  • Yeah I think the book first of all is based on a straight relationship, but also focuses on the way the Japanese view the afterlife

Oh this film just made me cry and cry.

I did a second watch the other week and was intrigued to see if it would still have the same impact. Elements didn't hit me as much (the ones that were shocks in the first viewing), but still a beautiful all round film

Getting a Criterion Collection release!

"Criterion Collection is an American home-video distribution company that focuses on licensing, restoring and distributing "important classic and contemporary films"."

They don't just release anything on there and it's usually to help preserve the movies iirc!

I watched this back in March and it made me cry my eyes out towards the end  It was just very heavy and a lot of it hit home - similar struggles about acceptance during my youth, losing a parent last year. It was maybe a bit too much for me at that point (I didn't realise what I was letting myself in for with this film, honestly). That's not to say I didn't enjoy the film, I really did. I'd like to watch it again, but not too imminently. Nice that it's getting a physical release!

It's out on DVD and Blu-Ray today, but not sure about the Criterion special release!

Is the Criterion release just Blu-Ray?

I will buy this at some point, but as it is on Disney plus I only want something with extra's. I almost re-watched at the weekend (would have been my 3rd viewing)

I believe so. I think very limited of them get 4K releases but it’s definitely Blu-Ray.

Think I’m re-ready to watch this.

It might be because my Facebook feed keeps reminding me it exists, but I also like the way it still makes me think

I also need to read the book it’s based on

I've watched this several times since buying the DVD and must watch it again.

I did look to buying the book but a read of the online preview suggests it is very different from the movie.

Yeah Andrew Haigh loved the book and adapted it :)
