'NIGHTS LIKE THIS' another fantastic tune from The Kid LAROI. This was the frustrating moments of the year for me this not continuing to climber than #28, really wanted this to be an bigger hit although the longevity this had sort of made up for it.

4 Marcus & Martinus - Unforgettable | 1-1-2-4-5-10-17-25-23-15-3-4-16-13-15-18-20-22-26-28-32-33-38-x-39-...

 

For a while I was hoping to see Norwegian twins Marcus & Martinus at Eurovision. I was first made aware of them back in 2016 with one of their most popular hits, Elektrisk. Though that was in Norwegian, all subsequent hits in my chart have been in English, though their collection of hits seemed to dry up by the end of the 2010s. The unusual move of the twins entering Sweden's selection contest Melodifestivalen was like a new lease of life, for their career as much as their fortunes in my chart. 2023 entry Air had given them a runner-up in the contest, as well as in my EOY last year, and was their first chart-topper seven years after Elektrisk. A Melfest runner-up to Loreen's Tattoo is nothing to be sniffed at, but the twins still had their eyes set on Eurovision, and their career relaunch in Sweden continued into 2024.

 

Marcus & Martinus were confirmed for the 2024 line-up of Melodifestivalen at the end of 2023, and I was immediately excited. After how good Air was, I knew they'd be bringing their A game, and that they stood a strong chance of winning, too. They opened the final heat and qualified directly to the final, where they won both the jury vote and the televote, meaning they were finally off to Eurovision! The track also debuted at #1 in my chart and became their first multi-week chart-topper. The track returned to my top 10 when Eurovision happened two months later, in which it placed ninth in the final after a fantastic performance. Though I prefer Air, Unforgettable is still a brilliant song and I love the dark electro-pop style, it suits them very much! The choreography elevates the track further, it was extremely well staged to the point where it didn't feel like a competition on that front in Melfest. The boys have already scored a third #1 in my current chart with Wonder, and I'm seeing them live for the very first time in March, so 2025 is looking to be another great year for Marcus & Martinus!

With four previous EOY top 10 hits, Benson Boone's already made quite a name for himself in my chart. This year sees his tally rise to six, more than anyone except The Kid LAROI. It's pretty remarkable for someone who only truly broke through in 2024, but there's a lot more on that breakthrough track to come, of course. The follow-up to Beautiful Things was a significant moment, and Benson had been teasing Slow It Down before Beautiful Things even came out. Chart fans will know, though, that one viral hit doesn't often lead to further hits, and Benson could easily have faded back into chart obscurity just the way he did after In the Stars was a top 40 hit in 2022. Thankfully, Slow It Down proved its worth.

 

Benson's vocals are on top form throughout this track. They begin tender and delicate over the top of the piano instrumental, and as the tempo increases in verse 1, as does the intensity of Benson's voice, perfectly using his range to highlight the light and shade of the track. The production plays a big part too, and the song builds to an explosive final chorus. Benson leans into the song's title often, not afraid to play with the tempo of the track throughout, and it shows Benson honing a grander sound than the one he'd made his debut with (2021's tender piano ballad Ghost Town), perfectly displaying the sound Benson delivered on debut album Fireworks & Rollerblades.

 

In its second week, Slow It Down became Benson's third UK top 40 hit, and ultimately found its way to a peak of #14, finishing as one of the top 40 biggest hits of the year. In my chart, it was much more instant, continuing Benson's consecutive run of #1 singles. It stayed at the top for three weeks, which was the longest run of 2024 (matched by the other songs in my top 3, albeit Beautiful Things managed it non-consecutively). Both Ghost Town and In the Stars took Benson as high as #5 in my EOY, but whilst Slow It Down has managed even higher, it can't even lay claim to being Benson's biggest hit, with an obvious even bigger track still to feature.

2 The Kid LAROI - GIRLS | 1-1-1-2-2-2-3-5-5-9-9-10-12-12-13-17-24-20-21-21-24-26-20-20-21-...

 

Summer has been dominated by The Kid LAROI in my chart almost every year since I discovered him. In fact, I discovered him in summer 2020, and the original edition of the F*CK LOVE mixtape defined not just the remainder of my summer holidays that year, but the rest of the year. Its third edition as well as mega hit STAY were the sound of 2021's summer for me. 2022 was a quiet year all round for Laroi, but 2023 saw Barbie soundtrack song Forever & Again riding high in my chart. Continuing a significant run of hits surrounding debut album THE FIRST TIME, summer 2024 was a step back up once again.

 

Laroi had teased GIRLS on TikTok and other socials for a while before release. It was notable in how uptempo and fun it sounded in comparison to the material from THE FIRST TIME, which was generally speaking much more angsty and less carefree. With the hype surrounding the track, I thought it stood a chance of being a huge hit. Obviously, some things aren't meant to be, but this excitement made the release of GIRLS the most anticipated single release of 2024 for me. I had the first verse lodged in my head for weeks - a verse being so catchy, before even hearing the chorus, is the sign of a fantastic pop song!

 

Despite this, when the full song dropped, it still felt like I was hearing much of the song for the first time. The chorus sees a more subtle vocal from Laroi, delivering a sexier, lower-pitched chorus that perfectly displays Laroi's new direction. A natural comparison would be Jack Harlow's hit singles, though I think GIRLS has significantly more energy in its delivery than any Jack Harlow track has. It was a fantastic way to kickstart a new era for Laroi (though its inclusion on THE FIRST TIME deluxe makes me question whether it will still be on Laroi's next studio album or not), and it was just the level of breezy, carefree and fun that I wanted in my summer anthem for 2024.

 

Of course, GIRLS debuted at #1 in my chart. That's no real surprise for a Laroi song, but its opening scrobble count of 160 plays is hugely impressive and almost four times the runner-up song (Laroi's own NIGHTS LIKE THIS). It spent three weeks at the top, tying for the 2024 record, and remains in my top 40 now. It doesn't quite manage to become Laroi's record-extending third EOY #1, but it gives him a presence in my EOY top 5 for a fifth year running, which is an unprecedented streak. Laroi finishes 2024 with a total of eleven EOY top 10 hits in just five years, more than anyone else by quite some margin. I can't wait to see what 2025 will bring for Laroi, but if this is the energy we're taking into the new year, then I need his new project to arrive ASAP.

My favourite chart stories tend to have a common thread between them. As a chart geek who also has a keen interest in discovering new music that hasn't appeared in the top 40, there's a particular pride when one of those artists breaks through, even if it's scraping #40 for a week. Artists like Shawn Mendes, Alec Benjamin and Conan Gray have fulfilled this role before, experiencing differing levels of success, but each still felt like a significantly exciting moment for me as a music fan! 2023 didn't really bring a moment like that for me, and it's perhaps why I don't feel like 2023 was a particularly vintage year for chart music, but the year before that, Benson Boone was a big success story.

 

In the Stars making the top 40 was a special moment, even though I'd discovered Benson through his top 100 hit Ghost Town near the start of its chart life. I was disappointed but not surprised that the follow-up singles didn't manage anything, but I did notice a certain level of excitement surrounding Beautiful Things, Benson's first release of 2024. It had been teased relentlessly on social media, with Benson's backflips and jumps impressing fans as much as the song itself did. I wasn't sure what to make of the snippets, as it sounded so different to Benson's previous material, with more of a rock influence in the chorus, which usually wouldn't be to my taste at all.

 

Thankfully, Beautiful Things didn't let me down when I heard it in full. I was impressed at how well it segued from the slow first verse into the soaring chorus as Benson's vocal perfectly conveys the desperation of the lyrics. It's an impressive show of his vocal range and the track overall felt like a notable step forward for Benson's artistry, carving out his own niche. Its chart success still took me by surprise, though. Beautiful Things debuting in the UK top 20 was a win already for me after In the Stars just missed out, but to see it peak in the top 10, and come within touching distance of #1, was so thrilling. The #1 peak was the cherry on the cake. Benson Boone becoming such a big deal felt surreal when I knew just how talented he was a fair way in advance.

 

Beautiful Things debuted at #1 in my chart in one of the busiest weeks at the start of the year, holding off competition from Boy In Space, Knox, Kygo & Ava Max and Rita Ora with ease. It spent three weeks at the top in total, has still yet to leave my top 40 after over a year, and has returned to the top 10 twice, once after the album release and once after his recent tour. In fact, I've heard Beautiful Things live three times already - twice on tour at different points in the year, as well as at Capital's Summertime Ball, where the crowd went wild for Benson. His stage presence has come on in leaps and bounds, and this track is the centrepiece for everything he achieved in 2024. It becomes his first EOY #1 hit, and it feels like a fitting one given how much I'd invested into Benson before he truly blew up, let alone everything over the past 12 months. The only other UK #1 to top my EOY was Harry Styles' Sign of the Times in 2017. Benson's already teased several new songs, so I'm hoping a new era isn't too far off - perhaps 2025 will be another big year for Benson?

I was rooting for 'APT.' to reach #1 yesterday but it just wasn't to be. Still a massive win for BLACKPINK and K-Pop in general though.

 

'Forget About Us' is my fave from your top 20. It's so infectious and so fun to sing along with. I'm also happy to see 'Girl, so confusing' so high, even if I'm the only person in the world who preferred the solo version :lol:
