 (41,922) and becomes their fifth top 5 single though they are still looking for that elusive No 1. 3lUQv_RQ5F0 Another couple of climbers, Go West prove their strength moving 8-6 (41,055) and Nik Kershaw notches 10-9 (26,622) which is better than the remaining tracks can do. Alison Moyet slips 2-4 (54.791), Paul Young tumbles 4-7 (38,233) though he does enter at No 1 on the album charts, Jermaine Jackson moves 6-8 (31,637) and Stephen “Tin Tin” Duffy drops 9-10 (25,637) 1- EASY LOVER- Phil Bailey & Phil Collins (77,979) 2- WELCOME TO THE PLEASUREDOME- Frankie Goes To Hollywood (65,926) 3- PIE JESU- Paul “Miles” Kingston & Sarah Brightman (64,175) 4- THAT OLE DEVIL CALLED LOVE- Alison Moyet (54,791) 5- EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD- Tears For Fears (41,922) 6- WE CLOSE OUR EYES- Go West (41,055) 7- EVERYTIME YOU GO AWAY- Paul Young (38,233) 8- DO WHAT YOU DO- Jermaine Jackson (31,637) 9- WIDE BOY- Nik Kershaw (26,622) 10- KISS ME- Stephen “Tin Tin” Duffy (25,024)
August 11, 20231 yr Everybody Wants To Rule The World is possibly my favourite 80s song  Maybe you could break the tie in the no.2 poll then if you haven't already voted.
August 11, 20231 yr ‘We Close Our Eyes’, ‘Welcome To The Pleasuredome’ and especially ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’ are fab  the latter has well and truly proven itself as an evergreen force.
August 12, 20231 yr TFF were one of the best band of the 80s, they got 2 great ones in a row with Shout and this one, I do prefer Shout and think it could have been a #1 if not released during Xmas...
August 12, 20231 yr Hmmm not sure about that. It charted at the beginning of this thread and never sold enough to seriously challenge for #1 in a week. Sales in the 50,000s was as high as it got according to gezza
August 12, 20231 yr I mean it spent a lot of weeks charting in Dec basically losing sales same as Madonna-Like a virgin
August 12, 20231 yr Love the TFF album as a whole and absolute classic. Not surprised FGTH didn’t get a fourth no1 this sounds more of an album track and just like that their imperial era was done!
August 12, 20231 yr I do like WTTPD as it works well on the album but I agree it wasn’t really single material. It did well to get that high imo
August 12, 20231 yr Author 13TH APRIL Given a level field it’s entirely possible that Frankie Goes To Hollywood would be celebrating their fourth chart topper today, their track “Welcome To The Pleasuredome” was neck and neck with “Easy Lover” for the first part of the week but TOTP once again proved the catalyst. It gave air time to the Phil Collins & Philip Bailey track whilst not playing FGTH as so it is that “Easy Lover” got the boost it needed though it won with just 60,724 to FGTH's 58,633, that's a new low for the No 1 sales this year. With the Frankie’s now on a European tour and unavailable for the show you have to suspect the moment has gone especially given what’s going on with the highest new entry this week. 2351s26CvR4 Blazing a trail into the charts at No 7 this week is the US version of Band Aid called USA for Africa. The concept for the group was the idea of Ken Kragen and Harry Belefonte who enlisted the help of Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie to pen “We Are The World” and they’ve managed to get some A List celebs to help out including Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, Stevie Wonder and Diana Ross. The track is already No 1 stateside after just three weeks and debuts here at No 7 on a sale of 34,578, a rather more modest start than “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”. It was of course played by an estimated 5,000 radio stations at 4.00pm BST last Friday which assisted no doubt in its promotion. _cDNhqNv2HY Already in its eighth week on the charts Phyllis Nelson’s “Move Closer” is making climbing in the charts look a hard task. She’s better known for her disco output in the early 80s but she’s switched to balladry for her new track which flopped here when released back in April 84, but after BBC Radio London started to play the track it has lifted off finally and this week completes its climb to the top 10 14-8 (31,790). oFNszV-7VJI Returning with his second album, former Linx member David Grant has teamed up with Jaki Graham to give us a cover of the 1972 Detroit Spinners track “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love”. It’s the first release from his new album “Hopes and Dreams” out next month but it gives a nice profile boost to newcomer Graham who hails from Birmingham. It inches 12-10 (26,656) this week. zAvd338_LhM Tears For Fears barely get any sales boost but manage to move 5-3 (54,961) thanks to other records losing speed above it including Sarah Brightman & Paul “Miles” Kingston 3-4 (54,944) and Alison Moyet 4-6 (34,918), Paul Young completes the fallers as he tumbles 7-9 (27,727). Go West continue to surprise chart observers by climbing again 6-5 (38,199) but they lost sales to do so and must be fancied to fall back in 7 days time. 1- EASY LOVER- Phil Bailey & Phil Collins (60,724) 2- WELCOME TO THE PLEASUREDOME- Frankie Goes To Hollywood (58,633) 3- EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD- Tears For Fears (54,961) 4- PIE JESU- Paul “Miles” Kingston & Sarah Brightman (54,944) 5- WE CLOSE OUR EYES- Go West (38,199) 6- THAT OLE DEVIL CALLED LOVE- Alison Moyet (34,918) 7- WE ARE THE WORLD- USA For Africa (34,578) 8- MOVE CLOSER- Phyllis Nelson (31,790) 9- EVERYTIME YOU GO AWAY- Paul Young (27,727) 10- COULD IT BE I’M FALLING IN LOVE- David Grant & Jaki Graham (26,656)
August 12, 20231 yr I had no idea that Frankie Goes To Hollywood were that close to scoring a fourth #1 :o
