September 11, 2024Sep 11 So we’ve got two turn of the century British girl groups and a heritage mixed gender European act left? Is that right?
September 11, 2024Sep 11 Sugababes were an excellent Pop group between 2000 and 2005. Sadly, once Mutya left they dropped in to being pretty generic and lost their edge but that period alone probably marks them out as at least musically and creatively, the best British girl group of them all.
September 11, 2024Sep 11 I’ve a feeling last time’s #3 could win it with the tour being fresh in everyone’s mind. Last time’s #4 have had the big comeback and the subsequent show too. I feel like last time’s winners haven’t been doing as much. I don’t know if that will be reflected in the votes but it’s just a hunch.
September 11, 2024Sep 11 1.0 - I remember liking Overload and being intrigued by them, but I didn’t throw myself into becoming a fan at that point. My mum loved their second single New Year, and bought their debut album One Touch because of that! So that was during Christmas 2000. I probably wouldn’t have heard the album that early on if she hadn’t bought it for herself. I gave it a listen and loved it! It’s such a strong album, remarkable when you consider the girls were only around 15/16. I remember being dismayed when Soul Sound only reached #30 because I assumed that might be the last we’d hear from the Sugababes. Thankfully I was wrong! 2.0 - Obviously the commercial success became huge in comparison to 1.0, and some of their best singles come from this line up! Angels with Dirty Faces and Taller in More Ways are good albums but for me less so than One Touch. However, Three - I think that album is excellent. Sugababes at the height of their powers! 3.0 - They still delivered! Clearly About You Now became *the* signature hit, but there was more to them than that one song. Catfights and Spotlights is a great album. There’s some real gems on it that I’m convinced would be celebrated had they been recorded by 2.0, so I find it a shame that this album was overlooked and is often disregarded. It’s very misrepresented by its single choices. Clearly the Sweet 7 era was a pivot in sound & image after Catfights wasn’t too successful. We only got Get Sexy released with Keisha before she was ousted. I think this album was an early example of the way popular music was heading then, a sound that was hugely successful by 2011/2012. I fully believe the Sweet 7 era would have been successful had Keisha stayed… 4.0 - There’s not much to say, as this was the tail end of the group’s initial run, and they never really got the moment to prove themselves as this line up. Their one album was meant to be a 3.0 release. It’ll always be a bit mad that we ended up with a group with 3 completely different girls to who it started with! 1.0, reunited - It’s a shame that things didn’t work out for them in 2013 (particularly as the music, eventually released in 2022, is great). Despite that false start and some years in the wilderness, I’m happy to see them currently touring & doing the festival circuit a decade later! They’re strengthening their legacy and reminding people how many amazing hits they have. Bring on a new album! Oops at the impromptu essay, but overall they’re definitely one of my favourite British groups and it’s wonderful to see them in the Top 5.
September 11, 2024Sep 11 Hmm well there’s only 1 viable winner left now. Sugababes should’ve been at least 2 given the 4 left
September 11, 2024Sep 11 Sugababes were just outside my vote. I love a handful of singles by them but I was never obsessed with them like I am a handful of other girl bands. I think all the lineup changes affected the band for me a bit, and when none of the originals were left it was a jumping the shark moment and the group became a brand, not a band. But they put out some fantastic songs at every stage of their career (Sweet 7 aside), and deserve a good placing. I love the original three girls the most and saw them at a festival last year and they were so good live. But I appreciate Heidi’s vast contribution to the band during its most successful period.
September 11, 2024Sep 11 Sweet 7 felt like the only time Sugababes were chasing trends to me. Both Change and Catfights are underrated albums and the latter in particular is really undersold by its single choices. Totally get why 2.0 in particular get such love though, that's where the majority of the Sugababes classics come from. I've always had a lot of love for Sugababes and they fully deserve to be up this high, because despite how the group lost its way (particularly by 4.0), it can't be understated just how hard 1.0 have worked to make the Sugababes name viable again (quite literally too). The outpouring of love they've received on the festival circuit, and finally being able to release a second album in that line-up, I didn't think it would happen for them considering how much of a joke they seemed to become. Not to mention how The Lost Tapes is a contender for their very best album! The chemistry between Mutya, Keisha and Siobhan is insane and no band has better harmonies to my ears, especially having had the good fortune to see them live four times in the last two years - incredible when just a few years ago I'd never have expected to see them even once!
September 11, 2024Sep 11 Place your bets now for who is getting bronze position! I’m going with Girls Aloud finishing 3rd.
September 11, 2024Sep 11 I agree with Catfights actually, a very solid album packed with strong pop songs with stellar production for the era it was released, didn’t it have a lot of stuff with Robyn’s producer Klaus Åhlund? But Girls was such a misfire of a lead single (I dislike it more than I dislike Get Sexy, it just reminds me of the naff Boots ads). And No Can Do was hardly much of a step up. September 11, 2024Sep 11 Sugababes are a great pop band. I didn't point them and I kinda wish I had done. They have a lot of good singles and some decent album tracks too (hello Ace Reject) but my absolute favourite is Flatline
September 11, 2024Sep 11 I think Girls Aloud will be bronze but hope I’m wrong and that they are top 2
September 11, 2024Sep 11 Sugababes! Now there’s a pop band I can get behind, more urban, sassy and better music. They had so many classics. Saw them live all the way back in 2002!

September 11, 2024Sep 11 Sugababes are sublime, they were close to getting my 30. I saw them live in Australia at the start of last year and it was an absolutely sensational concert. Never thought I’d get to see them live in my wildest dreams.
September 11, 2024Sep 11 For a long time I rated Sugababes above Girls Aloud and they were my ultimate 00s girlband! Girls Aloud however overtook them as the years passed as I felt they were more consistent however the peak Sugababes years are exceptional! 1.0 - I never really noticed them at the time they passed me by. 2.0 - My favourite line up, I was hooked from Freak like me all the way to Mutya leaving. Heidi brought the slight poppier element while Mutya and Keisha kept the edge to their sound... Mutya's voice in particular! 2.0 are one of the best girlbands ever second only to my fave Spices. 3.0 - Continued to enjoy them even if they were less edgy. Amelle played her part well and Change is a great album with Catfghts having gems too. 4.0 - Yawn 5.0 / Originals - Loved them since their return, Siobhan is incredible, they are my second fave line up now after years of it being 3.0.

Seeing posts like this make me really happy that people are noticing how incredible the original line up was/is. .2.0 were incredible as well.
September 12, 2024Sep 12 Think last times #1 will drop to 3 as like Julian said the other two benefit from tours etc. Only one act left I voted anyhow and so am pulling for them personally to be 1!
