April 19Apr 19 Week 26The first three hits here are the best for me by far. 'Stop Crying Your Heart', 'When You Look At Me' and 'Hot In Herre' were all brilliant in their own ways and Mis-teeq's is fine but yeah one of their weakest for sure.'Get Free' sounds solid too and am sure I've heard it before as it sounds familiar. The Athlete track is quite good as well.
April 20Apr 20 Catching up on the last two sections... 🩷'Get Me Off' is a quirky, layered banger as per usual from Basement Jaxx *.* I recall reading that the song was originally intended for Janet Jackson, so would've been interesting to hear her take on it too. Agreed that it deserved better in the chart!I remember 'Hot In Herre' from the time but was definitely too young for those lyrics it has aged well anyway... that Neptunes production is suitably sizzling.'Stop Crying Your Heart Out' has emerged as my favourite Heathen Chemistry single now, definitely one of their best 2000s songs overall I agree that it shares similar lyrical DNA with 'Don't Look Back In Anger'. It's a refreshing vocal delivery from Liam and I love how the instrumentation progresses within the piano intro, drums and outro riff.I vaguely remember Bill & Ben being a thing but don't recall the song. Those verse melodies are reminding me of 'Livin' La Vida Loca'! It's like Bob the Builder having a crack at that.I'm not a huge fan of Taylor Dayne's voice so prefer the Kelly version by default. My clubbercise instructor recently added that cover to our exercise class playlist, the impact. The version of 'I'm Gonna Be Alright' that I know is the one Rich mentioned with the same sample as 'I Got 5 On It', unfortunately that does most of the heavy lifting. I know times have changed (still pretty recently - Iggy's 'Fancy' and Eminem's 'Rap God' got away with it a decade ago off the top of my head) but I hate hearing the r-word slur in a song.I watched Preeya Kalidas' entire stint on EastEnders at the time (2009 - 2012) but my knowledge of her singing was limited to 2010's 'Shimmy' (got some music channel airplay and was sent to BJSC five years later in my debut contest ) and her feature on Skepta's 'Cross My Heart' (Shakespeare has been awfully quiet since "I never had a pen but I made a mark") for years. 'Shakalaka Baby' only entered my life two months ago while watching a TOTP-style 'Eastenders Sings at the BBC' programme for the 40th anniversary and it is admittedly an earworm Crazy that Amy Studt's team waited an entire year to follow up 'Just A Little Girl' unlucky that Avril swooped in during that interim.'Baby's Got A Temper' is a rare Prodigy miss for me but thankfully their next chart stint is a triumph and one I did follow at the time 🥰I wasn't familiar with 'American English' until it popped up in a competition on here (I'd like to say favourite non-top 10 hits of the 2000s or something), a good'un indeed.Cool for Gary Numan to have his own modern chart moment post-'Freak Like Me' as Rich mentioned - but also after being sampled in 'Where's Your Head At' the previous year! I wasn't familiar with this specific song and your assessment was correct - I'm rather into its dark and twisted sound on first listen 🖤I feel like I should be into Red Hot Chili Peppers more than I actually am, judging by people with similar taste on here, but 'By The Way' is fantastic and their best song for me!Nice top pick - 'Clubbed to Death' is an iconic, atmospheric piece of music
April 20Apr 20 Author Another big 2 week bunch and once again it’s packed with good stuff with the duds in a small minority. And once again I’ve put 2 very contrasting tracks at the top. April 21Apr 21 Yeah the chorus of 'Shooting Star' is a bit too shrill and high pitched for my liking. This was a problem with a few of the 2011-12 dance/ dancepop songs too.Dee Dee's 'Forever' is my favourite of the 2002 eurotrance songs really good and one of the less cheesy ones.'Foolish' has such a nice piano in the production.I found 'Just Won't Do' a bit annoying at the time because it was everywhere at the time!I don't remember the Angie Stone song from the time sadly, but I love the mashup KDA did a few years ago featuring the original vocal 'The Human Stone'. Edited April 21Apr 21 by TheSnake
April 21Apr 21 Unfortunately 'Work It Out' is a Neptunes production that I'm not so fond of, a bit of a mess. Not too keen on the vocal delivery either. Thankfully Beyoncé's next dabble with brass is a lot more up my street... *.*There's a home video from this time where I'm dressed up as a fairy playing in the garden with my brother and 'Anyone Of Us (Stupid Mistake)' is blasting on the radio, a fun time capsule! I agree that it's a well crafted pop song and definitely a step forward for him after that mediocre 'Unchained Melody' cover.'LK' is one of those songs I couldn't put a name to for years but definitely recognised as Kisstory rinsed it when I regularly tuned in. Stamina MC's two hits both make me want to be on a summer holiday, alas a rainy Bank Holiday Monday indoors will have to do! I loved his collab with Shy FX and Lily Allen, 'Roll The Dice'. 2018 was very late for all artists involved to get together, so sadly no chart impact, but a D&B banger nonetheless.I really like the piano loop of 'Foolish'. Incredible that it spent 10 weeks at #1 in the U.S. I've never heard either of those My Vitriol songs before but they're sounding good on first listen, some shoegaze influences in thereInteresting that the Coral's introductory track is called 'Goodbye' I don't think I'm familiar with this one either but I'm enjoying the 60s feel of it.'It Just Won't Do' was another great One Hit Wonders of the Millennium discovery - uplifting Latin-inspired house with a fun trumpet riff indeed.Ooh I was wondering why 'Wish I Didn't Miss You' felt so familiar when I checked out some Angie songs after her recent passing and I think Snake has just solved that for me, I know KDA's 2019 update 'The Human Stone' from the time. Great source material anyway - #30 feels too low a peak for it!Fischerspooner are a brilliant top pick *.* I first discovered them when the also fab 'TopBrazil' was sent to BJSC in 2018 and was pleasantly surprised to later discover that they had a top 40 hit!
April 21Apr 21 Week 27 & 28'By The Way' a strong return for the Chili's but I think I did prefer a couple of others over it from this era. Was great listening to the album a couple of years ago in this forum too. 'Just A Little Girl' is a pop rock classic for me too and the album was also rather good as well. 'I'm Gonna Be Alright' is great as well in the version radio pushed.'Wherever You Will Go' is a great MOR rock song and have some added association with it via college. 'American English' is pleasant as is 'Tell It To My Heart'.'Clubbed To Death' is really strong so a good choice for top song. 'The Day It Rained Forever' is nice enough. Enjoying the production for The Prodigy also, less keen on the lyrics as stated by others.'Rip' is really intense but in a positive way and 'Shakalaka Baby' sounds like Eurovision mixed with Holly Valance's material lol. On the messy side for me though unforch.
April 21Apr 21 That Fisherspooner song with its throbbing instrumental sounds definitely like an influence for one of 2003's #1s!
April 23Apr 23 My Friends Over You is an absolute classic, I love it. Easily a solid 10 for me, a fun intro to the genre for anyone not totally into this kind of stuff.Natalie Imbruglia's music was always so enjoyable, "Beauty..." builds really nicely to a climax. Michelle Branch I love her music, this one didn't hit as hard as her other stuff but still a solid 7.5. A Thousand Miles is just iconic and referenced still to this day, 4 weeks at #18 is a fun little stat.
April 23Apr 23 Author At the time “Underneath Your Clothes” was my favourite by miles. I still do love it - I rarely enjoy soppy ballads but there’s something about Shakira’s touch that makes it special. But these days I’m falling slightly more for the manic charm of “Rockstar” with the hard hitting rap and some early Pharrell sung vocals. Sorry Viper - not feeling “My Friends Over You” at all.9N*E*R*DRock StarI prefer the high octane Jason Nevins remix of this but the original is great too: a bracing and powerful rock hip hop track8ShakiraUnderneath Your ClothesI love this ballad: the endearing 2nd language lyrics, the way her voice breaks up in places and gentle instrumental touches8Dirty VegasGhostsThey won't have any more Top 40s apart from a re-release of "Days Go By": this is another gorgeous atmospheric track8Linkin ParkH! April 24Apr 24 Some really good ones this week!Love Shakira, Narcotic Thrust, Michelle Branch, Natalie Imbruglia, Darius, Doves, New Found Glory and Primal Scream. What a week! There was a really good remix of that Streets track kicking around at the time which improved it.That's one of Britney's worst for sure, I'm still baffled why it was chosen as a single. I guess she could get top 10 with anything at this point.
April 24Apr 24 Wow the Neptunes really were everywhere right now! I don't mind 'Boys', I found the album version a bit limp but enjoy the slick remix more. Not a Britney classic though.'Automatic High' is a bit of a guilty pleasure I don't remember it from 2002 but it was on my Pop Party 3 CD a few years later which I absolutely rinsed as a kid. I do agree that the themes are a bit too old for them, but that chorus does still give me pangs of nostalgia. Wow this George campaign has been pretty head-scratching so far with 'Freeek!' and now this. I love the original Human League song but agreed that 'Shoot the Dog' feels a bit undercooked.Screamadelica is an all-time great record but I don't know much other Primal Scream material. I'm quite liking 'Miss Lucifer' on first listen - particularly the relentless electro-industrial synths. That Natalie Imbruglia track is also new to me and similarly has interesting production, an enjoyable downtempo sound.'Falling' is a big standout for me this week! What a shame that it fell short of a top 20 chart placing. It has quite a 60s wall of sound-esque charm.Darius will forever remind me of BuzzJack *.* it's sweet that he had enough dedicated fans on here to keep an Artist Forum going for so long after his commercial peak. As mentioned before, I watched Popstars on YouTube for the first time last year so have seen Darius' stint on there quite recently, infamous '...Baby One More Time' performance and all on the show he said something along the lines of wanting to achieve a #1 hit within the next 5 years - which seemed a bit deluded after Britney-gate, but he did just that! Hopefully Pop Idol in full turns up on YouTube one day so I can witness what the shift in the tide was like for him, from laughing stock to pop star. I can see that his image obviously got an overhaul. Anyway, 'Colourblind' is a solid pop song and kudos to him for the song-writing passion too, shame he passed away so young.I loved 'A Thousand Miles' when I was younger, not quite as crazy about it nowadays but do still think the piano riff is lovely.I adore 'Days Go By' but have not been familiar with Dirty Vegas' work otherwise. I should give their self-titled album a go as 'Ghosts' is sounding pretty good! It's all about the Jason Nevins remix of 'Rock Star' for me as well I remember discovering it on an old 2002 chart show and immediately adding it to my playlists. It's like a whirlwind of rap, rock and dance all in one.
April 25Apr 25 Angie Stone classic ❤️ 9/10. The original Backstabbers is 10/10, love it. Fischerspooner rings no electronic bell with me. Corner Of The Earth is very much a forgotten one with me not heard it since, but it got a top 30 rating from me (7/10) for Jamiroquai. Dee Dee I agree with an 8/10, though it's another I dont recall. It Just Won't Do was a dance club hit, though, so thats stayed with me, even though oddly it peaked lower (7/10 but it feels more like an 8/10 these days). Foolish I rated a lot, I liked Ashanti stuff for the most part and this one was the biggest, 9/10. Pet Shop Boys go a bit guitar-y shock album! This is my least-favourite of their albums (Release) and the singles were also a bit low-key, though obv they went top 10 for me. I Get Along gets an official 9/10 rating of the time, but TBH I'd knock it down to 7/10 I think. The video is much better than Home And Dry, though, rats roaming the Underground a truly bizarre choice. You can see them for free in any city if you go for a walk at night. I actually bought the video-DVD-version with the video for that one.The Gareth Gates/Beyonce and Bryan Adams tracks are all pleasant enough, I give 'em all a rating of 7/10, Bryan's the most forgettable with the Gareth Gates one the more memorable, I liked the tune. Alicia Keys, again pleasant enough but very much a 5/10 sort a thing. That leaves the also pleasant Darren Hayes for scraping a 6/10. That's a lot of mildly pleasant going on. The rest all DNC. 😲
April 25Apr 25 always liked NERD stuff, and Rockstar is no exception, though a mere 7/10 as opposed to Shakira grabbing an 8/10, not quite up there with breasts like mountains. I always feel there's a hint of Cilla Black in the back of the throat-ness which will probably horrify! 😇 Dirty Vegas I generally love, I entered 2014 flop Let The Night into BJSC as it was fab, and Ghosts is a definite 9/10 not quite up with Days Go By but a goodie. A Thousand Miles is hugely memorable and got a 7/10 from me, but I got a bit too much airplay of it over the years, which is ironic as most of the tracks from this era dont. Poor Darius still famous, as is Colourblind, though as I didnt watch Pop Idol I was never that fussed of the hits coming off the talent shows and rated this a mere 4/10. Narcotic Thrust dance choon though, dancefloor goodie and still sounds fab 9/10. Pretty much usually liked anything Will Smith from the 80's to the 00's, Men In Black II a fun film, still very watchable and Black Suits a fine 8/10. This mid-section is doing it for me, Doves a decent 7/10, Natalie Imbruglia and McAlmont/Butler (also a recent BJSC entry but not from me) both rate an 8 or 9/10, probably closer to 8. David McAlmont's voice is amazing when used on the right song, and the right song is Yes. Classic and stunning. The rest of the batch DNC bar Michelle Branch (3/10), Diddy (4/10) and George Michael's Human League revamp which I utterly loved. The video is hilarious, the sample terrific and yes there is no hook whatsoever, but I kinda like the animated journey and the teasing of thinking you are going to get a hook but don't really. 10/10.
April 25Apr 25 Week 29 & 30'Anyone Of Us (Stupid Mistake)' defintely Gareth's best song, not that that's hard exactly. 'Foolish' is a solid R'n'b number and a fan of 'Here I Am' which I bought the CD of. There's been several versions that aren't the same on Spotify/Youtube that are on said CD though. 'Forever' is a banger.'Strange Relationship' is okay and 'This Is My Sound' I wasn't sure if I heard it before but as it goes on I must've done as it sounds a little familiar. Sounding good nonetheless.'Shooting Star' is another banger but 'True Love Never Dies' is ahead of it for sure. 'Work It Out' is annoying, it's okay in the context of the Austin Movie but as a song not a fan. Like the Angie, System Of A Down songs and 'The Gentle Art of Choking' is the superior of the two My Vitriol tracks for me.

April 25Apr 25 Disappointed you didn't feel "my friends over you", such a simple fun sing a long track. April 25Apr 25 I really liked that Mad'house song and its beats at the time when I heard it on the radio, I thought it was a remix, didn't know it was a cover or that the style of beats were from the song Black Legend - You See The Trouble With Me!ATC - Around The World was one eurodance song I did like at the time.
