Thank you for all the suggestions for your chart flops of 2003, now we look at the next year, 2004. What songs do you remember from this time and why do you remember them fondly? These could be songs that failed to make the UK Top 40 Singles Chart, or even the Top 75, but they have to have been released as a single at some point during the year.

I will nominate something in a little while that I personally enjoyed in this year, but for now, it’s over to you. ^_^

A big fan of the first one and then a great track from Nightwish who didn't have that many top 100 hits overall but are a pretty well known band in the metal scene of course!

One I've been listening to a little bit recently is Somersault by Zero 7 and Sia. It reached #56 as the second single from their second album When It Falls.

Yes, Somersault is a beauty! Another gem from Zero 7 and Sia.

My favourite song of the year was a top 75 hit that missed the top 40 (No.72), from the eternally underrated Sarah McLachlan. The Afterglow album reminds me so much of fond college memories. I love the video concept too.

The Eurovision winner did better chartwise this year, slightly (No.47). The first winner from Ukraine, and the first time I ever won money on a bet - as I was so sure this would win, and it did, great track.

This was a great dance track released on AATW and on one of the Clubland albums, got to No.67.

A very near miss for a pop song, peaking at No.76. It was a bigger hit in Ireland a couple of years earlier in a different remix. Nice track, especially the bridge/chorus.

Not sure if this Belinda Carlisle cover ever did get a release in the end, but it was certainly scheduled to in 2004 and is quite well known thanks to having heavy Clubland rotation. Was also a big hit in Australia.

Courtney Love - Mono (UK # 41, my SOTY of 2004)

Hot Pantz - Give You One For Christmas (UK # 64)

Here are some flops I liked from the first quarter of 2004;

Amy Winehouse – Take The Box [Peaked at #57 in January 2004]

Before she was famous she had a couple of minor flops in 2003 and 2004, this one was the higher charting at the time.

School Of Rock – School Of Rock [Peaked at #51 in February 2004]

An old fave from a Jack Black movie, recently submitted to a song contest on BuzzJack, this was from the soundtrack to School Of Rock.

Pendulum – Another Planet / Voyager [Peaked at #46 in February 2004]

Our first introduction to Pendulum in the charts, this double A side was close to breaking into the Top 40 but stalled just outside. Many more chart hits and flops would follow.

Armin Van Buuren feat. Justine Suissa – Burned With Desire [Peaked at #45 in March 2004]

A beautiful trance piece from one of the greatest trance artists of all time, this would go on to become a person of avourite in remixed form.

One that many will recognise as it was used as the background to X Factor auditions etc. Also another Sia track too. This being when she wasn't having much luck in the charts!

Oh I love Here Without You. Only #77 is wild.

Moving onto the second quarter of 2004, not too much to shout about, but here’s a couple I decided to highlight;

Gomez – Silence [Peaked at #41 in May 2004]

The band had their most successful single in 1999, featuring on Now 43. This was their penultimate chart appearance.

Linkin Park – Breaking The Habit [Peaked at #39 in June 2004]

Follow-up to the hit Numb, this single failed to make the same sort of splash in the charts but instead left a minor ripple before dropping out after two weeks.

Eric Morillo feat. Audio Bullys – Break Down The Doors [Peaked at #44 in June 2004]

Audio Bullys had already had a couple of Top 40 singles, this one was sadly not that, however a year later they would have their biggest hit to date.

Not much to highlight from the third quarter of 2004, but I’ll mention these two;

Nelly Furtado – Força [Peaked at #40 in July 2004]

The single served as the official song of the 2004 European Football Championship held in Portugal.

Deepest Blue – Shooting Star [Peaked at #57 in September 2004]

After Top 40 hits with Deepest Blue, Give It Away and Is It A Sin, the British electronic group decided to call it quits after this song failed to do well commercially.

In the case of this one it missed the top 100 and Wikipedia has it down as a 106 peak. It's a great song and Amy does a splendid job!

Swedish band The Knife, who have never had a T75 hit (closest they came was in July 2006 with “We Share Our Mother’s Health” (#85)) with “Heartbeats”, sadly only making #119 in October 2004. The track would later be covered by José González who made it a Top 10 hit in early 2006 after featuring in a Sony Bravia advert.

#46 in July 2004 - my sister's first dance, which I played as I DJ'd at her wedding.

Richard Ayoade's fave song = banger. #45 in April 2004.

The lead singer in this band sounds so much like Morrissey, I thought it was a Smiths comeback single.. #49 in November 2004.

Finally. My personal fave, a song I sent to Unknown Pleasures many years ago- Johnny Boy “You Are The Generation That Bought More Shoes & You Get What You Deserve” (#50, August 2004) - which is the 3rd longest song title ever to chart AFAIK.

And here’s my final selection of flops from 2004, from the final quarter, October to December;

Bellefire – Spin The Wheel [Peaked at #67 in October 2004]

Irish girl group who had a couple of Top 20 hits in 2001 and 2002 released this final single before their split in 2004.

The Rasmus – First Day Of My Life [Peaked at #50 in November 2004]

After the success of In The Shadows and Guilty, The Rasmus failed to reach the same levels with this single.

N-Trance – I’m In Heaven [Peaked at #46 in December 2004]

The last ever charting single by N-Trance, just missing out on the Top 40.

Surprisingly, I found myself entirely oblivious to the fact that the iconic track from 'School of Rock' had been unveiled as an official single release, a revelation that caught me completely unawares.
