Biography

After the dissolution of their first group, a mod outfit called Graduate, in 1981, childhood friends Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal (along with keyboardist Ian Stanley) set out to form England’s next big synth band. But while they were aiming for Duran Duran, they ended up with “Mad World," a darkly relatable song that offered an early sign that Tears for Fears were more contemplative than the boilerplate New Wave band. After all, they took their name from Arthur Janov's book on primal therapy and imbued their lyrics with many of his ideas, like the lines concerning dreams about dying on 'Mad World.'" Their 1983 debut album, The Hurting, earned them a lot of success in the UK, but it was their 1985 follow-up LP, Songs from the Big Chair, that introduced their sobering pop to the world. First, there was the brash “Shout,” which paired synths with a catchy chorus, metal guitars, and a rumination on political protest, and then the plaintive sing-along hit “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” which tapped into Cold War anxiety. Four years later, they returned with a soulful, Beatles-esque sound for 1989’s The Seeds of Love, featuring "Sowing the Seeds of Love," the band’s reaction against Thatcherism and most overtly political single to date. Smith left the band shortly thereafter, but Orzabal persevered, releasing Elemental in 1993, buoyed by the pop-rock anthem “Break It Down Again,” and 1995’s Raoul and the Kings of Spain. After Gary Jules’ cover of “Mad World” was featured in 2001’s Donnie Darko, Smith and Orzabal reunited for 2004’s aptly titled Everybody Loves a Happy Ending. That title may have sounded final, but it wasn’t the end. Eighteen years later, the two returned with The Tipping Point, their seventh studio album. They’d toiled on the record for years, working with several contemporary songwriters—but only when the duo sat down together and began writing on acoustic guitars did the album begin to flow. “Albums for us should be a journey,” they told Apple Music. The Tipping Point proves that if there’s a will to keep going, no journey is ever finished. - Apple Music

Biography

WALK THE MOON’s vibrant alt-pop is anything but subtle: just see their 2014 breakout hit “Shut Up and Dance”, a triumphant, synth-laced anthem that proves love and destiny are best found on the dance floor. While the Ohio band power up their melodies with a hefty dose of EDM’s fast, fidgety energy, they’re just as influenced by some of the ‘80s’ heaviest hitters—down to their name. When forming the band in 2006, frontman Nicholas Petricca settled on WALK THE MOON in reverence to The Police hit “Walking on the Moon”. He soon brought in guitarist Nick Lerangis, bassist Adam Reifsnyder and drummer Adrian Galvin, and the band self-released their 2010 debut album, I Want! I Want!. Lead single “Anna Sun”, a sizzling synth-pop ode to youth, wiggled its way into rock and alternative circles, especially after re-recording it for WALK THE MOON’s 2012 self-titled major-label debut—this time with Petricca’s spirited, staccato howls backed by a whole different lineup. Follow-up TALKING IS HARD offered an even wider view of their pop potential, with the aforementioned “Shut Up and Dance” and the stomping worldbeat celebration “Work This Body”. Such intoxicating hooks are now expected—and delivered, with feel-good moments like “One Foot”—as the band bring more heart-pumping, New Wave-inspired grooves onto the dance floor and into the future. - Apple Music

YES for Billy Gillies :cheer:

shame we already seem to be over the trance revival in the chart but it was sure fun while it lasted x

Worth reading the Billy Gillies bio, I couldn't find anything better and the hyperbole was tickling me so I kept it lol x

'DNA' :music: a proper trance tune, glad it survived the year.

'Everybody Wants To Rule The World' is an actual evergreen classic. 'Shut Up And Dance' I'm not fussed on.

(think I've commented on everything else so far except 'Leave Me Alone'... which is just OK)

Absolutely love this song! Up there for best dance track I've heard in the past decade

Biography

When reviewing Adam Port’s musical merits at this point in time, it shows that most of it took shape off the beaten path. Be it the conditions that sparked his DJ-career. Be it his approach of DJing itself or be it his artistic progression, manifested in his productions. Over the last years, Adam landed a string of much noticed releases on different labels, be it on Keinemusik, his Berlin-based label-mainstay and collective of fellow artists &ME, Rampa, Reznik and designer Monja Gentschow. Or be it on imprints like Freerange, Pets, Cocoon, Moon Harbour etc. It’s been tunes that immediately brought worldwide attention to his name. But then, instead of doing the obvious, getting a management, meeting demands, playing those big stages, delivering the hits, Adam once again did what felt best for him. Maintaining artistic integrity, releasing records that reflect where his love for music is at in one moment, not knowing where it might be on the very next release, and keeping DJ-sets not only interesting for a crowd, but also himself. That’s where he is at right now. There’s no scene-dictated tunnel view in his activities, there is only a pointed emphasis on style, on groove and sophistication. An emphasis, that, because it’s informed by Dub, Danchall, Rap, Soul or even Psychedelic Rock, is advanced enough to always shine through the inflationary characteristic of the genre as notably original. Granted: What Adam Port is laying his hands on might have its place within the parameters of House and Techno, but it’s always more than that. It’s his style. - Keinemusik

Only the second track released this year in the top 100 so far! (6th to reach its peak this year though)

was there a version of this with Camila Cabello?

cos earlier I checked her discography on wiki and this song is listed as a top 10 for her :o
