What I notice about Steps is that most of the people who voted for them gave them a lot of points!

Not sure they’ve made the top ten in terms of total number of user voters -

1-5th 25+ voters

6th - Queen, Pet Shop Boys - 24 voters

8th - The Killers, The Saturdays, 23 voters

10th The Beatles - 22 voters

11th - Coldplay, Steps - 21 voters

13th - All Saints - 20 vpters

I think that’s all the groups with over 20 voters - interesting that no one has a majority (27) of voter support - yet!

 I look forward to it!

Don’t Stop Me Now is the main offender. I don’t even know what it is about it but… *shudders* :kink: I dislike McFly’s version even more!

I can’t say I’m keen on We Will Rock You or We Are the Champions either 🤫

Everybody knows what Don't Stop Me Now is about...

Interestingly, Brian May absolutely hates it, not for its subject matter but for where it led Freddie

Not everybody... do enlighten!

Oh yeah, for me Steps are naff are as naff as it gets. Not even ironicaly enjoyable. Faye was lovely though

Oh really? OK, it's said to be about the excessive debauchery of having a good time but is particularly about gay sex, partying and doing cocaine. The video is fairly unsubtle in the way Freddie is dressed - the Mineshaft (a gay nightclub) T-shirt and the stereotypical look of the time

Brian May has said it marks the point Freddie got swept away with the drugs, casual sex and partying that ultimately led to him getting HIV

To clarify, I wrote “I don’t even know what it is about it” (as in, I can’t pinpoint why I dislike it as much as I do), not “I don’t even know what it’s about”

You absolutely did. Apologies. My bad.

Spotted that too, I think 20 of their 21 voters gave them +18 or more?

For me this rate has hit its full jump the shark moment after a few close calls lower down, not really sure what to say any more!

You mean when voting for their favourites, voters actually gave a group they liked points :o

What a jump the shark moment that is!

Agree 100%, it's AWFUL. It makes my teeth itch every time I hear it!

(and also 'We Are The Champions')

Add me to the Don't Stop Me Now hate train, I can't stand it

Steps are brilliant and I think the reaction from this thread shows just how overlooked their appeal is. After all, I doubt anybody approached this game from an objective "most influential band" perspective, so to see a poptastic, feel-good band like Steps, who famously have a big following on here, as high as #6 isn't remotely shocking to me, and anything less wouldn't feel representative of the site. There's a huge place in music for fun, uplifting pop and I think maintaining their consistency (arguably even upping the quality post-reunion) for so long is a major achievement and shows clear commitment to their brand and artistry. Like or dislike them, it's hard to argue past them deserving a place in the music world.

I only really gravitated towards Steps in the last few years, but Say You'll Be Mine has cemented itself as one of their best songs for me, so nice to see that chosen for the video embed! 5,6,7,8 and Tragedy put me off them for years, I've warmed to the latter a lot but the former still annoys me :kink: otherwise, a very strong singles discography!

Agreed, '5, 6, 7, 8' remains pretty bad! 'Say You'll Be Mine' is good but my absolute favourite Steps song would have to be 'It's The Way You Make Me Feel' oh and 'Heartbeat' is also up there!

It's more the fact that a rate for "Favourite Female-Led Pop Group" would have returned the exact same top 6 as the rate for "Favourite Group"!

Its very Buzzjack then

No worries at all! That’s interesting context you’ve shared about Don’t Stop Me Now though - my interpretation of the song was very surface level to be fair. I guess it is for a lot of people too, because… forgive me for being stereotypical, but it strikes me as a song that is very embraced by heterosexual men, as an anthem they like to bellow out. So it being about Freddie throwing himself into hedonism in the gay world, that’s quite a contrast!

I don't really see why this is any sort of problem, other than simply disagreeing with the Buzzjack consensus (which is fine of course). It's well known that this site has a penchant for girl groups and female pop singers in general.

Can't say I'm fond of Steps in general but I do like a few of theirs songs. 'Heartbeat' probably their best but also enjoy 'It's The Way You Make Me Feel', 'Stomp' and 'Deeper Shade Of Blue' to an extent and 'Last Thing On My Mind' too for that matter!
