That's me out. I gave ABBA points due to weight of memorable hits and great comeback singles a couple of years ago. Find their studio albums too hit and miss to be really into though (Voyage being a perfect example - Little Things, really?!)

The top 2 were nowhere near my votes but would prefer to see the Spice Girls win on the basis of cultural impact, their total dominance of pop culture in the second half of 1996 is an early cultural memory for me.

I wasn’t dismissing them I just think they sounded like a lot of other pop bands of the time and of before and after. It’s just my opinion though that’s all, not stating the fact of the matter.
I truly don't believe there's any other pop band who would release songs like Sexy! No No No..., Biology and Love Machine so I think we'll have to agree to disagree...!
Were Girls Aloud a great pop group or a good pop group with great production?
I always felt that Girls Aloud had a bunch of really strong Pop songs and sonically there was a fair few interesting things going on in a lot of them but with the exception of Sarah and maybe Cheryl if I'm generous, the girls themselves had nowhere near the levels of personality or character of Spice Girls or Sugababes. No slight on them as they all seemed pleasant enough but they were much less distinct personalities.

Girls Aloud were essentially Xenomania's muse, what they had together was something unique and special which can never be replicated.

We most certainly will.

I just think they sounded like a lot of other pop bands of the time and of before and after.

Which other pop bands do you think they sounded like? (Not having a go, I'm just curious who you liken them to!)

I really feel the opposite, that Girls Aloud were rather out of step from other pop groups of the time, and that this is what gave them the edge to become as successful (commercially and critically) as they were.

Xenomania really threw the rule book out of the window; their partnership led to some very innovative pop music that was quite unlike anything else around in my view. The way their songs are constructed, it could be really surprising... you never quite knew what you were going to get from an original Girls Aloud song! I mean, 'Biology'... who else has a song like that!

As someone who very intently followed all three groups, I think they all delivered personality/character!

Sugababes were a bit "too cool for school" in their presentation, particularly during 1.0 and 2.0 eras - a bit of a moody bordering on sullen vibe, yet not unlikeably so, just in a teenager sort of way - they still came across polite and pleasant alongside that. However I don't think you could ever really pinpoint one particular Sugababe as being a loudmouth, etc. I feel like if I was to level "less distinct personalities" at any of the three girl groups, it would go to the Sugababes.

Whereas with Girls Aloud, I think they were all actually quite different from each other. Not in a way that slaps you around the face like the Spice Girls, but there if you're looking more closely. Sarah was definitely the "life of the party", the one who brought the most energy to the proceedings, maybe the one you couldn't quite predict what she'd do or say next. I'd say Nicola has an energy similar to how I described the Sugababes. Cheryl can be outspoken, cheeky and charming. Kimberley, I'd probably classify as being the pleasantly sensible one. Nadine is incredibly quirky, and not just because of her accent!

(Sorry, if I'm given the excuse to talk about girl groups, then I'll go on a bit :kink: Although writing this during a Top 2 reveal of girl groups, seems like as good a time as any for me to do this! )

A whopping 32 voters for ABBA and not a single 30 pointer!

I shamefully didn't vote, but ABBA would have received my 30 points, and Steps my 29 points. Unsure of how much of a difference it would have made, as I'd also have scored highly the two groups remaining.

I'm a massive fan of the majority of the top 10, having seen 4 of the top 6 in concert, in addition to hologram ABBA. Also been lucky enough to see all 6 Sugababes perform at Manchester Pride, the first time with Heidi/Jade/Amelle and this year with the classic Mutya/Keisha/Siobhán lineup. Looking forward to seeing who triumphs, but either way, I'll be happy with the result.

I think for sheer range in output, I’d much prefer GA to win.

Not that I voted for either of the top 2.

Well you’d certainly have brought Steps up to 5th ahead of Little Mix.

I love all of Girls Alouds personalities but as an absolute Stan of them and them being my number 1 of all time I followed everything they did so felt like I got to know all their individual personalities but I guess to the casual listener they are not as apparent as the Spice Girls
If GA win this LOL 😝
