Ed is just changing his mode of operating to match the charts these days. The days of big album sales in both opening week and total sales are done, not just for Ed but everybody. What big named artists can do now though is release a lot of albums that are virtually a dead cert to be number 1.

Adele in 5 years time will have 5 number 1 albums and dwindling sales, Ed will probably have 12 and the mass of albums just keeping his overall sales chugging along.

Kylie is clocking up number 1 albums now easier than her heyday but the sales will obviously never match those older albums but no reason she can keep churning out albums and keep those number 1s coming.

If that’s his goal then it doesn’t seem to working considering the dire streaming performance

Autumn variations to be named Flop of the century

How many preorders did he get? 10k

With the same strategy Taylor did 100k preorders and ended up on 200k with Midnights

What? If the goal is releasing albums that you want to and scoring easy number ones and still chugging along impressive (for todays standards) album sales he is doing just fine.

two number one albums, his collective 7 albums selling/streaming loads of copies during the year. Ed keeps winning.

That moment when the flop of the century is still a comfortable #1 :cheeseblock:

Tbf wasn't Bionic the flop of the century and that was a comfortable ish #1

But I get your point - the second week will be the determining factor.

If an over 50% drop in album sales (and god knows the streaming %) in 4 months counts as “winning”, then go Ed I guess :kink:
The BTS army have risen to the #1 challenge and are having a buying and streaming party for “3D” tonight.
Ed should’ve released a few songs first as it would’ve helped him to have bigger sales

That's clearly not what he's after with this album though.

Some other sales -

Albums

#6 Kylie - 2,834

#7 Gunship - 2,534

#8 Lana Del Tay - 2,382

#9 The Weeknd - 2,159

#10 Beverly Knight - 2,034

#33 Mae Muller - 1,180

Singles

#47 Kylie / Tension - 2,446

#80 Kylie / Padam Padam - 1,841

That's clearly not what he's after with this album though.

He might change his mind with his next album if he gets low sales with this one

Let's not forget that Bionic was a #1, too.

What would it be a shocker when Ed would have lost against Kylie if they both would have released the same week.
Anyone know where Kylie's 'Disco' fell to in its second week? And what did it sell?

Disco dropped from 1 - 5 on its second week and its sales dropped from 54,905 to 15,183.

Indeed as many would have though Ed would be ahead, i think if they went head to head though it would have created a chart battle that both would be have benefited from sales wise.

Thanks, looks like a similar drop in position this time but a much bigger sales drop

Wow, that’s a huge sales drop for Kylie, I was expecting the album to have held up much better than this. She’s a legacy artist, so strong first week saies, high peak (helped by endless formats/loyal fans), and then saies freefall.

There’s been such a media blitz/buzz, so this is a surprise.

I'm going to be a bit controversial here and say that this far into Ed's career, at a time when his style of music is not too popular, he is doing just fine! I think the purpose of this album is just to get another no1 to his Name (he loves the charts). He will try for a big pop album one more time I think.

With regard to NSYNC, did anyone expect it to be doing a bit better even with the film not out yet? Praying the film elevates the song.

I thought because it takes barely anything to achieve that these days, and she might have enough people right now who'd want multiple formats.

It's also very difficult to predict whether someone's going to sell 4,000 and in with a shot of making the top 10, and 1,500 and miss the top 75.
