Posted July 22, 20241 yr Hi all! This thread is the thread for covering Athletics at the Olympics this year.. Feel free to discuss all the ins and outs of Athletics. Any predictions you may have, support for the athletes and anything else you notice as we kick off on 1st August!
July 31, 20241 yr So the athletics programme kicks off at the ungodly hour of 6:30 in the morning tomorrow UK time with the 20km race walk. The women's 20km race walk will set off at 08:20. There will be no 50km race walk this Olympics with a mixed sex relay race walk taking it's place instead - part of the drive for gender equality across the games. Athletics weekly has a preview for the 20km individual races here.
August 1, 20241 yr Just catching up on the racewalking Brian Pinta of Ecaudor wins the men's race with a time of 1:18:54 Yang Jiuya of China wins the women's race with a time of 1:25:54 Next medal event on the track is the 10,000m run at 20:20 tomorrow evening. August 1, 20241 yr Caught a bit of the racewalking this morning - nice to see Ecuador getting a gold, becoming a bit more of a regular occurrence for them now!
August 2, 20241 yr Track events at last - now it feels like an Olympics. So aside from the preliminary 100m women's rounds with all the no-hopers who got universality places a decent morning of watching the athletics. The real fun starts tonight with the women's 5000m heats and the first medal in men's 10000m final.
August 2, 20241 yr My eye candy in the Decathlon (Manual Eitel) had to pull out because of Covid :( Excited for the athletics events though. Love the confidence in Josh Kerr's interview after he won his 1500m heat
August 2, 20241 yr Universality places are an absolute joke. Ridiculous and stupid post. It's the only thing that actually makes this feel like a global event - where else would small countries have the funds to compete? Always good to see some different countries get medals where they can.
August 2, 20241 yr Glad that the Athletics have finally arrived. Sunday in particular looks stacked, real couch potato stuff!
August 2, 20241 yr Not a bad way to start the evening! Wonder if it'll be broken again in the Final (or indeed in the second heat)
August 2, 20241 yr It will probably get broken in the final barring any slip-ups. It's gonna take a mighty effort for anyone to take gold away from USA in that race.
August 2, 20241 yr Halfway through the women's 800m heats - Gemma Reekie and Phoebe Gill safely through to the semis so far!
August 3, 20241 yr That 400m mixed relay was exciting - The Netherlands causing an upset over firm favourites USA there! Femke Bol really has some talent. Nice to see GB get the bronze as well.
August 3, 20241 yr Gold for Julian Alfred in the Women's 100m - the first ever Olympic medal for St Lucia!
August 3, 20241 yr Author What an event for St Lucia to get their first ever Olympic medal, 10.72 on a wet track well done Julian Alfred, Daryll Neita just outside the medals, best performance by a female Brit in 64 years.
August 3, 20241 yr Author Nice for Bol to win that after the unfortunate incident last year . Excellent for GB.
August 3, 20241 yr Author Fraser-Price was not injured, but was refused entry to the stadium by officials and therefore missed the race.
August 3, 20241 yr Fraser-Price was not injured, but was refused entry to the stadium by officials and therefore missed the race. Wasn't she in the warm-up area before her race? Or is that not in the same place as the stadium?
