In lieu of the previous SyncTube sessions' weekly polls cutting each week's songs down to a list of 10 options to vote for because no one volunteered to do the work to make such curated lists, for our Hot 100 #1s marathon I'm just going to post one of these threads each week allowing people to vote for whichever songs they want from the full list x

If you don't know what the above sentence is referring to don't worry, this thread is open to participation from anyone (although we're always open to new participants at our weekly listening sessions x), just post in the thread with up to 5 favourites and, if you want, up to 3 least favourites from the below song list. The song with the most favourite nods will get a play at the start of next week's session (and the song with the most least favourite nods will just have a permanent place on a wall of shame for funziez).

It was another close race for the winner of the last poll but 7 was the magic number again as Simon & Garfunkel's 'The Sounds Of Silence' squeaked the win with 7 votes (out of a new record of 13), just behind in joint 2nd place with 6 votes each were The Animals' 'The House Of The Rising Sun' and The Rolling Stones' 'Paint It, Black'. Over on the worst poll there's also a new record as unsurprisingly the dodgy propaganda of 'The Ballad Of The Green Berets' by SSgt Barry Sadler walked over the field with 9 votes out of 11. Herman's Hermits were the distant runner up with 4 votes for 'Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter' and third place was a tie on 3 votes each for Tommy James And The Shondells' 'Hanky Panky' and Bobby Vinton's 'Mr. Lonely'.

Wall of Fame

Week 1 (Aug 1958-Apr 1962): Percy Faith - Theme From "A Summer Place" [7/9]

Week 2 (May 1962-Aug 1964): The Tornados - Telstar [7/9]

Week 3 (Aug 1964-Feb 1967): Simon & Garfunkel - The Sounds Of Silence [7/13]

Wall of Shame

Week 1 (Aug 1958-Apr 1962): Larry Verne - Mr. Custer [8/9]

Week 2 (May 1962-Aug 1964): Steve Lawrence - Go Away Little Girl [5/8]

Week 3 (Aug 1964-Feb 1967): SSgt Barry Sadler - The Ballad Of The Green Berets [9/11]

This week's selection covers the 178th through 229th #1s, from mid February 1967 (The Buckinghams' 'Kind Of A Drag') to mid February 1970 (Shocking Blue's 'Venus'). Note that double A-Side #1s will have both songs listed separately in these polls, so there are actually 53 songs here (counting 'Come Together' and 'Something' separately). This thread should be open for a week as we'll hopefully be back to regular service with the next session on Sunday 20th.

My votes for this week:

Best:

The Beatles - Hey Jude

Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine

Otis Redding - (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay

Strawberry Alarm Clock - Incense And Peppermints

Zager & Evans - In The Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus)

Hard to whittle down once again, Strawberry Alarm Clock was a fantastic discovery for me so thought I needed to give it a nod x

Worst:

Jeannie C. Riley - Harper Valley P.T.A.

Honestly I don't remember anything sounding particularly bad but iirc this was the one that was the least my thing. (Oop I really should have got this thread up while the songs were fresh in my memory, hope other people can remember ok enough x)

From

until 'Venus' about 27 minutes in if anyone wants a recap (and I won't be here next week so I'll jump a bit ahead too)

Best:

The Doors - Light My Fire

Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine

Shocking Blue - Venus

Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds

Aretha Franklin - Respect

Worst:

The Rascals - People Got To Be Free

Archie Bell & The Drells - Tighten Up

Wall of Shame

:deadbanana:

The Beatles - Penny Lane

The Monkees - Daydream Believer

Zager & Evans - In The Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus)

The Rolling Stones - Ruby Tuesday

Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine

Worst:

The Rascals - People Got To Be Free

Best:

Hey Jude

Sugar, Sugar

Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye

Happy Together

Love Theme From "Romeo & Juliet"

Edited by CowTzy

The Beatles - Something

The Doors - Light My Fire

Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds

The Monkees - Daydream Believer

Otis Redding - (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay

Sugar and Sugar, Happy Together and a fair few more just missing out, limiting it to one for the Beatles.

I can't quite remember a lot of the new songs to me oops, so I'll leave Worst as none stood out as particularly awful songs.

Top 5 this week:

The Beatles - Something

Bobbie Gentry - Ode To Billie Joe

The Doors - Light My Fire

The Lemon Pipers - Green Tambourine

Zager & Evans - In The Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus)

Best

The Beatles - Hey Jude

The Doors - Light My Fire

Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds

Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine

Otis Redding - (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay

Would also vote for 'Everyday People', but it won't win and I couldn't decide which of the above to exclude.

Worst again nothing really stood out, but because I can't really get past the title, I'll say:

John Fred And His Playboy Band - Judy In Disguise (With Glasses)

Best:

Aretha Franklin - Respect

The Beatles - Something

The Jackson 5 - I Want You Back

Otis Redding - (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay

The Turtles - Happy Together

Worst:

The Archies - Sugar, Sugar (potentially controversial but I'm not a fan)

Best:

The Beatles - Something

The Box Tops - The Letter

The Doors - Light My Fire

Otis Redding - (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay

The Rolling Stones - Ruby Tuesday

Worst:

Lulu - To Sir With Love

The Young Radcals - Groovin’

The Buckingham - Kind Of A Drag

Looks like there's a tie at the top, so to save us a potential 8 minute replay with so many bonuses to come later, I'll swap my vote for 'Light My Fire' to 'Everyday People'

Best

Aretha Franklin - Respect

The Beatles - Something

The Doors - Light My Fire

The Monkees - Daydream Believer

Simon & Garfunkel - Mrs. Robinson

Worst

Nothing

OK now we have a 3-way tie

Happy to reinstate my original vote for 'Light My Fire' to give it the win, we can always have the shortened version...

Are we having a session this afternoon? I might actually be free haha

I'm going to leave a longer post in the main thread explaining shortly but unfortunately not going to be able to do today either, sorry :(

I know it's rather last minute but is there anything anyone else wants to do with this timeslot in the room? x

(Or I could still do a session today but just starting a bit later and prepping on the fly which will mean no bonus tracks unforch, I guess we could double up next time?)

I don't mind leaving this till next week. I'm in the middle of Storm Ashley and might lose power at any time. It does seem to have subsided a bit now.

I'm actually meant to be away next weekend (unless I'm still too ill, ironically) oops.

I think I will still do this today actually, probably starting at either 4:30 or 5 and just forgoing the #2 bonuses for now, will post more details in the main thread.

is this happening? I could now but not later :/

Then you would have been missing most of it anyway

(it's still going to be the same timeslot, just starting an hour later)
