In lieu of the previous SyncTube sessions' weekly polls cutting each week's songs down to a list of 10 options to vote for because no one volunteered to do the work to make such curated lists, for our Hot 100 #1s marathon I'm just going to post one of these threads each week allowing people to vote for whichever songs they want from the full list x

If you don't know what the above sentence is referring to don't worry, this thread is open to participation from anyone (although we're always open to new participants at our weekly listening sessions x), just post in the thread with up to 5 favourites and, if you want, up to 3 least favourites from the below song list. The song with the most favourite nods will get a play at the start of next week's session (and the song with the most least favourite nods will just have a permanent place on a wall of shame for funziez).

Following Percy Faith's win in the first week, we have another instrumental winner with The Tornados' 'Telstar' topping the poll having been mentioned by 7 out of 9 voters. Just behind on 6 voters in 2nd place was underdog Kyu Sakamoto's 'Ue O Muite Arukō' (even as it attracted Cow to submit a vote for that song alone), and the top 3 was completed by The Beach Boys' 'I Get Around' on 5 votes. The vote for the worst of the week was less of a walkover this week, but ultimately the dishonour goes to Steve Lawrence's 'Go Away Little Girl' with 5 votes out of the 8 who nominated least favourites. Jimmy Soul's 'If You Wanna Be Happy' placed 2nd with 3 votes and there was a tie for 3rd on 2 votes each for The Four Seasons' 'Big Girls Don't Cry' and Dale & Grace's 'I'm Leaving It Up To You'.

Wall of Fame

Week 1 (Aug 1958-Apr 1962): Percy Faith - Theme From "A Summer Place" [7/9]

Week 2 (May 1962-Aug 1964): The Tornados - Telstar [7/9]

Wall of Shame

Week 1 (Aug 1958-Apr 1962): Larry Verne - Mr. Custer [8/9]

Week 2 (May 1962-Aug 1964): Steve Lawrence - Go Away Little Girl [5/8]

This week's selection covers the 116th through 177th #1s, from mid August 1964 (The Supremes' 'Where Did Our Love Go') to mid February 1967 (The Monkees' 'I'm A Believer'). Back to being open for voting for just the one week this time as next week's session should be going ahead as scheduled.

My votes for this week:

Best:

The Animals - The House Of The Rising Sun

Barry McGuire - Eve Of Destruction

The Beatles - Yesterday

The Rolling Stones - Paint It, Black

Simon & Garfunkel - The Sounds Of Silence

Very tough to whittle down to 5 this week, I actually like 'Good Vibrations' more than 'I Get Around' which made my votes last week but couldn't quite squeeze it in! 'Paperback Writer' and 'These Boots Are Made For Walkin'' also narrowly missing out and '96 Tears' was fairly close to making it in as a new discovery.

Worst:

Herman's Hermits - Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter

SSgt Barry Sadler - The Ballad Of The Green Berets

The Sadler thing is an order of magnitude worse than everything else so I considered nominating only that but I will also highlight the Herman's Hermits track for being pretty naff and having rather subpar vocals. (I actually liked the other Herman's Hermits track though as silly as it was). Nothing else stood out as being worse than a bit boring.

5 favourites of the week:

The Animals - The House Of The Rising Sun

The Beatles - Ticket To Ride

Donovan - Sunshine Superman

The Monkees - I'm A Believer

The Rolling Stones - Paint It, Black

3 least favourites of the week:

Bobby Vinton - Mr. Lonely

Herman's Hermits - Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter

SSgt Barry Sadler - The Ballad Of The Green Berets

Very strong week...

Best

The Animals - The House Of The Rising Sun

Barry McGuire - Eve Of Destruction

The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations

The Beatles - Yesterday

The Rolling Stones - Paint It, Black

Incredibly tough, The Sound of Silence, Downtown, My Girl, You Keep Me Hangin' On, Mr Tambourine Man and Sunshine Superman all would've made it most weeks.

Worst

Herman's Hermits - Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter

Johnny Rivers - Poor Side Of Town

SSgt Barry Sadler - The Ballad Of The Green Berets

A pro-Vietnam song was always gonna be an easy pick and Mrs Brown... had dodgy vocals, Johnny Rivers just left very little impression on me but not bad at all.

Best:

Simon & Garfunkel - The Sounds Of Silence

Faves:

The Beatles - Help!

The McCoys - Hang On Sloopy

Nancy Sinatra - These Boots Are Made For Walkin'

The Shangri-Las - Leader Of The Pack

Least Faves:

Tommy James And The Shondells - Hanky Panky

oops did I miss last time's? though it wouldnt have changed the result if I did as telstar and Kyu would both have had votes from me, along with maybe Ray Charles and Beatles.

This list is just insanely stuffed with classic after classic. Picking just 5 is pretty tough!

The Supremes - You Keep Me Hangin' On

The Monkees - Last Train To Clarksville

The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations

The Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'

Four Tops - Reach Out I'll Be There

in the end I had to go with genuine rock classics and one personal fave, but look...No Stones, No Beatles, and I cant give any support to little-known gems like This Diamond Ring, Poor Side Of Town, Lightnin' Strikes, and so much more. I wasn't doing personal charts in this era (obv) but around a third of this list has topped my chart as oldies.

Worst:

Lorne Green, Green berets, and Henry VIII - though Herman's Hermits isnt quite in the same league as the other 2, it has always got on my nerves a bit given that their genuinely great pop singles didn't hit number one and these two ancient music hall songs did. The UK had the good taste not to issue them as singles....

^ I thought I'd better not pester you via PM a second week in a row, glad you have seen it anyway this week though!

I did think you might have tied it for Kyu if you had voted (given it was you who first introduced me to it via BJSC!) but it is a wash if you'd have also voted for 'Telstar' anyway ofc.

No worries :) Rag Doll is the one that has lost out, that would def be one of my top 5, but as no-one else voted for it..... :D
