August 22, 2024Aug 22 Bit of meh group for me there, no Idea who St Etienne are never heard of them 😱
August 22, 2024Aug 22 REM - on another day i could have maybe given points to!! Beach Bous had that many hits !!
August 22, 2024Aug 22 ^ One Direction and Little Mix the other two. I really should have gone and looked at the forums instead of just going from memory  Little Mix in front of Girls Aloud and One Direction just in front of Take That is my guess. I'll go edit for the 3rd time

August 22, 2024Aug 22 Three wonderful acts in that batch. REM have some great material, Automatic for the People is a deserved huge seller but I've always been most fond of New Adventures in Hi-Fi. Like their slightly more electronic leanings on Up too. Saint Etienne are such a strong pop band and it's amazing to see them this high. My favourites are probably their 90s work, especially Tiger Bay, but they were still releasing great music way after then with the likes of Tales From Turnpike House as recently as 2021 with I've Been Trying To Tell You. Last, but definitely not least, my 30 pointer finally fell in the form of the Chemical Brothers. They didn't put a foot wrong in the 90s with all three albums excellent and some amazing singles along the way. Whilst they didn't quite maintain that high standard, they've consistently released some essential singles and have one of my favourite discographies of any act. Every album has some great moments on it. I also think they did a hell of a lot for electronic music, taking it from the clubs and transferring it to festivals and well respected albums - their live sets are one of the best gigs I've ever seen.
August 22, 2024Aug 22 Agree these are three brilliant groups today! Saint Etienne are a fabulous addition to the top 50. R.E.M. are still my favourite group of all time - they had my 30 points last time and would surely have climbed if I'd done the same again, so are the greatest victims of my new criteria this time around. However, The Chemical Brothers are the greatest remaining beneficiaries as they just missed out on my votes last time, but I charted four of their songs last year, so added them in here. My favourites from them are 'Hey Boy Hey Girl', 'Go' and 'Where Do I Begin' which I give more plays than 'Setting Sun' these days, as monumental as that still is. Beach Bous had that many hits !! Another reason we need a Beach Boys rate - they didn't just do 'Good Vibrations' and 'God Only Knows'!
August 22, 2024Aug 22 I forgot them both too, and I visit the Little Mix forum. I'm pretty sure I posted in the Little Mix forum today, if not I definitely browsed it
August 22, 2024Aug 22 Stop revealing so many of my big votes! :arrr: Love Chemical Brothers, classic 90s/early 00s back catalogue and still largely making great music to this day (granted I have still missed quite a few of their eras).
August 22, 2024Aug 22 Chemical Brothers  agreed with Dandy that they are an amazing act to witness live.
August 22, 2024Aug 22 I'm pretty sure I posted in the Little Mix forum today, if not I definitely browsed it  I’m just going to say it’s been a long week. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!
August 22, 2024Aug 22 Decent bunch in there and there was a time when R.E.M. would have been right up the top end of my list probably right before they released Out of Time. Unfortunately, whilst most of their early '90s output was good and often great, the latter half saw them go off the boil for me. And the less said about Shiny Happy People the better. I'd agree a Beach Boys rate would be good but I'd like to proffer an R.E.M. one too at some point (although to include non charting singles) Edited August 22, 2024Aug 22 by Severin
August 23, 2024Aug 23 Surprised but delighted to see Saint Etienne so high, with a big climb and doubling their points. At one point they were my favourite British group, and I didn’t realise they’d be so popular with others. Their biggest hits were pure pop but their albums were not: indie-dance maybe? Their ballad ‘Hobart Paving’ is one of my all time favourite tracks.
August 23, 2024Aug 23 Wow at Saint Etienne. I love He's On The Phone (a cruel #11 peak) but don't know much else by them and wouldn't have guessed in a million years their name would come up this high. Will have to check their other stuff out. REM have some great songs but aren't a particular favourite of mine overall. Unlike the Chemical Brothers who are my favourite dance group. Echo what the earlier posters have said.
August 23, 2024Aug 23 That’s a lot of points lost for me! All 3 of those acts were / are consistently great. I’m quite basic with my favourites. “He’s On The Phone” is a banger. “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” is awesome and “I Was Born On Christmas Day” is a beauty to listen to when the time comes. Chemical Brothers favourites: Galvanize Hey Boy Hey Girl Block Rockin’ Beats REM favourites: Everybody Hurts Losing My Religion Man On The Moon And I’m sorry but I love “Shiny Happy People” :P
August 23, 2024Aug 23 REM are great, many classic singles, especially from the early 90s through to about 2003. But Saint Etienne are a real favourite, I'm astonished but happy to see them top 50 here  So many of their singles are great but they have so many absolutely beautiful album tracks too. I think three of my five most listened to songs of theirs are album tracks from different eras (Over The Border, Sweet Arcadia, Music Again), along with Tell Me Why (The Riddle) and He's On The Phone. I love I Was Born On Christmas Day too. I think Bob, Pete and Sarah just get pop music, and how to bottle and sell nostalgia, wistfulness and suburban England in a way that doesn't feel depressing or tacky, but feels beautiful.
