Worth reminding that the Mariah vinyls aren't chart eligible.

I wouldn't be putting money on Band Aid myself, considering the last one ran out of steam before Christmas. I suppose we were in a downloads dominant time then, but people will really need to like the new version to stream it ahead of the other festive faves, I'd have thought.

Band Aid 40 will keep everyone else off. Mark my words. Will be huge.
Mariah....for the 30th anniversary of the song.

Or Wham... for the 40th anniversary of their song. :P

The big questions: will Mariah and Wham! physical counts get reset, and therefore be chart eligible? Will various versions of Band Aid be combined for chart purposes?

Does anyone have any recollection how these issues have been handled in the past?

Band Aid is not combined and Mariah and Wham! definitely will not get reset.

Was 30 not released on like a ridiculously early date 13/11 or something back then?

I’ve just seen an article where Ed Sheeran said he was not asked permission for the use of his voice on the new Band Aid 40 and had he been asked he would have “respectfully” declined because his understanding of the narrative associated has changed. Explained to him by Fuse ODG as he says it perpetuates damaging stereotypes stifling Africa’s economy tourism and investment.

I’m in two minds on this. I completely understand that opinion and also how especially now the look of rich singers boosting their own profiles at the expense of lives is not a good look. But then isn’t it a bit refusing help when it’s most needed? It just feels wrong to turn our backs on a developing part of the world while we live in luxury just incase we offend them? Or in the hope we might fancy a holiday there?

Well the maxi CD and 12" vinyl have too many tracks. The other CD and 7" look OK on that basis.

It’s a long known thing that it’s generally frowned upon in Africa and by Africans so it seems more a pat yourself on the back thing for Geldoff and do-gooders than actually doing long term good. I’m not aware of the details but very rarely do you see Africans or descendants hyping this stuff up. It’s usually pretty privileged musicians. The U2’s etc

Yeah, and it did rise back up to number 3 for Christmas week.

I do think it'll do well for a week or two but I don't see people enthusiastically downloading it in Christmas week, just in order to get it to the Christmas #1 if it's already been out for a few weeks, and potentially already slipped down.

The big unknown of course is how well playlisted it will be, and whether people consider the new version worth listening to.

Yeah it's the white saviour thing, some of the lyrics being questionable and the portrayal of an entire continent as helpless. I get the dilemma for Ed.

Why are Mariah’s vinyls not chart eligible?

The 12" has too many tracks. 7" is probably OK.

If Band Aid gets the number one, does that count as a 4th separate number one? If so, all for it as I’d love someone to close in on the (undeserved) Lad Baby total

the 7" is totally ok, same as the regular CD single for Mariah. One of the 12" also has 3 tracks so also ok. It's the other 12" that has 6 track that is not ok, same as the other CD single.

all Wham variants (I think I count 5) are ok too

the Band Aid 40 single has 5 tracks but I guess it counts as remixes of the same song, not different songs, so ok too

Only 3 variants can count towards chart position though

They’d be separate acts technically I think.

The potential problem is that they’ve already had their limit of 3 variants in the past 5 years.

Will they be allowed to discount the previous variants and instead include the new variants?

I asked this and someone appeared to answer but it was ambiguous as to whether they understood my question or thought I was talking about SCR/ACR.

I would assume that the three biggest selling variants in any given week are the three that are included.
