January 8, 20241 yr I think my issue with streaming in many cases the listener doesn't always select the songs but the streams count but with paid purchases its someone actually investing in the song but it just feels paid sales have less weight even though artists/,labels make more from it but I'm slowly learning to accept it. Pure sales are extremely heavily weighted already (a sale is worth anywhere from 100 to 1,200 times more than a stream, and I would bet that the vast majority of purchased songs don't ever get played close to 100 times by the person who bought it). The numbers are just so low that they get drowned out by streams anyway. Genuinely can't believe we are still getting 'streaming shouldn't count to the charts at all' takes but as always the sales chart still exists for those who want to seek it out and you'll quickly see why it would have no credibility as an official chart.
January 8, 20241 yr OWuhM25e8sc While we're on the topic of Sophie, where the hell did this video come from? We had a forum for her on here and I don't remember it being brought up once? Why was there an alternative video

Why was there an alternative video  She filmed this one originally, but said she didn't like the finished product and that the director apparently got the brief of what she was going for entirely wrong - so filmed another of her messing around in Torremolinos which became the official video. Shame, I actually really love that video
January 8, 20241 yr So there's the proof if anyone still needs it that they got rid of the rule requiring catalogue songs to be top 50 before debuting! Wasn't expecting it to have done enough to go top 100 this week anyway though so that's a good surprise *.*
January 9, 20241 yr So there's the proof if anyone still needs it that they got rid of the rule requiring catalogue songs to be top 50 before debuting! Wasn't expecting it to have done enough to go top 100 this week anyway though so that's a good surprise *.* Murder never charted on the US Hot 100 before, so it is not considered a recurrent/catalogue song and is eligible to enter at any position. The recurrent rules are still in effect, as we saw with the December charts, where a Christmas song had to reach #50 before re-entering (or the more strict #25 for a song that has already charted over 52 weeks).

Catalogue songs were considered recurrents regardless of whether they'd charted before or not up until a couple of years ago. People the other day were saying this was still the case (i.e. that Sophie would need to be top 50 to debut). Although as I said it's decided on a case by case basis now, which does mean that in practice they still apply the top 50 rule for Christmas (and Halloween) songs.

I didn’t know that, thanks for the information. Glad Billboard changed the rule — can’t wait to see if Murder keeps rising in the US like in the UK.

I was one of the ones saying that (now I just have to try and remember it's been changed so I don't bring it up again in the future haha). It was such a dumb rule, I remember Truth Hurts by Lizzo not being able to chart early on because it was more than 3 years old when it became a hit lol. Really glad they've changed it.
January 11, 20241 yr I echo the surprise at 'Murder on the Dancefloor' being a 'millionaire' already - I had noticed it finding a new found relevance over the past couple of years but it's hard to determine whether that's just my personal bubble or the wider public, guess I have my answer now! It's one of my favourite songs ever, it holds strong childhood memories and still sounds so strong today. I've been listening to a lot of Sophie's music these past few days and, other than the more folk-inspired songs which aren't really my thing, I don't think she's had a bad single! Hard to narrow it down to just a few favourites but I've been loving her DJ collaborations and 'Me and My Imagination' has been a favourite for a while - not too dissimilar Dua Lipa's 'Future Nostalgia' album. -x- This was Sophie's Top 20 biggest songs in March 2019: 1 GROOVEJET (IF THIS AINT LOVE) SPILLER 1 2000 642k 2 MURDER ON THE DANCEFLOOR SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR 2 2001 492k 3 TAKE ME HOME SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR 2 2001 252k 4 HEARTBREAK (MAKE ME A DANCER) FREEMASONS/SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR 13 2009 5 GET OVER YOU/MOVE THIS MOUNTAIN SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR 3 2002 6 CATCH YOU SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR 8 2007 7 YOUNG BLOOD SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR 34 2014 8 MUSIC GETS THE BEST OF ME SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR 14 2002 9 MIXED UP WORLD SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR 7 2003 10 I WON'T CHANGE YOU SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR 9 2004 11 GROOVEJET (IF THIS AINT LOVE) SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR 2001 12 ME AND MY IMAGINATION SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR 23 2007 13 NOT GIVING UP ON LOVE ARMIN VAN BUUREN VS ELLIS-BEXTOR NA 2010 14 BITTERSWEET SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR 25 2010 15 I KNOW ENOUGH (I DON'T GET ENOUGH) THEAUDIENCE 25 1998 16 A PESSIMIST IS NEVER DISAPPOINTED THEAUDIENCE 27 1998 17 IF I CANT DANCE SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR NA 2007 18 YES SIR I CAN BOOGIE SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR NA 2004 19 IF YOU CAN'T DO IT WHEN YOU'RE YOUNG THEAUDIENCE 48 1998 20 TODAY THE SUN'S ON US SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR 64 2007 That second 'Groovejet' is the live mix that features on the end of 'Read My Lips'. You can see 'Not Giving Up On Love' features on the above list, I'm guessing it would still be outside the Top 10 if included on the current list. January 11, 20241 yr If I were Sophie, I'd get a viral-ready dance smash out around March/April. It's worth a shot at least! 'Hypnotized' could have fit that bill quite nicely thinking about it!

She tried to make that a viral dance smash! I saw a tiktok of her teaching the dance, and a few people recreating it! It's a fun song, shame it never caught on
January 11, 20241 yr If only she pronounced the title correctly :teresa: That was my biggest bugbear with that song, but I forgave easily due to it being such a brilliant song. It really deserved to smash!
January 11, 20241 yr Hoping for Murder On The Dancefloor to get back in the Australian singles chart later today.
January 12, 20241 yr I do love the pronunciation on Hypnotized! I love that song, I wish she had continued with that sound for the full album. From the songs that don’t appear on this list, I do really like Fu ck With You that she did with Bob Sinclair (the hook reminds me of ‘Rock With U’ by Janet Jackson and it’s a bit of a novelty hearing Sophie swear!).
January 12, 20241 yr Murder On The Dancefloor re-entered the Australian singles chart at #25 this week. It’s first appearance since 2002.
