I reckon it will be a b-side to FUFN on physical formats like MC was to Fantasy.

I do like this... enough to have listened several times this morning... but I do feel that it's structure is so similar to Angel that it wouldn't have been the best choice as a second single.

 

It feels a little bit like Angel was a hit and then when Fantasy wasn't that they have gone for almost a safe option (SAFE? How can such an out-there song be described as SAFE?) by releasing something that is reminiscent of the hit debut.

 

It deserves to be a hit - even though it's only a promo single - but Fantasy deserved to do so much better as well.

 

I hope this doesn't end up being just a one-week thing... especially as the reaction to it as largely been so positive.

I saw a Tik Toker (Sam Murphy) describe her singles as the 3 levels of a club and I love that analogy

 

'Fantasy' is on the 2nd level with the disco stuff

'Angel Of My Dreams' is on the ground level with the commercial smashes

'IT girl' is in the basement (with 'Midnight Cowboy' which is in the basement but near the end of the night)

 

I NEED to hear them in a cluuuuub :(

I don’t think they have released this because Fantasy underperformed compared to Angel. IT girl has been teased for months and insiders / fans knew IT girl (called That’s Showbiz Baby at the time) was always a promo single and FUFN was the single.

does anyone remember where/if midnight cowboy entered on apple music? maybe not a super fair comparison since IT girl is definitely getting more of a push at least on social media but since they're both promo singles those are probably the metrics we should be comparing it to?

 

edit; i also just bought both versions and the music video on iTunes US, which with the way iTunes is these days means it should go top 10 any minute :cheer:

It’s also 157 on the Apple Music pop charts which seems… very good considering it’s a promo track with no playlisting?

I don’t know if playlists on there influence the charts as much as they do on Spotify but i’m surprised it’s even charting on there at all

It’s track 17 on the main New Music Friday playlist on Spotify with over 4m saves. I’m assuming that’s the main one in the US? :cheeseblock:
