Posted November 24, 2024Nov 24 In lieu of the previous SyncTube sessions' weekly polls cutting each week's songs down to a list of 10 options to vote for because no one volunteered to do the work to make such curated lists, for our Hot 100 #1s marathon I'm just going to post one of these threads each week allowing people to vote for whichever songs they want from the full list x If you don't know what the above sentence is referring to don't worry, this thread is open to participation from anyone (although we're always open to new participants at our weekly listening sessions x), just post in the thread with up to 5 favourites and, if you want, up to 3 least favourites from the below song list. The song with the most favourite nods will get a play at the start of next week's session (and the song with the most least favourite nods will just have a permanent place on a wall of shame for funziez). With minutes to go before this week's session kicked off it appeared KC And The Sunshine Band's 'That's The Way (I Like It)' would be taking the customary win by one vote, but the final set of votes from Popchartfreak tied it up as Van McCoy & The Soul City Symphony's 'The Hustle' joined it on 8 votes. Such drama! With nothing separating them it was down to a tense tiebreak vote on SyncTube which proved anticlimactic as active attendees unanimously picked Van & co. as the winners of the week. The podium was rounded out by Carl Douglas' 'Kung Fu Fighting' a little way back on 5 votes. While it was again a record matching 13 voters for the best list, only 8 people nominated any songs for the worst list (it was a tough week to pick something that stuck out as especially bad), but there was just about a clear leader there as Silver Convention's somewhat anaemic disco track 'Fly, Robin, Fly' got 3 votes, ahead of a three way tie for second place on 2 votes each for The Doobie Brothers' 'Black Water', The Staple Singers' 'Let's Do It Again' and Barry Manilow's 'Mandy' (2 of those 3 also received a vote for best of the week while KC And The Sunshine Band also got a vote for worst!) Worst: ABBA - Dancing Queen The Manhattans - Kiss And Say Goodbye Rod Stewart - Tonight's The Night (Gonna Be Alright) I have to be contrarian re ABBA, never liked it one bit and I've had to suffer hearing it way, way too many times. I'm sure it'll probably be contending to win the best poll anyway. (I neeeearly put Barbra Streisand there over it, the other two are definitely worse with Rod being the biggest stinker of the week, but I stick by my guns x)
November 25, 2024Nov 25 Yes you're correct Bre, some Best votes for Dancing Queen - it is overplayed, but it's still one of the most-popular records of all-time and I have loved it from the moment I first heard it and it was clear ABBA had just upped their already-classy game. Sorry not sorry  BEST: ABBA - Dancing Queen (I will be going to ABBA Voyage for the 3rd time next year) Diana Ross - Love Hangover (at a club earlier this year, and this came on, I went wild arms flailing everywhere, it's a track one lives moment by moment rather than listens to :teresa: ) The Four Seasons - December '63 (a highlight of Jersey Boys, and a fabulous late career chart-topper in the UK) The last spots could be taken by any of a dozen personal chart number ones, but these 2 scrape it: Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Blinded By The Light Starland Vocal Band - Afternoon Delight yes it's cheese, but it's glorious cheese, see Anchorman, Simpsons, South Park. WORST: votes for Disco Duck should be disallowed... :teresa:  Barry Manilow - Looks Like We Made It I might have voted for a handful of dull tracks but they arent bad as such. I saw Leo Sayer in concert a few years back and he was fabulous, energetic, fun, and unexpectedly had a great band with him tackling all with gusto. So I forgive him for the big ballad, which in my mind has always been spelt "When I Kneed You". Still brings a smile up.

November 25, 2024Nov 25 Best ABBA - Dancing Queen The Bellamy Brothers - Let Your Love Flow Bill Conti - Gonna Fly Now Eagles - Hotel California Walter Murphy & The Big Apple Band - A Fifth Of Beethoven Manfred Mann very close too, a great discovery x Worst The Manhattans - Kiss And Say Goodbye Rod Stewart - Tonight's The Night (Gonna Be Alright) The Sylvers - Boogie Fever Rod's song is painful and the other two probably sounded alright at the time but should definitely be left in the 70s.
