November 18, 2024Nov 18 Yeah, it doesn't have to be the same 3 formats forever, otherwise reissues would never have worked. I think the label can choose which ones count as well.
November 19, 2024Nov 19 Yeah, it doesn't have to be the same 3 formats forever, otherwise reissues would never have worked. I think the label can choose which ones count as well. I’ve found the rule now: The first 3 formats released will be included unless elected by the record company prior to release. Again, as always, a little ambiguity as it doesn’t say whether it means prior to the initial release, or prior to the release of that specific physical format. I assume, with the wiggle room there, that they will be included.
November 19, 2024Nov 19 An interesting case for both Mariah and Wham!, having too many new formats: Mariah Carey: - CD (3 tracks) - CD (6 tracks) [ineligible] - 7" Vinyl (2 tracks) - 12" Vinyl (3 tracks) - 12" Vinyl (7 tracks) [ineligible] - Cassette (2 tracks) [ineligible, not because of track listing but because of too many formats? Assuming the CD, 7" and 12" would take precedence over a cassette] Wham!: - CD - 12" Black Vinyl - 12" White Vinyl - 12" Zoetrope Picture Disc Vinyl - 12" Picture Disc Vinyl (HMV Exclusive) (Presumably the 2023 released CD and 7" will become ineligible, and this year it'll be the new CD + two of the 12"s) So it's ultimately a mix of the labels wanting chart sales, while acknowledging that some formats won't count towards the charts but will nevertheless be money makers.
November 19, 2024Nov 19 the prices of some of those vinyls are super expensive $$$$ so they're in for the money rather than chart position it's like George Michael's label re-releasing Careless whisper the other week and charging 25 pounds for the 12"
November 19, 2024Nov 19 Band Aid should release a physical variant for each artist on Band Aid 40, likely the only way they'll get anywhere near #1.
November 19, 2024Nov 19 I don't think anyone is really excited/here for Band Aid 40. If they had a new generation of artists then maybe but just merging the 3 versions (2 of which no one really cares about) isn't too exciting. I don't even think people cared much for Band Aid 30... didn't that just come and go in a heartbeat?
November 20, 2024Nov 20 Band Aid have no chance because it's not a new song so people won't be interested.
November 20, 2024Nov 20 Plus it's only been 2 years since the Ladbaby version so there's even more overkill than if it had just been the standard 10 year wait.
November 20, 2024Nov 20 Buying the same songs physically over and over again (effectively a death spiral ouroboros) is v on brand for late stage Capitalism. Minimal effort, zero innovation, unending sequels and reboots to celebrate increasingly gratuitous anniversaries.. maybe we're not heading towards an AI induced paperclip apocalypse after all, but one with Wham! picture discs and Mariah Carey cassettes. The irony being of course that lyrically the theme of All I Want For Christmas Is You is distinctly anti-consumerist.
November 20, 2024Nov 20 Band Aid should release a physical variant for each artist on Band Aid 40, likely the only way they'll get anywhere near #1. But they wouldn't all be eligible

November 20, 2024Nov 20 But they wouldn't all be eligible If Taylor can release all those vinyl versions of Midnights to make a clock, I don't see why cds with different covers wouldn't count. Not sure who would want to buy all of them though :D
November 20, 2024Nov 20 If Taylor can release all those vinyl versions of Midnights to make a clock, I don't see why cds with different covers wouldn't count. Not sure who would want to buy all of them though :D Because there are different rules for the singles start and the albums chart. Singles have a maximum of three physical formats. I don’t think there is a limit for albums.
November 21, 2024Nov 21 What I would say if you’re going to bet wham probably the next 24 hours is your last chance to get half decent odds
November 22, 2024Nov 22 Band Aid 40 still the favourite but not odds-on any more (5/4 Bet365 this morning). There will be big curiosity interest in it, it will be heavily featured on news programmes and across plenty of radio, and I reckon there’s a very good chance it will go to number 1 on initial release but I can’t see it holding momentum right through December. Wham 12/5 and Mariah 5/1 right now. I think you might still get some better odds on Wham/Mariah if Band Aid 40 does hit number 1 at the start of December. If you fancy a long odds small flutter how about Brenda Lee currently 100/1 on Bet 365. She did get a US Billboard Number 1 last year and with Spotify playlists being more and more US-dominated this year she will very likely be high in the UK chart again this year. Still very unlikely to be Xmas number one, but there could be cash out profits to be made by taking 100/1 now (subject to the bookmakers offering cash out on this market, pretty sure Bet 365 and Skybet did last year)
