Posted November 28, 2024Nov 28 Teaser trailer for Boyzone's forthcoming Sky One documentary entitled "No Matter What" (after their biggest hit of course) has been released today: The year is 1993. The UK and Ireland are swept up in electrifying boy band mania. Across Dublin’s clubs, bars and schools, a feverish hunt begins, to find the next musical sensation. In the era before tv talent shows ruled, hundreds vied for stardom, but only five working-class Dubliners would have the luck to be plucked from obscurity and be thrust into the global spotlight. It’s here, we begin our story. For the first time in 30 years, band members Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch and Michael Graham grant rare and exclusive interview access for this three-part Sky documentary series Boyzone (w/t). Revealing their personal experiences in a band that sold over 25 million records worldwide, the boys also talk candidly about how they grappled with the true cost of global fame. And to try and help close a chapter in their lives, they confront the strained relationships and tragic events that have had a lasting impact on all their lives, families and friendships. The Sky Original series, produced by Curious Films, includes contributions from the late Stephen Gately’s sister, Michelle, his former-partner and pop star Eloy De Jong and their estranged manager Louis Walsh, as well as never-been-seen archive footage from the group’s early career. With raw and candid honesty, the documentary examines the key events that shaped Boyzone, including the highs and lows of global stardom, the intense tabloid intrusion in 90’s Britain forcing Stephen Gately to come out, and after a sensational comeback in 2007, a devastating tragedy struck the band, as Stephen died — a loss the remaining band members have never fully overcome. Hayley Reynolds, Acting Director of Documentaries and Factual at Sky, said: “Boyzone’s music has touched millions over the last thirty years, and Sky is thrilled to be bringing this exclusive new series to our customers in the UK and Ireland. Curious Films’ pedigree for sophisticated and intelligent storytelling, as well as deep, privileged access to both the band and Louis Walsh, promises to get under the skin of their extraordinary story with an unrivalled level of insight.” Dov Freedman, Executive Producer and CEO of Curious Films said: “We couldn’t be prouder that Ronan, Keith, Shane and Mikey have allowed us to definitively tell their story after almost 30 years in Curious’ debut commission for Sky. I think the candid interviews from all the key players in the Boyzone story really sets this series apart as something very special." Boyzone (w/t) is a Curious Films production.
November 29, 2024Nov 29 I know they did the whole final tour thing and said they wouldn't do it again but I cant help but think there will be reunion in the next year or so. Edited November 29, 2024Nov 29 by darrens94
November 29, 2024Nov 29 I know they did the whole final tour thing and said they wouldn't do it again but I cant help but think there will be reunion in the next year or so.I think it's complex because they may feel (as Ronan said back in 2018) that the band doesn't really work without Stephen.
November 29, 2024Nov 29 Author I was gonna say I doubt very highly given Ronan's feelings on the matter that he's been quite vocal about in recent years, I don't get a feeling like they'd do anything again. That said, this year is now 30 years - to this very week in fact - since "Love Me For A Reason" came out and next year is the 30th anniversary of "Said & Done", their first album, so who knows? After how he came across in the Boybands Forever documentary, I'm fully anticipating Louis Walsh to be a bit of a wazzock again, but then that's not unexpected.
December 1, 2024Dec 1 I think it's complex because they may feel (as Ronan said back in 2018) that the band doesn't really work without Stephen. I don’t think new music but a money grab tour I can definitely see happening in the future.
February 1Feb 1 Author Starting tomorrow night at 9pm on Sky Documentaries and available for streaming on Now TV. Their singles back catalogue is also now being added to DSPs - "Love Me For A Reason" went up first yesterday: Edited March 3Mar 3 by ThePensmith
February 3Feb 3 This is a great watch! I'm pretty sure their last show in 2019 had more of an ending than they say it did on this. I remember their kids being on stage with them.
February 3Feb 3 Binged it all on Sunday, absolutely fantastic documentary and very in-line with the Boybands Forever one. Never been a Boyzone fan but having understood their story, I have a lot of respect for them. Ronan’s regret at not reuniting sooner before Stephen’s death really made me emotional. Louis is an evil twat.
February 8Feb 8 Hilarious seeing them now, the guy with the beard looks like a real middle aged Irishman 🤣
February 8Feb 8 I was left wondering if there was more to what happened between the band in 2019 and was surprised that 'No Matter What' didn't really feature, but overall a fascinating watch. I really felt for Stephen being backed into a corner about his sexuality and the lack of empathy shown even now by the press was unsurprising but disheartening all the same. The documentary wasn't really Louis Walsh's finest hour, wild that he went as far as fabricating the story about the boys being in a plane crash and didn't seem to care about letting their families know. The third episode surrounding Stephen's passing was a moving watch.
February 8Feb 8 This was a great watch, much like the BBC documentary, not all of it's surprising but it's interesting to hear nonetheless. I never knew what happened to Mikey Graham and really feel for him, I sense he's still working through a lot of the issues being discussed. Not sure if they purposefully gave Louis a pantomime villain edit, but he came across as rather foul. I wouldn't be surprised if it was him that leaked the Gately story and he's got protection.
February 11Feb 11 Well I've watched all three episodes of this over the last 24 hours and it's been quite a somber watch from the main band that was active at the time I started to really get into the charts, them and Backstreet Boys that is. However, Boyzone's story was very moving and also sad too, reminding me of elements of Take That's story as well as the press stunts done to the group Five that was documented in the other Boybands Forever series. I wouldn't care for a reunion or even new music now so it's best to leave the story in the past I feel. I've really got the bug for more documentaries like this, and Spice Girls needs to happen next!
February 12Feb 12 Louis Walsh is total scum, always has been. I hope this leads to a long-awaited spectacular downfall for him.
February 12Feb 12 I'm here for a Louis Walsh downfall. With all the stuff coming out (reminds me of Max Clifford for some reason), I hope it further shines a light on the manipulation that can happen. I will always be furious at him for screwing certain acts over on X Factor (Maria Lawson and Lucie Jones being the main two)
February 12Feb 12 I will always be furious at him for screwing certain acts over on X Factor (Maria Lawson and Lucie Jones being the main two)What did he do to Lucie Jones? He didn't mentor her and one of his acts was in the sing-off with her.
February 12Feb 12 Simon Cowell was the one who screwed over Lucie (by choosing to save Jedward over her) but he definitely screwed over Maria Lawson by voting to save the Conway Sisters which as Sharon put was based purely on his passport.
February 12Feb 12 With regards to Louis, I'm not sure there is a downfall he can experience. He barely does any telly these days anyway and you don't hear of him that much unless something boyband related is in the media. He's never really struck me as one to care particularly how he comes across.
February 12Feb 12 Agreed^ and he was the only judge I think who didn't address the historical controversies of X Factor during the BLM movement in 2020 and probably just shrugged it all off.
February 12Feb 12 What did he do to Lucie Jones? He didn't mentor her and one of his acts was in the sing-off with her. Oh, I mis-remembered that!
