November 1, 2024Nov 1 Author I’’m sure I’ve made many mistakes, so please correct me at will! Also, if any anyone can help with pre 2000 sales, feel free :)
November 1, 2024Nov 1 I suppose some of these should be asterisked that they weren’t the actual best seller of the week as is the case with Sailor Song and to be pedantic the title should be 21st century :P
November 1, 2024Nov 1 Changed, not sure how you change the subheading of a thread though? :) Do a full edit on the 1st post (done)
November 1, 2024Nov 1 Author Thanks, Julian! The OP is definitely a work in progress, so anyone please suggest additions or amendments :)
November 5, 2024Nov 5 Author Updated with all the figures I could find from 1980 to date. Any errors, let me know. As far as I can make out, there have been 96 different #1s that have “sold” less than 40,000 in a week - I’m sure we’ll get to 100 very soon.
November 5, 2024Nov 5 Great work Ed! Iron Maiden - Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter in the list for its second week makes me think it was probably the multi-week #1 that came closest to spending all its weeks in the Top 10 at #1 before ACR came in, as it went 1-1-9-32... (Helping Haiti went 1-1-9-26...) Since ACR came in, 'Taste' is the 5th song to have stayed at #1 from release to ACR, the others being 'God's Plan', 'drivers license', 'Bad Habits' and 'Sprinter'. (Slight digression, I know...)
November 6, 2024Nov 6 What on earth was going on when Orson went to #1? :o I remember that week, it was made quite a big deal of. Sales were obviously around their lowest then and I think there was also a lack of competition.
March 1Mar 1 Author So Not Like Us becomes the 99th #1 with a weekly sale of less than 40K - what will be the 100th?

Also around this time both Top of the Pops and Smash Hits gave up, and generally singles felt like a dying market in comparison to a then flourishing album chart.Seeing some of my favourite #1s of all time in the above list is quite sad (Black Parade, Bring Me To Life) but to be honest in that era I was listening to them on music channels most of the time rather than going out and buying the CDs.I’d like to know what on earth was happening in January 2021 for that recent low for Sweet Melody? Given the world situation at the time I assumed people would be streaming more rather than less in absence of anything else to do, or was everyone just too depressed to listen to anything?

March 4Mar 4 I'd say PPC too if it makes it , not shown a boost yet so I'm guessing uts unlikely to get any noticeable boost now

Particularly albums, we've seen albums get to #1 on less than 10,000 copies. For some reason, it also happens the week after the Olympics.
