The top 3 here are all great records, but “No-One Knows” wins for its timeless brilliance.

9

Queens Of The Stone Age

No One Knows

Their highest peak: this is wonderful from the urgent stomping accompaniment to the dark lyrics and wailing vocals

8

Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Machine

1st hit for this US band: I love the gritty, assertive style and the accompaniment is like a relentless whirring machine

8

Missy Elliott

Work It

I love the backwards parts in the chorus and the assertive, old school feel to this: the whole track oozes style and flair

7

Moby

In This World

Another of his hits built on a very well chosen religious chant style hook: "Lord Don't Leave Me" by The Davis Sisters

7

Xzibit

Multiply

Xzibit only has 3 hits and this one was small, but it's a really well produced and catchy  hip hop track with Nate Dogg

6

Dannii Minogue

Put The Needle On It

Her 1st solo hit in ages: while I don't think it develops as much as it could I admire her for this hard edged dance track

6

Shania Twain

I'm Gonna Getcha Good

The lead single from "Up!": hard to follow such an enormous era and I think this is a very nice effort with cute lyrics

5

Phil Collins

Can't Stop Loving You

A cover of a song by William Nichols giving him his last solo Top 40: the style suits him and he performs it very well

4

Britney Spears

I Love Rock 'N' Roll

Well it is the 5th single of the campaign so maybe a lazy cover is forgivable: she does do a decent performance of it

4

BBMak

Out Of My Heart

Their last hit and a huge underperformance from a lead single: I actually think this is quite nice though unremarkable

3

Sophie Ellis-Bextor

Music Gets The Best Of Me

I know it's a 4th single but this is where she went off the boil and never quite came back for me: just quite lightweight

3

Darren Hayes

I Miss You

His 3rd hit and he's gone back down the soppy ballad route: he does deliver this sincerely but it isn't really my thing

2

H And Claire

All Out Of Love/Beauty And The Beast

Like with Steps their last hit includes a twee showtune cover, while the 1st side seems to be a poor "One For Sorrow"

2

Westlife

Unbreakable

939th #1 and their 11th from their 1st greatest hits album: very much the standard formula with nothing distinctive

Week 42 & 43

'The Ketchup Song' is infectious, like the S Club, Foo's, Coral and Richard Ashcroft tracks. The Vines song is a decent but it's not the best of discovery as the Lemon Jelly one was an great experience of a listen. Some cool components going on.

'Nu Flow' is a certified Rnb bop. Still sick of hearing 'Dilemma' Not as massive on that Samantha Mumba one but shame she dropped off the face of the earth after that suddenly. Manics, Faith's and Badly Drawn Boy's are just ok for me.

9/10 for H and Claire - "Beauty And The Beast". It's the second best track on their album.

Week 45:

It is hard not to get caught up in the euphoric spirit of DJ Sammy and Do's cover of Heaven by the final chorus. Very good.

Wasn't a fan of the song at the time though as I wasn't into hard dance back then.

The Soda Club Berlin cover is rather cheap and cheesy sounding.

Jan Wayne's cover of Because The Night is more credible hard dance in the vein of Scooter with some interesting production but the singing's not great on it!

Edited by TheSnake

No One Knows is QOTSA's best hit record, I gave it a 7/10, though they had a 2017 track that was even better, The Way You Used To Do - or maybe I was getting nostalgic! Yeah Yeah Yeahs DNC for me, but will have some from 2003 onwards, but they got better in later decades I thought, grabbing an actual number one for me in 2022 - Wolf! Missy Elliot ditto DNC.

Moby usually gets approval from me, and In This World is a comfortable 7/10, and I just found out I've been spelling Xzibit wrong for 23 years - the other two charted for me, but this one another DNC. I wasnt a fan of Put The Needle On it, a mere 3/10, but Shania's was a goodie, 8/10. I never liked Cant Stop Loving You that much when Leo Sayer had a hit with it in 1978, and Phil's cover I'd forgotten about until I got the question wrong on Popmaster last week - not in person, at home I mean. It's OK though, 5/10.

Britney's cover of I Love Rock n Roll is perfunctory, my memory says 4/10, but the reality is 3/10 when I checked, a single week at 75. I will stick with the fab Joan Jett version. BBMak grab a slightly marginally better one week at 72, so 3/10 too. As an ongoing fan of Sophie E-B Music Gets The Best Of Me is record of the week and a 9/10 rating chart-wise, but 8/10 is prob more realistic minus bias. H & Claire, as not a Steps fan particularly, it was hit or miss depending on the track - and All Out Of Love was a 4/10.

Soppy Darren Hayes was usually worth missing, and indeed I missed I Miss You. Which leaves Westlife - had I got to the stage where they would DNC out of annoyance at a rubbish cover or bland ballad, or were they having a surprise rare top 10 hit for me? Neither! It's an OK 5/10.

  • Author

It’s time for my 3rd and final 10/10 of the year. Not everything Coldplay have done in the last 25 years has been brilliant, and lately it’s mostly been quite bland. But this was when their sound, Chris’s voice and the storytelling came together to make something incredibly moving. The reverse car crash video is exceptional too.

We also have a couple of the best pop songs of the period here in “Dirrty” and “Stronger”.

10

Coldplay

The Scientist

A beautiful lyrically heartbreaking song delivered with one of Chris Martin's finest most vulnerable vocal performances

9

Christina Aguilera Featuring Redman

Dirrty

940th #1: she steps right out of the pop girl bubble and does something very exciting and gritty, enhanced by Redman

8

Sugababes

Stronger/Angels With Dirty Faces

"Stronger" is a wonderfully powerful and introspective track with great production; the other side is more ordinary

7

Santana Featuring Michelle Branch

The Game Of Love

An excellent track whose vocals were tried by several others before passing to Michelle: last Top 20 for both artists

7

Shakira

Objection (Tango)

Originally in Spanish, the tango style of this seems really authentic and it's another delightful quirky track from her

6

Kylie Minogue

Come Into My World

Another "Can't Get You…" style track: not as good as that but has a hypnotic quality and is very strong for a 4th single

6

Rammstein

Feuer Frei

The title means "fire freely" and it's a slightly demonic track: doesn't quite grab me like "Ich Will" but also powerful

5

Tenacious D

Wonderboy

1st hit for this US band about a made up superhero: I love some of it but the story needs too much spoken explanation

4

De Nuit

All That Mattered (Love You Down)

Only hit for this DJ with "Do You Really Like It" style production sampling '80s song "Love You Down": it's not bad

3

Ashanti

Happy

I quite like the flute riff that accompanies this: beyond that it's quite a dull RnB track that fades into the background

2

Shy FX And T Power Featuring Di And Skibadee

Don't Wanna Know

This samples J Lo's "Let's Get Loud" and lacks a strong hook: very little about it that "Shake Ur Body" doesn't do better

2

Blazin' Squad

Love On The Line

This samples Another Level's "Freak Me", and like their chart topper is fairly raucously performed and lacking originality

'Stronger' easily my favourite from those last two bunches, really great track!

'The Scientist' is good if melancholy though.

Edited by TheSnake

'No One Knows' and 'The Scientist' are my favourites from the last couple of batches, so I approve of those top scores D

May has been a washout for me with being away with work, only just getting round to catching up, sorry.

Week 36:

The only one I bought out of this lot was The Tide Is High by Atomic Kitten, it's a little surprising how big this was, especially the first week sale, but then it was a much better cover than most pop covers around this time, with the new section, and it's their biggest song on Spotify with 231m streams so it's still hugely popular now, who knew!

I liked Dy-Na-Mi-Tee too though, definitely my favourite from Ms Dynamite.

Not really a great week other than that, the first (of many) Nickelback songs I didn't like, quite a boring plod from Enrique, and average singles for me from Tweet, 3SL and Ash.

Week 37:

I don't expect it's any surprise that N-Trance's Forever is my favourite of this bunch, it was great to see them get a new original top ten hit that was actually good, because other than the majestic Set You Free I can do without the tacky disco covers. Kelly Llorenna sounds great on it and it has a soaring chorus and great synth.

The Theme came close though, and was the other song I bought this week, brilliant dance instrumental and the first of a few great singles from Jurgen Vries.

I don't mind that Paul Weller song that was your top choice Julian, certainly one of his better singles from this century!

I never madly got into Appleton's career away from All Saints, I think the song I listen to most is actually the breezy third single that flopped. Fantasy and Don't Worry are perfectly nice, but give me Mel and Shaznay's solo stuff any day.

Not much more of note for me here. Two Months Off is a good track, Diving is ok but not great trance, and Tweenies were running on fumes a bit.

Week 38:

The only single I bought this week was Walk On Water by Milk Inc, which I love just as much as In My Eyes, and the next single, Land of the Living, they were a really great addition to 2002 dance for me, three of my favourite singles of the year.

I did like the Liberty X cover though, it gave a nice lick of 2002 gloss to the Mantronix original and brought it to a new audience I guess and it was nice to see them consolidate Just A Little and show it wasn't a one-off hit.

Nessaja is brilliant and has only got better over time for me - the chorus is a sped up sample of an old schlager song by Peter Maffay, the original is a rousing ballad. Hearing it sped up with Scooter's ridiculous lyrics is charming 'It's not a bird, it's not a plane, it must be Dave who's on the train'. Again, it was great to see Scooter consolidate their previous single with another strong hit.

I always forget that Gimme The Light originally charted this early for Sean Paul, I'm not sure I recall it from 2002 but do remember the re-release of course.

Wow, that Duck Toy song is an unlocked memory, incredibly irritating track - too annoying for me to enjoy unfortunately. It sounds like Sweep made a dance record.

Ronan was trotting out the same song over and over again by this point, although I thought the one-take style video was quite well done.

When I Lost You was one of the better Pop Idol related releases, it could have been on Kylie's Fever and it's nice for her that she got a top ten out of it.

Edited by gooddelta

The GREAT news for your next batch is that Rhinestone Cowboy has just been added to Spotify. Just in time to enjoy it.

The Scientist seems to be universally loved these days, by everyone but me. Not that it's bad, it's just a bit depressing for me, music that brings me down I prefer to avoid. 7/10. Dirrty is a great clubbing pop tune, sweaty and attitude-packed 9/10, Sugababes Stronger was the A side for me, and also a 9/10 but just behind Dirrty. The Game Of Love, I loved: Big "million-seller" on a par with Smooth for me 10/10. For Santana to be banging out stuff as good as anything he'd done in 30-odd years was lovely to see.

Shakira's doesn't ring a bell, a quick check brings out a 7/10, so I obviously liked it! Kylie's was also fab. loved it and a chart-topper for me, so that's another million-selling 10/10. She was on a roll! Wonderboy was a quirky oddity that appealed to me, a 9/10 but with the proviso that I haven't heard it since bar maybe once or twice a while back. Better than Jack's Lava Chicken at any rate, but children may (and do) beg to differ....

Ashanti got a happy enough 7/10, and so did a shy FX, both generally likeable. Meanwhile Blazin' Squad and any others on the list impressed me not based on one or more listens at the time. DNC. I make that 25%, so not too bad. 🙂

Sugababes Stronger reminds me a bit of the BBC News theme tune because of the spaced out beeps in the production, the equally great song Chase and Status ft. Delilah - Time also reminds me of it with the beeps after the chorus in that.

Maybe if they’d had a better name they’d have done better: it would make finding their output easier certainly. This is a second very fine single from The Music: I even went and checked out the album which I very rarely do in conjunction with these reviews and it sounded great.

8

The Music

Getaway

I love how this starts like an electronic track and explodes into a wonderfully catchy rock anthem with raw vocal energy

8

Royksopp

Poor Leno {2002}

Another excellent track based around a beautifully sung repeated melody: the video with a captive creature is cute too

7

Suede

Obsessions

Their second hit in quick succession: as usual it's very enjoyable with strong storytelling and I love the harmonica part

6

Jennifer Lopez

Jenny From The Block

Clearly she isn't what the title claims, but it's probably her signature song and it is well written with strong production

6

Will Young

Don't Let Me Down/You And I

His 1st original material: I find "Don't let Me Down" slightly dreary but "You And I" is a lovely song and well performed

5

Paul Weller

Leafy Mysteries

This isn't striking like "It's Written In The Stars" and quite easy to forget, but it's another charming and wistful track

5

Lasgo

Pray

This is a guilty pleasure as it's another strong tune, but the recycling of ideas is extreme and the success diminishing

4

Snoop Dogg

From Tha Chuuuch To Da Palace

Another early uncredited Pharrell appearance: this has quite a good beat but overall I don't think it's a Snoop highlight

4

S Club

Alive

Their 1st hit as a sextet in a similar style to "Don't Stop Movin'", and it's fine but you can tell the sparkle has gone here

3

Kelly Llorenna

Heart Of Gold

This was originally a happy hardcore track by Force & Styles and she's now recorded her own rather tame version of it

3

Mariah Carey

Through The Rain

It's a big slushy ballad that's never going to do a lot for me, though it's a really good and restrained vocal performance

2

Sum 41

Still Waiting

An Iraq war protest lead single: I find the main tune quite unpleasantly repetitive and there isn't much else to the song

2

Rikki And Daz Featuring Glen Campbell

Rhinestone Cowboy (Giddy Up Giddy Up)

Only hit for this duo including Daz Sampson of future Eurovision fame: it's just an odd more upbeat version of the song

1

Sound Bluntz

Billie Jean

Only hit for this Canadian DJ duo: I find the distorted vocals a little unsettling and otherwise I'm not getting anything

'Heart of Gold' is a bit too cheesy and cliched for me!

'Pray' is good by Lasgo I prefer it to 'Alone'.

The Jennifer Lopez track is iconic and catchy but nowhere near as good imo as her early songs. Interesting to think with the whole US R&B/European dance music divide at this time (and little crossover) in the charts that in just under 10 years the musical divide would become mixed and she would be still be in the charts making dance songs like Dance Tonight with Pitbull with similar synths to the likes of Kelly Llorenna or Lasgo!

Edited by TheSnake

Week 44

'Zephyr Song' is my top fave here. Another great track from the RHCP. 'One Love' is fun and 'Electrical Storm' is alright. Wasn't keen on 'Like I Love You' at the time but in reflection is a good introduction for Justin.

I bought that Calling track as well as WYWG but listening to it again now I'm not sure I'm mad on it oops. 'Hanging Around', 'Shiny Disco Balls' and 'The Earthshaker' are all good discoveries too especially the latter which I love how it builds and the middle switchup bit is especially fab.

Week 45

'Heaven' forever a classic dance cover but I like the original a lot too. Whitney's sounds quite good too, wouldn't surprise me if this was a J Lo reject as the melody in the production reminds me of 'Love Don't Cost A Thing' a fair bit.

'Because The Night' cover is pretty solid too but I get why it might come across naff. Agree on a lot of crap in here though and Tom Jones capping it off as the worst so definitely on the same page there. Utter tripe.

Week 46

'I'm Gonna Getcha Good' is a bop, liked it lots then and bought it and still enjoy it very much now. 'Put The Needle On It' and 'Work It' are decent too but both have better. Another carefree and fun single from Sophie. Shame to see it with a low score.

Liking the guitar stuff on the QOTSA but not massively into the song overall. Darren Hayes is a miss for me as well. Even when playing the album of his in the car it's pretty drab. 'In This World' is really good. 'Out Of My Heart' is pleasant but 'Back Here' is still the best I know of theirs. 'Machine' is sounding alright.

Week 47

'Stronger' is one of Sugababes best ballads, not as crazy on 'Angels With Dirty Faces' but it's ok. 'The Scientist', 'Objection (Tango)' and 'Wonderboy' are among my main other faves here.

'Dirrty' a classic but not a Christina fave for me and 'Come Into My World' is solid but not essential Kylie either. 'The Game of Love' is nothing amazing but still good enough and Rammstein's is perfectly serviceable industrial metal.

Not heard The Music track in 23 years but I liked it at the time, 7/10. Sounds decent playing it now, I do enjoy driving rock and his voice is unusual, not entirely unlike one of my friends' sons' band Slowave. Poor Leno I also have forgotten, but it rates a 6/10. Don't L:et Me Down was one of Will's early songs that I liked, an actual 8/10. I was also still enjoying Lasgo singles, Pray grabbing a 7/10. Alive was also a decent 7/10 for S Club in a week when quite a few of the more significant acts failed to chart for me, so I will do a quick stocktake just in case theyve been missed off the A to Z in a mo!

Sum 41 managed a scraping-in 4/10, Rikky & Daz got a 3/10 and that was entirely for having Glen Campbell on the track with a credit - Rhinestone Cowboy topped my charts in 1975 and is a 10/10. All others DNC! December 2002 however, charting for me were Travis top ten with Love Will Come Through - not a single until 2004 apparently - George Harrison's Stuck In A Cloud off his posthumous album Brainwashed, also top 10, Aqualung's Good Times Gonna Come (8/10 but only a minor hit at 71 in the UK), Tori Amos A Sorta Fairytale peaked at 41 in the UK (6/10) and assorted other tracks like Chris Difford's Cowboys Are My Weakness.

Hello again, my laptop broke several weeks ago but I've finally got a new one now so recommencing catch-up with this thread!

Week 41

I was quite late to the original 'Café Del Mar' but absolutely love it now. The 2002 version is a pretty pointless update though!

My science teacher played us a catchy song to remember the Electromagnetic Spectrum but I'm pretty sure 'Bunsen Burner' has passed me by until now, oh my cheeseblock

I really like 'Down Boy', agree that the production does a lot of the heavy lifting (the producer has some interesting credentials like working with Björk and Massive Attack, so makes sense that it's similarly standout) but she does turn in another convincing sensual pop star performance nevertheless.

Oh Jakatta and Seal left the chart on a high (well, not counting WEST AFRICAHHHHHHH on Band Aid 30 for the latter lol) with 'My Vision' wub dreamy stuff.

'Formulae' was a good discovery! I especially enjoyed the fuzzy guitars and powerful vocals.

Week 42 and 43:

I discovered 'Children Of The Night' during weekly clubbercise classes as my instructor created some wacky, high energy choreography for it. I think it's quite a fun one to dance/workout to, but can't say I ever really listen to it outside of that context lol

Ooft poor Nelly and Excelly Rowland!! Tbf 'Dilemma' is pretty basic on paper, with a nursery rhyme chorus, but there's still something quite smooth and nostalgic about it for me all the same - especially the twinkly production. It's crazy to think that once upon a time Kelly Rowland's album was pushed ahead of Beyoncé's in the release schedule due to how much this smashed.

'New Direction' has no business being that good! The radio mix samples 'Magic Fly' by Space which is a big favourite. "I've been looking for a new fixation" is also a mood.

I don't think I've come across 'Reload' before, initially did a double take thinking I'd accidentally played 'ResuRection', but nope it's just very similar lol

I really enjoy the energy shifting throughout 'All My Life' as well, one of their best.

Forced to stan 'The Ketchup Song' getting a 9 from you cheeseblock school disco classic and a lot of fun indeed. It took me far too long to realise that the chorus interpolates 'Rapper's Delight'!

Oh so 'Dreaming Of You' is the song that was used in ADSA adverts at one point! Good to put a name to it now.

Week 44:

I haven't been too crazy about the last couple of Streets singles but 'Don't Mug Yourself' is my favourite since their debut. Love the urgent production and vivid scene setting in the lyrics

Not so keen on the lyrics of 'One Love' (e.g. the "city streets" / "hip-hop beats" rhyme takes me out of it a bit) but fair play that it's one of their signature songs now

I heavily associate 'Shiny Disco Balls' with Now 53! A quirky penultimate track on there... I like the bouncy house production a lot.

'Six Days' is a good final top 40 single for DJ Shadow. I'm glad we have UNKLE to keep up the DJ Shadow-adjacent universe for a bit longer even if he had since departed that project; they have a 2003 top 40 hit that I am fond of.

The Justified album is another one that I associate with my very young years as my dad had it on CD wub he would always recite the Clipse rap from 'Like I Love You' pretty well, I should test him all these years later lol. I remember the music video from the time and I was transfixed by Justin's moves and general star quality. He navigates his falsetto really well on the record too. The Neptunes of course deliver with their funky production laced with hip-hop grooves and Spanish guitar. Shame it didn't quite start his solo career off with a #1! That song would be my favourite of this batch too.
