March 20Mar 20 Is it fair to say 'All About Us' was to Peter Andre as 'Sunshine' was to Gareth Gates?Actually when I think about it, their career trajectory looks kind of similar.

March 20Mar 20 I'll Be Missing You is a nice tribute song, it works for what it does.Picture of You has good Motown influence and Boyzone's best song imo. The Mr Bean connection is good too.Everybody (Backsteet's Back) has great dramatic production which would influence quite a few other pop and R&B songs.Freed From Desire has been ruined by overplay and bad versions by football fans. Much prefer her follow up.Bitch I am surprised got past the radio censors but it's a good song on the journey of reclaiming the word.C U When You Get There is a nice song.Men in Black is iconic, I remember (Send Me) Forget Me Nots appearing in the Gallup 1982 top 10 thread. March 20Mar 20 Sorry I meant the female vocal as a tribute to the sadly murdered B.I.G. but yeah you're right the fact its a Puff Daddy song means it's is tainted now. Edited March 20Mar 20 by TheSnake
March 21Mar 21 California Dreamin' I bought in 1974 and adored, I treated that as an EP and it topped my personal charts for the longest run of all-time - it's my very own Bryan Adams which meant no other classic 1997 track got to the top spot for over 4 months. Backstreet was one of the last to top my charts before that, classic pop. Even fave band Texas were kept off the top. Will Smith men In Black whats not to love, fabulous film. Peter Andre, yes he did like Katie Price, he showed us how much in the jungle...Diddy, never liked him, I tolerated Missing You for a while, before it started to grate, ruining the stalker classic converting it into a poor tribute - Faith Evans being on it gave it some credibility and emotion at the time, but I would turn it off if it ever came on radio again these days. Coolio OTOH is fab. Bitch was a huge US radio smash before it was a UK hit, another Florida holiday track.
March 21Mar 21 Author 23RD AUGUSTWill Smith remains ensconced at the top of the charts for a second week, “Men In Black” doing the business required and bringing in sales of 133,000 copies. The third movie related No 1 of the year (after LL Cool J and R Kelly) it puts 1997 behind just 1991’s tally of 4 movie connected chart toppers.Highest new entry of the week comes in at No 2 (113,000) and was briefly only slightly behind Smith at the beginning of the week. Punk anarchists Chumbawamba have been around 12 years producing music for a small dedicated fanbase with only two minor Top 75 hits in 1993 to show for it, but a move to EMI earlier this year has transformed them into a chart bound force with the commercial “Tubtumping”. Dropping their usual politicised lyrics and going mainstream has been commented on as selling out by some but no doubt it has brought the money in with their new found fame and success.Kylie Minogue will be back with a new single next month but pipping her to the post is sister Dannii who has gone blonde, turned to dance music and come back with a decidedly sexier image including a feature in Playboy, it’s certainly worked. Out of the top 10 for 4 years now “All I Wanna Do” returns her in style at No 4 (72,000) to give her the biggest hit in her 6 year career.Talking about career revivals Suede must look back at the “Coming Up” era with a smile. It has now provided them with 5 top 10 singles or 100% of the singles lifted from it, “Filmstar” the most recent cut comes in at No 9 (36,000). The real draw here (for some) is the appearance of Neil Tennant providing vocals on “Saturday Night” and “Rent” on CD2 of the single reflecting a guest spot he performed last year.Puff Daddy & Faith Evans drop 2-3 (74,000) and Gala falls 3-5 (63,000). Notorious B.I.G/ Puff Daddy remain at No 7 (44,000) and Coolio drops 9-10 (33,000), both Backstreet Boys and Meredith Brooks had albums out this week with the former making the bigger splash at No 2 as the single dips 5-6 (56,000) with a nice sales increase, whilst Brookes makes No 6 on the album front and No 8 (38,000) on the singles chart.1- MEN IN BLACK- Will Smith (133,000)2- TUBTHUMPING- Chumbawamba (113,000)3- I’LL BE MISSING YOU- Puff Daddy & Faith Evans (74,000)4- ALL I WANNA DO- Dannii Minogue (72,000)5- FREED FROM DESIRE- Gala (63,000)6- EVERYBODY (BACKSTREET’S BACK)- Backstreet Boys (56,000)7- MO MONEY MO PROBLEMS- Notorious B.I.G. (44,000)8- BITCH- Meredith Brooks (38,000)9- FILMSTAR- Suede (36,000)10- C U WHEN U GET THERE- Coolio Featuring 40 Thevz (33,000)
March 21Mar 21 Author 30TH AUGUSTThe main news this week was of course on the album charts where Oasis’ “Be Here Now” sold almost 700,000 in just three days to make No 1.Suffering a mere 8% sales decrease week on week to 122,000 means that “Men In Black” retains its top billing this week enabling a total of 437,000 in just three weeks. Already that means it has outsold “Boom Shake The Room” to become Will Smith’s biggest hit ever and will move past “Fastlove” next week to be the biggest hit that Patrice Rushen has featured on.Chumbawamba remain the nearest challenger but “Tubthumping” is faltering at retail down 18% to 92,000.Shola Ama builds on the success of “You Might Need Somebody” by re-issuing her first single “You’re The One I Love” originally a No 81 hit last year. New mixes have been added to the CD to help it sell and instantly beats the No 4 of her last single by entering at No 3 (55,000), her first album “Much Love” is out in a fortnight.A minor US RNB hit in 1995 Tina Moore’s “Never Gonna Let You Go” was picked up by producer Kelly G and re-worked into quite possibly the first garage top 10 hit. Arriving at No 7 (37,000) this week it was featured on the flip side of the white label copies of Rosie Gaines “Closer Than Close” but has taken a little longer to finally become a hit.Jon Bon Jovi has teamed up with David A Stewart again and what do you know he’s got another solo top 10 hit out of it. “Queen Of New Orleans” is new at No 10 (31,000)Puff Daddy & Faith Evans continue their slow descent 3-4 (49,000) lodging just above a static Gala at No 5 (46,000). Dannii Minogue dives 4-6 (39,000), Backstreet Boys suffer 6-8 (34,000) and Notorious B.I.G/ Puff Daddy drop 7-9 (32,000) but “Mo Money, No Problems” finally replaces “I’ll Be Missing You” at No 1 in the US.1- MEN IN BLACK- Will Smith (122,000)2- TUBTHUMPING- Chumbawamba (92,000)3- YOU’RE THE ONE I LOVE- Shola Ama (55,000)4- I'LL BE MISSING YOU- Puff Daddy & Faith Evans (49,000)5- FREED FROM DESIRE- Gala (46,000)6- ALL I WANNA DO- Dannii Minogue (39,000)7- NEVER GONNA LET YOU GO- Tina Moore (37,000)8- EVERYBODY (BACKSTREET’S BACK)- Backstreet Boys (34,000)9- MO MONEY MO PROBLEMS- Notorious B.I.G. (32,000)10- QUEEN OF NEW ORLEANS- Jon Bon Jovi (31,000)
March 21Mar 21 A couple of familiar favourites emerging with 'Tubthumping' and 'Never Gonna Let You Go' I wasn't well acquainted with 'All I Wanna Do' (the chorus rang a bell although I'm not sure if I've ever heard it in full before) but I was enjoying it on TOTP tonight! Especially the breakbeat elements to the production. The dance reinvention for Dannii was a wise pivot I think. The presenter who predicted a bright future for Stereophonics may have been on to something...4 minutes ago, Steve201 said:The crowd was quite raucous on TOTP tonight!Indeed, except for that flop boyband OTT where they were all sitting on the floor cross-legged!!
March 22Mar 22 Tubthumping is such a classic, memories of dancing/jumping to this in pubs and bars!Love the Shola Ama one, and also Suede's FIlmstar, insane they managed 5 top 10s from Coming Upalso like the Jon Bon Jovi one
March 22Mar 22 All I Wanna Do ❤️Filmstar was my favourite from this era for some time, but Beautiful Ones has overtaken it now.Tubthumping is a classic, albeit one I'd gladly never hear again at this point. Edited March 22Mar 22 by Jessie Where
March 22Mar 22 Some crackers!Tubthumping - still love this, should’ve been number 1.Filmstar - epic 5th top 10 from Coming Up - impressive for an indie act.All I Wanna Do - a breath of fresh air from Dannii, dance was the right way forward for her.
March 22Mar 22 'Tubthumping' is iconic indeed. 'Never Gonna Let You Go' is very good, almost certainly the first UK garage hit indeed with that shuffle beat, vocal effects and organ bassline.'All I Wanna Do' by Dannii is my favourite of the top 10 though. Edited March 22Mar 22 by TheSnake

I'd have preferred "Chemistry between Us" as a 5th single though I guess that may have had trouble with airplay given the subject.
March 22Mar 22 Coming Up had so many great songs, I think Lazy was my least fav singleand would have gone with Filmstar as single 4 and By the Sea as single 5but I also love She and The Chemistry Between Us
