not people already attributing Sabrina being #1 to Payola 😭 maybe it’s because it’s one of the best songs of the year so far…. just an idea lol

but nobody said autopayola is a female-thing only

in fact the one that big started the new spottify push for autopayola was Djo

that had a huge amount of autopayola

and then Espresso was ridiculously pushed by autopayola

but now all big songs get autopayola, Lunch and Birds of a Feather are getting too

it's like the new normal and it's just helping the songs become bigger

it's not what makes them hits, it's what makes the bigger hits

I think autoplay or not, Espresso, End Of Everything and the Billie songs would be big hits anyway so not sure I get the fuss really.

It just seems like something boring to complain about.

Watch as Taylor Swift and Sabrina SUDDENLY become far less friendly

Lorde and Selena are perfect friends for Taylor. Thwy're not commercially big, and Selena barely has a charts presence outside the US, so they're not a threat. Sabrina is now a threat .

I guess the complaint with autoplay is that instead of getting something related to what you’ve been playing that might be an interesting discovery it seems you’re now more likely to get one of the big hits of the moment. A bit of a shame but very much a first world problem of course.

I will agree Spotify is annoying for this but you can just turn the setting off. The one really annoying thing that Spotify is doing lately is using "smart shuffle" as the first option to go to - like no??? I want to listen to my music ??

Crunched the numbers.

Chances of #1

Houdini - 84%

Espresso - 14%

Please Please Please - 2%

Crunched what numbers?

On the topic of why PPP is doing crazy numbers, I think we can safely say it's down to a mix of it being a great pop song and it following the behemoth Espresso. 2024 is the year she becomes a main pop girl, just like Katy in 2008 and Rihanna in 2007. :cheeseblock:

The fact that last summer it only took 300k to go #1 some days, now this year there’s rarely anything below 700k, it is a bit fishy

Just wanted to clarify my comment earlier today was clearly sarcastic!
Well she did get quite lucky having her first hit be named after a coffee when we know coffee and whiskey are big trends in lyrics this year.

YES!!! Threw me off when I got Miley - Used To Be Young like 2 songs in to me playing my Kelly Clarkson playlist! Thought I’d made a mistake adding that song to my playlist lol.

There must be some explanation because Spotify’s user base hasn’t more than doubled over the past year has it? There have been huge outlier hits before but never so many in such a short space of time. Since Stick Season I’d say the numbers at the top have just gone insane

Have other countries seen similar increases or is this a UK thing?

Spotify has been growing quite a lot the last year or so, in part due to their aggressive marketing. This is for Q1 2024:

Spotify’s total number of Monthly Active Users, which combine paying users and ad-supported users, grew 19% YoY to 615 million.

That was up 13 million MAUs from the 602 million reported for the prior quarter (Q4 2023)

That's globally, but it would translate quite well to the UK numbers. I also think there's a lot more big releases/excitement around new music this year than last which is why so many songs are doing big numbers.
