October 26Oct 26 I’m surprised the new Ali G film got to number 3 considering it was a 2 day screening only with evening showings

We only have to go back just over a year ago to see our previous TV-spin off at #1 (‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale’, £4,390,303, #1). There was a time when British comedy series always seemed to get big-screen adventures (see more about this with the film at #3) but I think you have to go back to ‘The Lego Ninjago Movie’ (£3,642,038, #1, 2017) for the last non-Downton TV spin-off at #1 (depending on if you want to accept the Mission: Impossible franchise) and to ‘The Inbetweeners 2’ (£12,538,114, #1, 2014) for a British adaptation. For anyone unaware, ‘Ghosts’ was a British sitcom that ran from 2019-2023 written and starring the comedy-troupe Them There (‘Horrible Histories’, ‘Yonderland’) and has since been successfully adapted for an American version. The third entry in James Gunn’s rebooted DC universe, ‘Clayface’ becomes the second-consecutive film to debut at #2 (£2,011,765, £1.9 million without previews) following ‘Supergirl’ (£2,725,612, #2) in June. Despite the lower opening, this is actually a great result for DC. Seeming that this can be described as “in the vein of Sony’s disastrous SPUMC universe” where they’ve made a film about a Batman villain with no Batman and its an 18-rated horror film, this is a great first weekend with the film already making $46 million worldwide against a $40 million budget. Written by Netflix’s go-to King adapter, Mike Flanagan and directed by James Watkins who has previous with big horror hits (‘The Woman In Black’, ‘Speak No Evil’), this has earned good reviews and looks set to be a Halloween choice for many next week. This is the 6th biggest horror opening of the year and the second-certificate for a 18-rated film. One of the early-trailblazers of the mockumentary format, Sacha Baron Cohen has seen his comedy-creations return big box-office in the past and it turns out, there’s still an audience awaiting his return as ‘Ali G: Who Iz I?’ debuts at #3 (£1,344,873) despite a stunted release by Amazon who kept reducing and reducing its showtimes as the release date got closer. It was meant to be just this weekend but a second weekend has now been announced. It’s still a much lower opening than ‘Ali G Indahouse’ (£3,231,673, #1, 2002) nearly a quarter-of-a-century ago but it has beaten ‘Digger’ to be the second-biggest debut for a 15-certificate comedy of 2026. Cohen’s last film of the sort ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’ was a success, receiving Oscar noms, but skipped cinemas for an Amazon Prime release. Completing a brand-new top #4 is ‘Wildwood’ (£1,022,599, £983k without previews). This is the latest film from Laika studios and has a massive $100 million budget. Despite being a 12A, this has received their widest ever release. It’s not a great start but the reviews for this film have been outstanding so there’s a chance it can find its audience. Laika’s only real box office hit, remains their first release ‘Coraline’ (£2,427,244, #2, 2009) which made £8.7 million on original re-release and even opened better than this film on re-release in 2024 (£1,260,124, #4) where it added another £3 million+. The final new entry this week is ‘Fatherland’ (£311,086, £198k without previews, #9). This is the strongest debut for Polish director Paweł Pawlikowski, beating the Oscar-nominated ‘Cold War’ (£228,780, #15, 2018), a film I did see but ashamedly remember nothing about. Last week’s chart-topper, ‘Street Fighter’ falls to #5 after a 56% drop but does just about stay above £1 million. Five films above £1 million is nothing to be sniffed at during this time of the year. With £4.3 million, it’s already well above where ‘Mortal Kombat II’ ended up closing (£3.4 million). After a disappointing opening, ‘Forgotten Island’ showed positive signs in weekend two (-28%). But with an opening that low, this looks like too little too late. ‘Verity’ loses 42% as it becomes the 21st member of the £10 million club of 2026 while ‘Other Mommy’ drops another 54% as it climbs towards £5 million. Climbing back into the top 10 after a week’s absence is ‘Shaun The Sheep: The Beast Of Mossy Bottom’ with its 16% climb helping it hit £4.7 million and break a record. It is now the highest-grossing Sky Original of all-time, surpassing ‘Lee’ (£4.5 million) from 2024. There are two further new entries in the #11-#15 section: ‘Tad And The Magic Lamp’ (#12) and ‘BTS World Tour ‘ARIRANG’ In Buenos Aires: Live Viewing’ (#13). Next week sees the openings of ‘Wicker’, ‘Primetime’, ‘Animol’, ‘I Love Boosters’, ‘Arnie & Barney’, ‘Everest: The Other Side’, ‘Ozzy & Black Sabbath: Back To The Beginning’, ‘BTS World Tour ‘ARIRANG’ In Sao Paulo: Live Viewing’, ‘Peter Asher: Everywhere Man’, ‘In The Shadows’, ‘Nightborn’, ‘City Of Masks’, and ‘Bad Day At The Office’. We also see re-releases of ‘Donnie Darko’, ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ and ‘Ken Russell’s The Devils’. Can any of them top the charts?~Laika Opening Weekends: Coraline (£2,427,244, #2, 2009)ParaNorman (£1,393,123, #2, 2012)The Boxtrolls (£2,000,259, #1, 2014)Kubo And The Two Strings (£844,027, #5, 2016)Missing Link (£644,649, #7, 2019)Wildwood (£1,022,599, #4, 2026)
October 26Oct 26 I know the reviews have been rather bad but for 'Klara & the Sun' to not even land within the top 15 is a DREADFUL result Excited for the releases of 'Wicker' and 'Primetime' this weekend!
October 27Oct 27 A shame that Wildwood couldn't have done better, I guess it's marketed a bit darkly for a kids film, I just saw it today and the animation is absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous and if there's any film to see just to support the hard work and craft of these animators, it's that one.Interested to see how Primetime does, Robert Pattinson could well be on course for a third smash in a row in one year.
October 27Oct 27 Oh, pleased to see Ghosts made #1! I really adored that TV series, and I'm watching the US one now as well which is also really good (took me while to adjust to it from the British one).I've not been keeping up with this thread apologies @LewisGT, it really is one of the best threads on the site, thank you for all your amazing hard work. ❤️ Have had a read back through and seeing that 99 million for Spiderman, in UK numbers alone!?!? I'm guessing it has gone over 100 million now, utterly astonishing! 🫨 Guessing the new Avengers film is going to smash big time too based on the re-release getting over 4 million itself. Marvel really smashed it out of the park franchise wise.

Only the third film to ever do this in the UK.

Tuesday at 22:295 days The half term advantage helped Ghosts to beat Clayface Edited Thursday at 09:534 days by Hadji
Tuesday at 23:055 days I feel like I am being gaslit into believing that 'Clayface' was any good! LMAO! I really did not like it and I'm so sad that I guess I'm in the minority in thinking this aha.'Ghosts' & 'Wildwood' though, both excellent! The former is just pure joy.

(08) Other Mommy - £258,515 (-40%) Weeks: 4 (£5,382,468)Falling out:Ali G: Who Iz I? (1 week)Fatherland (1 week)Happy Halloween guys! On the spooky weekend, we did see a scarily close battle for #1 between two new entries with ‘Wicker’ (£1,757,184, less than £100k previews) eventually coming out on top by £10k and making it back-to-back British productions at #1. A potentially awkward film to promote, this is a romantic com-dram about a woman falls in love with a man made of wicker, they’ve done a great job at marketing to the niche and Olivia Colman has proved herself to be a very bankable British star. In fact, this opening is remarkably consistent with the £1,721,921 that ‘Empire Of Light’ (#3) opened to in 2023 and is above ‘Wicked Little Letters’ (£1,642,777, #2, 2024) which has a good hit and ended up just short of £10 million. This will be targeting a similar run and hoping to land towards the £10.3 million that ‘The Roses’ closed with last year. Also starring is Alexander Skarsgård, who is on a run of British films after ‘Lee’ and ‘Pillion’ and Richard E. Grant fresh off his brief spell on The Traitors. Pushing ‘Wicker’ close was ‘Primetime’ (£1,747,043, £1.3 million without previews, #2) but would have landed a place lower without its previews. This is still a very impressive opening for A24 who are starting to distribute more of their own films in the UK, having previously agreed deals for other companies to have the international rights. In fact, only ‘Backrooms’ (£4,281,936, #1) from earlier in the year has opened better for them. The film sees Robert Pattinson star as Chris Hansen, the host of ‘To Catch a Predator’, a controversial TV-segment where he confronted potential child predators in sting operations. That show never made it over to our shores so a lot of the success is on the star who is having a crazy year with ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘The Drama’ already in the bank and ‘Dune: Part Three’ still to come. On directing duties is Lance Oppenheim who also directs the new #1 film in America (the documentary ‘You Can See Everything’) which will be coming out here soon. Last week’s brand-new top three, all make way for the new entries, falling three places with very similar holds. ‘Ghosts: The Possession Of Button House’ is down 38% but is already at £6.3 million which is not bad at all for a fully-British produced film. It’s already outgrossed ‘Supergirl’! Speaking of DC, ‘Clayface’ (-39) was the top horror film of Halloween weekend as it added another £1.2 million. ‘Wildwood’ completed the top 5 after a 37% drop. The strong word-of-mouth is starting to kick in but it still looks like it might be too dark to appeal to kids but the stop-motion is putting off adults. More successful at being a spooky option for kids, ‘Shaun The Sheep: The Beast Of Mossy Bottom’ has the best hold of the week (-8%) as it climbs two places in its 7th week. The second horror in the top 10 is ‘Other Mommy’ which lost 40% as it fell to #10 in week 4. It has £5.4 million and I think it will fall away completely now Halloween is over. ‘Forgotten Island’ is sticking in our memories with another good hold (-34%) but the same can’t be said for ‘Street Fighter’ (-53%) that has it’s second consecutive 50%+ drop as it falls behind the kids film, despite beating it to #1 on opening weekend. ‘Verity’ is the longest-consecutive-running film in the top 10 with a 59% drop in its fifth week. There are two further new entries in the #11-#15 section: ‘BTS World Tour ‘ARIRANG’ In Sao Paulo: Live Viewing’ (#13) and ‘I Love Boosters’ (#15). We also see a re-entry for ‘Ken Russell’s The Devils’ at #11 having the best per-screen average of any film this week. Next week sees the openings of ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’, ‘Wild Horse Nine’, ‘I Play Rocky’, ‘Ramayana: Rise Of A Legend’, ‘Onwards & Sideways’ ‘George Michael: The Faith Tour’, ‘Merry Christmas Aubrey Flint’, ‘La Bola Negra’, ‘Misty Green’, ‘Manipulation’ ‘Think Of England’, ‘Stray Kids World Tour ‘RUN IT’ Live Viewing’ and ‘Amazing Grace’. We also see re-releases of ‘V For Vendetta’ and ‘Rocky’. Can any of them top the charts?
