BuzzJack's favourite top 100 hits for 2023 week 40 are Noah Kahan - Stick Season and PinkPantheress - Mosquito.

BuzzJack's favourite top 100 hit for 2023 week 41 and auto-qualifying for the October monthly round is JENNIE - You & Me.

Using the debut chart position as a tiebreaker, 'Stick Season' will also auto-qualify for the October monthly round.

It's a low scoring bunch all around, with the top vote winners in the first poll only getting 12 votes and in the second poll a measly 10 votes, which I think are the two lowest marks to date (not helped by the lower overall number of votes but both leaders fell short of 50% of available votes). Nonetheless, coming out jointly on top of week 40 is American folk pop rising star Noah Kahan with what has belatedly become his biggest hit, the title track from his 2022 third album 'Stick Season', after spending a year quietly racking up impressive streaming numbers while bubbling under, and British bedroom pop star PinkPantheress with the lead single from her debut studio album 'Heaven knows'. They finish 2 votes ahead of Jung Kook and Jack Harlow who have the only other track from that poll to crack double digit votes. In week 41 the leader is the only song to get to double digits, and it's another one from the K-Pop industry, JENNIE from BLACKPINK with her latest solo offering which originated as part of the last BLACKPINK tour. JENNIE is the second South Korean act to win one of these polls and the first that may be described as K-Pop (following Peggy Gou). Her closest competition, one vote behind, was Joel Corry's take on the recent trance revival trend.

I'd normally spend this paragraph detailing songs which fell short of 5 votes but in this case that's most of the other songs, so more interesting to look at which songs did get there. In week 40, Jorja Smith and J Hus got 8 votes in 4th place, while Ed Sheeran did just about scrape the mark with one of his 3 newies, perhaps unsurprisingly the one that did go top 40 and has been receiving airplay despite still being unclear if it's technically officially a single or not. Ed does also share last place for the week alongside a newly viral old demo from Dominic Fike both on 2 votes. In week 41 Drake likewise only managed to reach the 5 vote threshold with 1 of his 3 debuts, though in this case getting to 6 votes, surprisingly to me doing so with the Yeat collab which if anything I'd have expected BuzzJack to hate the most. That shares 3rd place in the poll with blink-182's third hit of the year, while Noah Kahan crops up again to round out the top 5 of this week just about making the 5 vote mark too partly with a bit of help from Kacey Musgraves. At the tail end of the poll, James Arthur's blink and you'll miss it shoutfest comes last and is finally the second song of the year to register a grand total of zero votes, joining Clavish's 'No Difference'.

Sticking to schedule this week more or less :cheer: there are a few more interesting songs for BuzzJack this week so hopefully this won't be as painful to get through as the last pair of polls. Rounding out the rest of October, there are 12 songs in the first poll and 10 in the second, although the playlist has 15 tracks for the first week - I've included both the original and the Gunna remix for the Victor Thompson track (apologies for the slightly butchered tagging in the poll to account x) as it seems to be the release of the latter that pushed it into the chart but the original still seems to be more popular overall - hard to tell as I don't think any version ever appeared in any streaming charts, I still feel like its #43 debut feels suspicious - and as with Aphex Twin earlier in the year I've included all 4 songs from the boygenius EP as it charted mainly off sales of the whole EP but if you want to rank just based on the song 'Black Hole' then go ahead x With the additional tracks included the playlist totals 48 minutes 19 seconds for week 42 and 31 minutes 43 seconds for week 43.

Vote for as many or as few songs as you want and would be ideal if you can make sure you've heard all the songs before voting if possible!

Will leave this open for a week again so aiming to drop the next poll on Monday night. I think I will make that a 3 in 1 poll as the next 2 charts after these both have fewer than 10 new entries each, and I do want to catch up ASAP x

The next poll will also include the results for the September monthly round - which is remaining open for another week - and I'll get the October monthly round up around the same time too.

Just Skepta in poll one and Beabadobee & Laufey and Marshmello/Pink & Sting in poll 2!

Week 42

Fred again.. and Jozzy - Ten (#16) - this is smooth like silk  and that production switch up in the middle is glorious

Troye Sivan - One Of Your Girls (#17) - this took a few listens to click but it's a delicious slice of pop

Drake - Rich Baby Daddy (feat. Sexyy Red and SZA) (#21) - the most instant of his new album, very very catchy

Skepta - Can't Play Myself (A Tribute To Amy) (#28) - struggle to see how anyone could get any enjoyment out of listening to whatever this is supposed to be

Bring Me The Horizon - DArkSide (#31) - not one of their better drops

Victor Thompson and Gunna and/or Ehis 'D' Greatest - THIS YEAR (Blessings) (original / Remix) (#43) - this is quite a nice slice of afrobeat

Olivia Rodrigo - the grudge (#45) - her usual slushy drivel

Offset - SAY MY GRACE (feat. Travis Scott) (#49) - this one pack a punch!

Offset and Don Toliver - WORTH IT (#52) - whereas this one is more of a light jab

boygenius - Black Hole / the rest [EP] (#56) - soul-crushingly boring the lot of it

Davido - FEEL (#96) - this is neat little package

Voted Fred, Troye, Drizzy, Victor, Offset & Davido.

The Kid LAROI, Jung Kook and Central Cee - TOO MUCH (#10) - whatever they were trying to do with this one, it really doesn't work

Charli XCX and Sam Smith - In The City (#41) - wow what a flop this was considering the names involved! shame as this is surprisingly quite good

blink-182 - ANTHEM PART 3 (#48) - well i hope they paid travis extra for this impressive effort, the song is a bit too tryhard though

Chris Brown - Sensational (feat. Davido and Lojay) (#63) - Breezy served with this!

beabadoobee and Laufey - A Night To Remember (#84) - why did beebop need to clone herself?

Jess Glynne - Friend Of Mine (#87) - this is more like it Jess! Just do what Becky Hill is doing

A1 X J1 and Aitch - Scary (#88) - Buzzjack's favourite gruesome twosome are back! surprised this didn't rise into the top 40, it would be welcome imo

iñigo quintero - Si No Estás (#90) - we do love a random non-English entry appearing, shame the track isn't much cop

Jax Jones, D.O.D and Ina Wroldsen - Won't Forget You (#95) - all aboard the trance bandwagon, first class ticket for you mr jones?

Marshmello, P!nk and Sting - Dreaming (#99) - there was just no need for this to be created was there

Voting for my top 4. 'the grudge' isn't a highlight from 'guts' but it's still one of the best albums of the year so it's great to see another charting song. 'IT GIRL' is cheap but it bangs!

'WORTH IT' and 'SAY MY GRACE' make it sound like the Offset album might actually be different. 'WORTH IT' is definitely the better of the two, it's sounding good now he's ditched the trademark Migos flow. 'SAY MY GRACE' is better than anything I've heard from Travis's recent album. 'FEEL' has a good beat and he sounds good so I'm going go give it a vote even if it's not something I've gone back to since.

'Black Hole' is sounds nice but it's very nothingy. Sexyy Red gets old quickly on 'Rich Babby Daddy' but at least it has some life to it compared to some of Drake's other recent work.

'One Of Your Girls' is the best of the 3 Troye hits this year but the effect on his voice stops me from properly getting into it.

The rest are all just meh. Nothing too awful this week. 'Can't Play Myself' is pointless, 'Ten' is a bit of a mess and 'This Year' might be good if it was by artists who could actually sing. 'DArkSide' isnt as scream-y as their other recent songs.

Week 43

1. Charli XCX and Sam Smith - In The City

2. A1 X J1 and Aitch - Scary

3. beabadoobee and Laufey - A Night To Remember

4. The Kid LAROI, Jung Kook and Central Cee - TOO MUCH

5. Marshmello, P!nk and Sting - Dreaming

6. iñigo quintero - Si No Estás

7. Jess Glynne - Friend Of Mine

8. Chris Brown - Sensational (feat. Davido and Lojay)

9. Jax Jones, D.O.D and Ina Wroldsen - Won't Forget You

10. blink-182 - ANTHEM PART 3

Just voting for Charli/Sam for this week. It's both Chari's poorest effort for a while and Sam's best ever for me

A1 x J1 are sounding much better now they’re a few years older. 'Scary' is not a banger but a lowkey bop. I was expecting 'A Night To Remember' to be better but it's nice enough.

I'm not getting the overwhelming negative reaction to 'TOO MUCH'. I quite like the hook and was expecting much worse. 'Dreaming' is quite pleasant. MOR-dance.

'si no estas' is fine but sounds like so many other songs. 'Friend Of Mine' is far from Jess's worst but the charts really didn't need her back.

'Sensational' doesn't work for me. 'Won’t Forget You' is better than Jax's other hits of the past few years but still rubbish.

I enjoyed the 90 seconds where 'ANTHEM PART 3' was an instrumental!

Voted for the only songs which are in double figures as it stands. Only really like the chorus of the Troye Sivan song but it's enough for a vote. The interesting bits of the Charli / Sam song outweigh the rest, and the Jax song is my fave of the lot, however formulaic it might be.

Troye Sivan - One Of Your Girls

The Kid LAROI, Jung Kook and Central Cee - TOO MUCH

Drake - Rich Baby Daddy (feat. Sexyy Red and SZA)

Olivia Rodrigo - the grudge

boygenius - Black Hole / the rest

~

Didn’t vote for any of the 3 currently in double figures oops.

Fred again

Drake

BMTH

Boygenius

Laroi (really surprised how much it’s grown on me :o )

Bumping back to page 1 again, 2 days left to vote in this! (does already have more votes than the last one of these though, hooray x)

I was planning to do a 3 in 1 poll next week but given the most recent chart has a whopping 1 new entry so it's barely adding to the backlog I think I am now just going to do another 2 in 1. The barrenness of December release schedules is not too compatible with the concept of this poll series oops!

week 42

01. Troye Sivan - One Of Your Girls (#17)

02. Fred again.. and Jozzy - ten (#16)

03. boygenius - Black Hole / the rest [EP] (#56)

04. Skepta - Can't Play Myself (A Tribute To Amy) (#28)

05. Olivia Rodrigo - the grudge (#45)

06. Aliyah's Interlude - IT GIRL (#92) - didn't realise I knew this but definitely recognise it as a TikTok audio... I think soundtracking a Jordan Sangha edit as Big Brother is all over my FYP

07. Drake - Rich Baby Daddy (feat. Sexyy Red and SZA) (#21)

08. Offset - SAY MY GRACE (feat. Travis Scott) (#49)

09. Offset and Don Toliver - WORTH IT (#52)

10. Bring Me The Horizon - DArkSide (#31)

11. Davido - FEEL (#96)

12. Victor Thompson and Gunna and/or Ehis 'D' Greatest - THIS YEAR (Blessings) (original / Remix) (#43)

A marked improvement on last week *.* voted for Troye and Fred Again.. here

02. Charli XCX and Sam Smith - In The City (#41)

10 'the grudge' 6/10

11 'One Of Your Girls' 4.5/10

12 'WORTH IT' 4/10

Voted for the top 6. The production on 'ten' is just silky smooth, I love that Fred again.. gets such consistent charting songs as I feel like only he could get a song that sounds like this into the chart (although I'd love if it became a more trendy sound in general x), reminds me a bit of my BJSC entry by Godford. I guess I can take or leave Jozzy's contribution to it as I'd like it just as much as an instrumental but I won't mark that against it. That's an easy fave for the week but a handful of other good tracks - 'Tears Dry On Their Own' is my 2nd favourite Amy Winehouse song and I think Skepta did a pretty tasteful remix here, nothing mindblowing and I'd never put it on over the original but it'd have fit fine as just being an official remix of the original track. 'Rich Baby Daddy' is another one of the handful of songs worth keeping from the Drake album, a solid trash bop, although held back from being one of his very best songs because he's outshone by his features here again (yes even the much maligned Sexyy Red hook, it's a bop idc), in particular the outro really isn't needed as it starts to stray into the boring territory of much of the rest of his album and with a Florence interpolation no one asked for amongst it, lose the outro and that'd bump the song up to a 9/10. Then we have Bring Me The Horizon doing a pretty good Linkin Park impression (with a bit of Papa Roach in there too), the much better of the two Offset songs (some surprisingly heartfelt lyrics here, good instrumental, solid hook, solid Travis feature, I think this will grow on me more) and 'IT GIRL' is a bit of an oddity but it's kind of iconic, slight Azealia Banks vibes. Davido delivering another feel good track here but I don't think it's quite sticky enough to be vote worthy. I can see why all those boygenius songs were left off their album, all of them are pretty good but none really have a moment that hits hard enough to make them essential, I think I'd narrowly say 'Voyager' is the best of the 4 (surprisingly for me as that's the most Phoebe heavy of the songs!) but I'm not rushing to go back to any of them. The Victor Thompson thing is pleasant enough bar the occasional dodgy vocal from this Ehis fellow, I give a higher mark to the remix not because I think Gunna adds anything to it (find it very weird that he's involved in this track at all but he kind of just blends in and makes no difference to it) but just think the remastered production hits a decent bit better. 'the grudge' was one of the weaker tracks on Olivia's album for me, it's pleasant and fine but it really just comes across as an inferior version of 'drivers license' for me. I reeeeally wanted to like 'One Of Your Girls' and I think it has the occasional glimpse of a good idea or two in it (the pre-chorus spoken word part is kind of cool and it has some nice synth parts) but I just do not like the vocal processing on the chorus at all and much of the verses just sound like a pretty mediocre Harry Styles song, honestly if anything I've liked it less each time I've heard it :( but saved from being my least fave of this bunch as the other Offset song is a bit of a snooze.

Week 43

1 'Si No Estás' 8.5/10

2 'ANTHEM PART 3' 8.5/10

3 'TOO MUCH' 7.5/10

5 'Won't Forget You' 7/10

6 'In The City' 6.5/10

7 'Scary' 6/10

8 'Dreaming' 5/10

9 'Friend Of Mine' 4/10

10 'Sensational' 3/10

Voted for the top 4. I was very intrigued about the iñigo quintero song and had no idea whether I'd like it or not - thankfully I very much do, it's a lovely little ballad, reminds me a little of some of Måneskin's slower songs (albeit in Spanish rather than Italian obviously). Also surprisingly impressed by 'ANTHEM PART 3' which is easily the best of blink-182's recent hits for me, great drumming on this one and the vocals are sounding better this time. 'TOO MUCH' washed over me a bit on first listen but I'm lying if I don't say it's wormed its way into my head, I've heard it on the radio a couple of times and it makes for good background listening, even if it's a little by numbers. The bit where LAROI comes back in after Cench's verse is the best part for me. beabadoobee and Laufey is an inspired pairing and they came through with an expectedly classy tune, nothing earth shattering but as with Laufey's previous hit the vibe is strong enough to just about be vote worthy. Jax Jones' attempt at 'Miracle' is better than Joel Corry's, although ironically given the title I have already forgotten how it goes which isn't a great sign. 'In The City' is a little generic but decent enough, it does have some cool production. 'Scary' is surprisingly competent from A1 X J1, it's a little hard to take them seriously with these kind of lyrics but it's melodically pretty good and a decent Aitch feature. I thought I was going to hate 'Dreaming' based on the first minute or so but when the beat kicks in properly it becomes ok, Sting's vocals are really past their prime though (and P!nk feels like a complete non-presence on here). I see Jess Glynne decided to just become Becky Hill except with even more basic lyrics. And unsurprisingly Chris Brown has the biggest stinker across this pair of polls, not his worst but it has his usual mixture of boring with occasional cringe moments, it's saved a bit by an ok Davido feature although Lojay's part is not great.
