But why would George's passing eight years ago be having a significant impact now?

Think Hadji means that George's passing in 2016 pushed the song further into the public consciousness and made more people remember it from there on out. No idea if that's actually the case

Pretty sure Last Christmas was huge before 2017 as well!

If something I think it was that campaign one year after his death, the campaign to get Last Xmas to #1, that relly helped and put it on people's conciousness rather than GM's death per se

I still remember how little chart effect GM's death had, like almost zero effect, people didn't seem to care at all

it's not like his entire catalog charted at one like with Jacko or even One Direct the other day

It being Christmas will have had some impact on that I’d have thought, people are typically ingrained in their annual routines and I’d have thought it much less likely that they would stop to listen to George Michael songs. Not sure if anyone else from the music industry has ever died at Christmas to compare it to.

I thought it was pretty obvious that George Michael's death is what pushed Last Christmas to biggest Christmas song. It got a big boost after he passed and now it's many years later we can say it seems to be a permanent boost. If he was still alive Mariah would still be the top song for sure.

I think George's passing was probably the start of its general upward trend, but my point was that I find it hard to believe it's the main driving force behind it doing similar to / better than Mariah eight years on. Would it have overtaken if George were still alive? Who knows, it's impossible to say, but we do know the popularity of Christmas songs can change over time and Last Christmas was always among the top few regardless, so it's not outside the realms of possibility.

George's death may have been one of many factors that pushed 'Last Christmas' further into the consciousness of some who hadn't really appreciated it before, even though it had a strong presence long before that.

 

Whether or not it would have eventually overtaken Mariah in the longer term regardless is questionable. However we've seen elsewhere that a short-term publicity can have a lasting impact, for example Sia's 'Snowman' which didn't chart even on SCR until it had a TikTok boost in 2020, but has made the Top 40 every year since.

Last Christmas has pretty much always been a popular Christmas song since 1984, it hasn’t suddenly become popular just because George Michael died in 2016. Plus it’s only really in the past couple of years that Last Christmas has been the bigger of the two throughout the run up to Christmas, it’s a stretch to pin that on something that happened about 6 years earlier. Things like placings on playlists are much more likely to influence.

 

Also, 2017 is roughly the time when Christmas songs started to take over more and more - the whole December chart landscape was shifting in the years immediately following GM’s passing, not just the trajectory of one song.
