Posted January 9, 20241 yr We have had the best, now let’s have the worst! :P What was your worst year for music and why?
January 9, 20241 yr 2005 for me. Certainly was the weakest year for dance music and a lot of the music hasn't aged well.
January 9, 20241 yr Hmm I think I'll say 2005 as well. Was very close between that 2003 & 2004. Although the latter couple of months of 05 was when I got back into following music properly again via the music channels but looking over the year it wasn't that great really. The NOW albums did make up for it though. 03 & 04 were times I dropped out of the charts etc so it probably isn't a good reason to judge them necessarily but both had weak years for #1's and looking down the list of the EOY best sellers for 04 especially a lot of crap and forgettable stuff.
January 9, 20241 yr Author I’ve gone for 2002, which I think was sandwiched between two very strong years.
January 9, 20241 yr Living through it, I used to think it was 2003 (Delta's debut album and singles aside of course) but I was just adjusting to an actually very dynamic year for music, which quickly changed the face of the 00s after 2000 to the first half of 2002 felt like an extension of the 90s in many ways. Late 2002 was transformative - I always think of the albums in that period from P!nk, Christina and Justin contributing to that, and then in 2003 pop music really evolved and R&B came to the fore as dance faded a bit, especially Eurodance. At the time I didn't like a lot of new music in 2003, yet these days I can see how many enduring classics that year generated. I now believe that 2008 was the weak link of the 00s and is the individual year playlist I easily listen to the least. The charts were tediously slow and the Amy Winehouse effect of record labels trying to recreate her sound through new pop stars meant a lot of stuff sounded like watered down Motown pastiches. That said, pure pop seemed to be making a comeback after a few years in the wilderness so it wasn't all bad, and there were some high points - Sara Bareilles, Alphabeat, Girls Aloud, Rihanna, Katy and The Saturdays debuting etc...but a lot of stuff that year felt limp and generic.
January 9, 20241 yr 2003 did have both TATU and Evanescence getting to #1 which were both totally unique moments for me at the time considering those type of songs normally are never the type you'd expect at #1 in the UK. Reminds me of Limp Bizkit getting a #1 in 2000 and MCR in 2006. So 2003 defo has it's good points imo!
January 10, 20241 yr This is a tough one, I’m inclined to say 2005, but then it finished off string for me with albums from Rogue Traders and The Veronica’s. Though I guess two albums late in the year aren’t enough to save it for me.
January 10, 20241 yr 2005 with the Elvis reissues getting to no1 on painful sales! I hated those reissues and 2005 gets my vote for it.
January 11, 20241 yr I voted for 2004 as the worst year but I don't think it was terrible. There were a lot of artists I liked such as Franz Ferdinand, Keane, Kelis and Black Eyed Peas. However, there was some pure s***e from the likes of Eamon, Busted and 3 of a Kind. Not a vintage year. I still prefer it to the 2010s though. Edited April 11Apr 11 by montyj
January 11, 20241 yr Was difficult, I like every year but voted for 2007 - I am not much a fan of the electro dance music of that year, the other music was good though especially the Klaxons. Edited January 11, 20241 yr by TheSnake
January 13, 20241 yr Easily 2009 for me - an overabundance of autotuned urban-dance-pop and RedOne productions which have aged like milk, lol. It doesn't help that 2009 wasn't a very good year in my personal life either, meaning the songs are often made worse by the memories I associate with them. Edited January 13, 20241 yr by Catherine91
January 23, 20241 yr Went for 2005, all them Elvis reissues alone were enough to make me shudder! Picked up towards the back end of the year tho.
February 5, 20241 yr Toss up between 2000 and 2005. 2000 didn't give us Rihanna so voted for that.
