Posted November 10, 20231 yr If you have a song that missed the #1 position that you wish or think had deserved to have gotten there, what would it be? Mine is Physical by Dua Lipa. So heating Houdini, it's obviously gonna be a huge smash for her. It took me down the rabbit hole and I ended up listening to her singles catalogue and on came Physical. Without a doubt this song underperformed in the charts, at least relative to the success it should have had. Whilst being successful it never really reached the heights it should have done. It's her best song so far, those ayntha and gritty bass lines, the, punchy chorus, the superb pre middle 8 chorus and that video oh my. It has it all. I have no doubt she'll release something soon that will give it a run for its money. What's yours? And why do you think it should have been #1?
December 13, 20231 yr Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson. It's mad that it never got to number 1, but it's probably because of how big his album sales were!
December 14, 20231 yr Overall there's millions... But taking this question to mean songs that got close to #1 but didn't quite make it, my winner would be Tender by Blur which is a masterpiece but narrowly missed out to Baby One More Time on its second week at the top if I remember correctly.
December 14, 20231 yr Vienna by Ultravox is the ultimate example of a song of the moment being beaten by a song for the age!
December 14, 20231 yr 'Physical' would easily be one of mine too, but I would also extend it to any of the singles from Future Nostalgia, the whole era deserved better chart success than it got!

This is also a great shout, 'Tender' is a masterpiece, easily the best thing Blur have ever done
December 14, 20231 yr I think my favourite pop song that obviously had the appeal to get there but didn’t is still Whenever Wherever - opened with 6 figures and was in the Top 10 of the year but out the same week as Evergreen. Presumably they underestimated its popularity given they mis-timed the release so badly.
December 14, 20231 yr Madonna - Crazy for You, released twice, in the 80s first and then in 91, both times hitting #2 also Madonna-Live to Tell, the best song of the 80s <3 also Kate Nash . Foundations, so close to #1, but there are too many to mention Edited December 14, 20231 yr by Bjork
December 14, 20231 yr also Madonna-Live to Tell, the best song of the 80s <3 Madonna - Live To Tell, for me..... but the list in endless. Yep, scrap everything else, 'Live To Tell' is the ultimate should-have-been-number-one  was lucky enough to see her perform it live at the O2 last week, was SUCH an incredible moment!! December 14, 20231 yr Many of my all-time favourites stalled at No.2: N-Trance - Set You Free DJ Jurgen presents Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone The Corrs - Runaway Take That - Rule The World So let's go with those four to start.

Agree with this too, a masterstroke of bad timing :( It would have very easily beat Westlife if released a week earlier.
December 14, 20231 yr As it was mentioned in her rate the other day, I remember feeling gutted that Janet Jackson's 'All For You' missed #1 when I believed it had a realistic chance of getting there! (It was #3 but still only about 6,000 away) :(
December 14, 20231 yr A few what come to mind for me! Dido - White Flag (genuinely amongst my all-time favourites) Lady Gaga - The Edge of Glory (not quite a #2 but a stunning song but the release schedule of all Born This Way singles affected their peak). This could’ve easily went top 3 if held back but it was still huge. Ariana Grande - no tears left to cry - (typical for this to be held off by One Kiss!) Adele- Rolling In The Deep I’d also mention The Weeknd - Save Your Tears and Girls Alouds - Call The Shots. Edited December 14, 20231 yr by Jord
December 14, 20231 yr Some of Sash!'s #2s probably, especially 'Mysterious Times' ft. Tina Cousins and 'Stay' ft. La Trec. Edited December 14, 20231 yr by TheSnake
