January 8Jan 8 I’m worried that Chappell is going to win it - I’d love to see Ezra Collective come top 2!
January 8Jan 8 Assuming that Chappell was added to the list to give it extra stardust but they know deep down that her winning would go against the original spirit of it... then I think she'll be #2 and someone lesser known will win. Miles Smith being #4 has already devalued the entire exercise for me based on the dirges I've heard from him so far 😅
January 8Jan 8 My guess is Ezra Collective and Mk.Gee for the top 2 I don't expect Chappell Roan will make it given how well known she is already
January 9Jan 9 Miles Smith being #4 has already devalued the entire exercise for me based on the dirges I've heard from him so far 😅 Myles Smith might not be for everyone but dirge certainly isn't a word I'd use to describe his songs lol
January 9Jan 9 Hoping Doechii or Mk.Gee for number one. They had two of my favourite albums of last year
January 9Jan 9 Pretty sure R1 will want to be attached to the ‘breakthrough’ of Doechii, so will be surprised if she’s not #1 at this point.
January 10Jan 10 So Chappell Roan came 1st then :/ She shouldn’t have even been on the list so I can’t believe she’s actually won it.
January 10Jan 10 Chappell has had so much deserved support throughout 2024 it really does seem pointless giving her this award instead of bands that are rising but not as well known where Radio 1 A Listing throughout 2025 would be amazing for their profile!
January 10Jan 10 To be honest, they are correct. Chappell Roan deserves to be the sound of 2024, 2025, 2026, 2027, and every year for eternity, based on only 'The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess' and 'Good Luck, Babe!'! 😂 Well done, Chappell! In all seriousness, not many saw her coming in 2023 for sound of 2024, so I'm kinda glad they're giving Chappell her flowers. I don't think being Sound Of is particularly influential these days, and the other longlisted artists will still be supported, I'm sure!
January 10Jan 10 The whole list this year was so farcical that I can't really bring myself to care about it at all (there are like 1 or 2 artists at a push on the whole list that don't feel like they're already too well established to be on it) but LOL at them actually giving it to Chappell. I guess in future years they can add her name to the list of big stars who've won it before and conveniently not mention the part where she won the list after already being one of the most commercially and critically successful artists around
January 10Jan 10 Author Pink Pony Club is now on the playlist + Tune of the Weekend to celebrate I assume :kink:
January 10Jan 10 Well that's just silly (the award) - album and single in the top 10 selling last year plus another top 40 and other hits too - seems to indicate how far behind the curve Radio 1 have become these days.
January 10Jan 10 I get the negative talk about Chappell winning this, but in fairness her sheer explosion (after Olivia and Presidents Ball) was incredible, and I don't think Radio 1 could be accused of not having their finger on the pulse with that. Her album did nothing in 2023 and H2G, PPC and RWS all soared on their own right off the back of GLB. The way acts break through has also changed from the early days of Sound Of... and she does fit the criteria. All on this list have had a great career already, some more than others, so I think Chappell does deserve recognition.
