Quickly proving that she was no one-album wonder, Olivia Rodrigo returned last year with future Halloween playlist staple 'Vampire' to lead which soon became her third UK #1 hit. The song isn't really to my taste but it gets some respect for having an interesting structure actually picking the pace up throughout. A place ahead we have Steve Lacy whose 'Bad Habit' blew up on TikTok shortly after its release assisted by its funk groove and many hooks. Amongst the song's co-writers was perhaps surprisingly Diana 'Wynter' Gordon, outdoing both of her chart hits. The song just about made it past the semis though outperforms quite a few of its fellow semi-finalists.

A few dance staples next; Calvin Harris falls with 'Pray To God', a late single from his 2014 album 'Motion' so it will get one more year afterwards and does mean 'Miracle' will be his highest appearance. Mark Ronson likewise will have one more go at it with the massive decade-defining hit 'Uptown Funk' which curiously hasn't been challenging for the top 40 here again recently. Kungs did manage a top 40 placement last year with summer anthem 'This Girl' but now takes a slide back into a more familiar area of the rundown.

Cardi B's 'WAP' was regarded as quite the novelty at the time with its over the top sexual lyrics and video which majorly assisted it making a run for the top of the UK chart. It appears to have held up rather well with the forum however as this year now marks its first top 100 appearance - still a fun song tbh so can't complain. Her follow-ups throughout the decade haven't fared quite so well and there is still no sign of a second album (and who at this point really desires one).

Ariana Grande rounds out a decade of 'Break Free' by finishing just above average for the song's history. It has always been her more favoured track of 2014 here ('One Last Time' counting for 2015) with her bigger UK hits 'Problem' and 'Bang Bang' not so highly regarded. Harry Styles' debut solo single takes a strong rebound as his fans await the lead to his fourth album release. Ghost hold up fairly well on their second year since TikTok brought 'Mary On A Cross' to most of our attention, good to see this here again as one of the few rock hits of recent.

The Chemical Brothers finally have a strong last hurrah here with 'Go' having been quite the sleeper success on Buzzjack - it cracks the top 100 belatedly on its 9th year and over performing from the first two rounds. The song was their second collab with veteran rapper Q-Tip following the big 2005 anthem 'Galvanize', this one not being quite as great but regardless a very worthy late addition to the rundown. However being their only hit single this side of the 2010s they're unlikely to ever make the list again after next year...

Felt like a nice surprise to see 'Bad Habit' making the final, as ever my memory of previous performance in this is terrible so I'd forgotten it came so close last year - nice result for it here x Also didn't realise it was the first time 'Go' made the final so a great improvement for that! 'vampire' also with a surprisingly low debut, have 2023 songs just done poorly in general or are some of these 2023 hits just not as highly regarded as I'd have thought

Excellent 63-62-61 finale to that section. Happy to see Sign Of The Times back up higher where it belongs - easily my favourite song of his. Very much here for Chemical Brothers cracking the top 100. And Ghost is obviously great.

Thought Vampire might be a bit higher too.

Major Lazer leapt back into the top 40 last year with massive 2015 hit 'Lean On' - they take a hit this year down to #60 though still have done very well to make the final in every year since its release. Likewise, Years & Years have never missed a final appearance with 'King'. The song remains remarkably stable as Olly Alexander's appearance at Eurovision hasn't helped it gain any new fans.

Justin Bieber has been absent from the chart the last couple of years however his massive 2015 hit 'Sorry' gains in support - it has always been the forum favourite of his since its release proving he could make a good pop song when he wants to. As you probably forgot about he did also remix the song at #57, another entry from Billie Eilish which has had a very steady chart run here following its second-year boost, although seems destined to never contend in the same way two of her future efforts have.

Taylor Swift's 'Cruel Summer' has remained a presence on the chart this year and actually registers a climb after last year's initial boost of popularity so it looks as if this one is here to stay for the remainder of the decade. Mark Ronson unfortunately takes a hit with 'Nothing Breaks' down to #55, not doing much better than 'Uptown Funk' this year. Miley of course still has last year's winner 'Midnight Sky' in contention.

HAIM finish out the decade strongly rising to a peak of #54 and overtaking their Calvin Harris collab - the song was a late single from their debut album which still remains their most commercially successful. Living up to its song title, 'Never Really Over' also gains a new peak for Katy Perry, although the song is likely to now be her last hurrah in the contest given the poor critical and commercial performance of future material.

Brat summer assists 'Gone' to a new peak at #52, again the biggest song here for Charli XCX although that could very well change in next year's contest. The song wasn't that big of a commercial success but had a strong forum following from its release and sonically an indicator of things to come from her. Post Malone going all country on us this year assists 'Circles' to belatedly enter the final rundown, starting off strong at just the edge of the halfway mark. The song was a big commercial success and proved he didn't need to stay in hip-hop to get hits.

Just catching up now... my favourite from each section so far:

100-91: Billie Eilish - when the party's over

90-81: Ariana Grande - God is a woman

80-71: Billie Eilish - What Was I Made For?

70-61: Chemical Brothers - Go (feat. Q-Tip)

60-51: Post Malone - Circles

Thrilled that 'Go' and 'Circles' have both fared a lot better this year

Starting out the top 50 we have the breakthrough single from Christine And The Queens, 'Tilted' (or its original French version 'Christine'). This year he retired the CATQ project and now performs as Rahim Redcar so fans may well have missed that a new album came out 2 months ago. It places two spots ahead of Charli XCX collab 'Gone' in the rundown. Clean Bandit likewise fall out of last year's top 40 with 'Symphony' which remains their most popular song here, with 'Rather Be' sadly unable to break out of the semi-finals on its final opportunity.

Meanwhile, four songs enter the upper half of the rundown for the first time. Firstly at #49 Janelle Monáe with the Prince-inspired 'Make Me Feel', which remains her most popular track as a leading performer despite a belated follow-up album to the one this led having been released last year. Carly Rae Jepsen smashed instantly here with her yet-to-appear 2015 hit however it has taken a while longer for one of its follow-ups to make half its impact. 'Cut To The Feeling' however returns to the final rundown following a three year absence at a new peak. She also put out an album last year that had no songs from it nominated.

Little Mix's final UK #1 hit before announcing a hiatus the following year, 'Sweet Melody' also sees a major improvement year-on-year as perhaps their presence is starting to be missed a bit more by the forum. Their future collaborators Galantis are not far ahead with their breakout hit 'Runaway (U & I)', still a bigger dance anthem than anything else they followed it up with. Between them another from Dua Lipa - 'New Rules' continues to hold steady even with two extra songs from her having competed for finalist votes.

Saint Jhn appeared much higher than expected last year with 'Roses' placing 21st. It takes a bit of a backseat down to #43 this year though that is still impressive for a dance remix of a rap song. 'Roses (remix)' has just now crossed the 2 billion mark on Spotify - the 114th title to do so. Grimes has a surge in popularity for 'Kill V. Maim' which lands one place away from joining her other title in the top 40.

Completing its decade run in the top 100, Sia's 'Chandelier' alas places just outside the top 40 again. One of the best written and performed pop songs of the last decade, it deserved a fair bit more for its final outing but at least she did manage one year in the top 10 with it. With more recent efforts having been largely disappointing it may well be the last time we have Sia in the rundown (unless 'Cheap Thrills' picks up in the next two years).

Great to see Kill v Maim almost hitting the Top 40 (though I'd definitely swap it with Flesh Without Blood as her top track personally!)

Impressive consistency for Tilted, I'd like to see it consistently 10 or 20 places higher ideally.

Totally agree with DanG about Chandelier. While it's never quite made the very top section of my votes, it's undeniably brilliant and for it to have just the one year scraping into the top 10 feels like we've undervalued it a bit on here.

I'm also excited about how many of my favourites haven't appeared yet...
As one of my nominations when I first did them 4 years ago and hadn't been included the year before, I'm pleased to see 'Go' as high as #62 - my other highlight of those revealed is 'If I Could Change Your Mind' ending on a high to bid farewell to HAIM's debut era. Lots of great stuff still to come that's either new or hasn't been this high before!

Commencing the top 40 proceedings we have a rare instance of a song on its last leg randomly doing much better than ever before. This indeed marks the first ever appearance in the RotD final altogether for electronica/alt-pop musician FKA Twigs - 'Two Weeks' was her breakthrough single, whilst not a chart smash it was a big hit with critics and gained support with Radio 1. The song recently also passed the 100m mark on Spotify. Her recent release 'Eusexua' also proved popular with forum users so that could perhaps keep her going into next year but for now this song bows out at a strong peak.

Another two big sleeper hits with Buzzjack next, first at #39 Wolf Alice with their biggest streaming hit 'Don't Delete The Kisses' now joins their more recent release 'The Last Man On Earth' in the top 40. Aussie musician Tame Impala also climbs into the top 40 for the first time at #37 with 'Let It Happen' - the lengthiest track from his 'Currents' album however the definite forum favourite.

In between them, Grimes appears back in the top 40 after a two-year absence with 'Flesh Without Blood', scoring only eight points more than her other title which is the smallest gap between them yet. This was actually the smaller hit of the two on streaming but has always been more popular on the forum. Another indie-leaning track returning to the top 40 from The xx gains a new peak at #34 - 'On Hold' was the lead taken from their most recent album... in 2016 as their hiatus to focus on solo projects remains ongoing.

Two big climbers from the year 2022: Caroline Polachek has never set foot in the UK chart but her brand of pop has been a hit with critics and found a sizeable forum base - 'Welcome To My Island' led her most recent album and was also assisted by a remix from Charli xcx (Caroline returned the favour on the 'Brat' remix album). Meanwhile the year's biggest hit 'As It Was' gives Harry Styles a first top 40 appearance in the rundown, perhaps expected given his other entry also saw a huge boost this year.

It is the final year for Lilly Wood and the Prick who just about remain in the top 40 for a second time, a good place to exit with 'Prayer In C' (though as great as this is it ought to have been 'Waves' in its position). Ariana sees a nice rebound for 'One Last Time' which will get... one last time to compete next year. It placed first in the 2015 round but is now outdone by three other titles of the year. Meanwhile it is a good year 4 Olivia Rodrigo with 'Good 4 U' rebounding and set for a fairly consistent decade run here.

A lot of gooduns in that section, the highlights for me being belated proper recognition for the brilliant Two Weeks, and a new peak for Wolf Alice's second best song in this top 100 😝

2023 proved to be a great year for new arrivals as we have five of them in the top 30, four of which feature in this section. First up at #30 we have Kylie Minogue whose 'Padam Padam' (named after the sound of the heartbeat) had a viral moment and ended up becoming her biggest hit since 2010's 'All The Lovers'. The song was written by Ina Wroldsen and Lostboy, the latter also made the catchy dance beat that assisted the song to win the Grammy for best dance-pop song of the year.

Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding teamed up for a third occasion with 'Miracle' which proved to be their most loved collaboration with the UK public where the song spent 8 weeks at #1 - it also quickly became a big forum favourite. The song took heavy inspiration from classic 90s trance and euro dance which was a style many of us were keen to see have a revival, and Ellie was a perfect fit vocally. It has an impressive entry position here at #29 well above Calvin's other effort in the rundown.

The other massive dance hit of the year lands one place above - South Korean DJ Peggy Gou broke through in the dance community in the late 2010s with 'It Makes You Forget' and 'Starry Night' but saw an unlikely instant mainstream crossover smash with 'Nanana'. Assisted by pre-release viral hype it became the biggest dance hit of that summer. The song's success was much welcomed with the forum, again owing to its 90s euro dance influence and overall catchiness - and like the two songs that come before it in the rundown its high placement is not much of a surprise.

Eurovision had a big year in 2023, with the annual contest being hosted in the UK for the first time in a while there was always going to be more interest however what was perhaps not anticipated was the sheer popularity of the eventual top two finalists. Following up what was perhaps the most hyped song in the contest's history on Buzzjack 'Euphoria' was no easy task for Loreen however 'Tattoo' ended up giving her a second contest victory and UK chart smash. She now debuts at #23 here not long after her former hit's decade ran its course though you've probably now noticed a particular song has yet to makes its appearance...

Also entering the rundown for the first time, although it nearly made an appearance last year, we have David Guetta with his re-imagining of the Eiffel 65 classic euro dance hit 'Blue' - assisted by updated lyrics from Bebe Rexha. The song was first written in 2017 however it got shelved until the demo version picked up further vitality on social media, ending up being Guetta's biggest hit for many years once officially released. Another great addition to the upper regions of the rundown for me, although I'm sure there are as many here who think it's a fair bit too high as it proved to have a fairly mixed reception at the time across the forum and internet generally.

Meanwhile we now say goodbye to Katy B, whose 'Crying For No Reason' departs from its peak position however it does impressively complete the whole decade within the top 40. The song was her last hit single as a lead performer and by some distance her most popular on the forum so it's unlikely she will be coming back to this rundown in the future.

Hozier remains stable with 'Take Me To Church', and perhaps he could have a second entry next year with 'Too Sweet' which got him a belated second major hit. Dua Lipa gains big with 'Be The One', which is her fourth highest entry. Despite 'Wildest Dreams' bizarrely having a huge drop, Taylor Swift's other 2015 hit 'Style' keeps stable. Lorde is also here with 'Green Light' dropping back down to #22 to make way for Rita Ora to overtake as having the highest-ranking 2017 hit.

I am so on board with Cha Cha Cha and Doomscroller getting into the top 20 when I had no expectations for either to even be in the final. Solid top 20 on the whole, can't think of anything that doesn't deserve to be there between huge pop hitters and a few alt faves.

Incredible climbs for 'Two Weeks' and 'Welcome To My Island', I hope the latter can maintain a bit of a run now, really great track.

Aww, 31-40 would've made a great top 10, still very good placings for a lot of those in seemingly a more alt-friendly year, I will miss Prayer in C from these, it's that rare very profound dance track.

Really expected all 3 of those 2023 entrants to be in the top 20, shocked to see Miracle in particular below the likes of I'm Good (Blue). I personally prefer the latter but wouldn't have thought Buzzjack would've voted the same!

Good on Kaarija for outlasting the other 2023 songs though, it certainly stands out in a pack of 100 more than Tattoo, even though I minorly prefer Loreen's song. A welcome dose on non-English to the top positions.

Rooting for Dua to finally do it this year, feel like this COULD be the year finally.

A strong 21-30 but perhaps more to the point I am *buzzing* that Metric, Cha Cha Cha and Last Man On Earth have all made the top 20!

Of the group just to have gone, I really enjoyed Padam Padam and Miracle from artists I'm not usually that into. Happy to see them this high although, given the usual tastes on this forum, perhaps surprised they're not a little higher still. Tattoo also excellent and deserves to be top 25. The jump for I'm Good Blue is an egregious outlier for me in an otherwise very strong section!
