7 June 1999 saw the UK release of 'Beautiful Stranger', the lead single to the 'Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me' soundtrack. Written and produced with William Orbit, the song is a

psychedelic pop song, inspired by music from the 60s when the film is predominantly set. It became a huge success around the world, including #1 in Canada, Finland, Iceland and Italy; in the UK, it debuted at #2 with an impressive 136k sales and completed 1999 as the most played song of the year. The song wasn't released commercially in the US, however reached #19 on the Billboard Hot 100 on the strength of radio play alone. The music video features Mike Myers in character as Austin Powers and is assigned a mission to capture "master of disguise" Madonna who has been seducing top agents.

S Club 7 beat this to number 1 with Bring It All Back!

BS was all over radio and i think its a shame Madonna seems to have forgotten this track!

I used to be so obsessed with this at the time and it was probably one of my absolute faves when I was about 12.

Of course since then it's slipped way down my rankings, but I still get so much joy out of this when I listen to it

It's such an amazing song and video. I just love it a lot. :cheer:

I'm the same! It's so playful and Madonna seems relaxed and care-free singing it; I imagine it would have been a welcome shift following the more serious tone of 'Ray of Light'. The song itself feels very accessible and I think it's easy to see why it was such a smash on radio. A shame Madonna has neglected it since - is she not a fan of it?

For a song that was so massive at the time, the numbers it's pulling in nowadays are really diabolical. :( It sold 491k in 1999 and its total has only risen to 557k as of August 2019. 5 years later and it's still not Platinum - if it was certified this Friday, it would have been selling an average of 169 chart sales each week. I think its weekly sales could be as low as 100, which would put its total at 582k and a Platinum certification would be due in November 2027.

^ it wasn't on streaming for year’s due to it not being on a studio album, number 31 on Celebration album.

It was not released in full in the states.

This is such a classic Madonna track for me and it was such a huge hit at the time of release. It seems to have been forgotten now, but probably because Madonna pays it dust now. I wonder why?
