Yes, one of those threads again, but a fascinating one, nonetheless that's rich for debate. Can you think or name those artists who are best known by one massive song that is completely left of centre to their wider back catalogue?

I'll start with an obvious one here: Extreme, "More Than Words":

Captain Sensible - Happy Talk

Ramones - Baby I Love You

Doctor and the Medics - Spirit in the Sky

Scorpions - Wind of Change

Faith No More - Easy

Bjork - It’s Oh So Quiet

Tori Amos - Professional Widow (chart peak wise)

Sarah Mclachlan - Silence (chart peak wise)

Steps’ biggest streamer is 5,6,7,8 - which I’d say is far removed from the sound that then gave them longevity
The Weeknd. It feels like a distant memory when Blinding Lights took over our lives compared with the latest offerings.

Not sure about that one, a fair amount of his discography has a similar synth pop sound (including loads of his other big hits), even as recently as ‘Dancing in the Flames’ last year and several songs on his new album.

Beastie Boys - Fight for Your Right

Ozzy Osbourne - Changes (with Kelly)

These may be debatable but here it goes anyway:

Florence Welch - Sweet Nothing / Spectrum

Lana Del Rey - Summertime Sadness (Cedric Gervais remix)

No Doubt - Don't Speak (all their other songs I've heard are more alt-leaning, whereas this felt more straight up pop/rock)

Aerosmith - I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing

Amy Winehouse - Valerie

100% on No Doubt and Aerosmith for similar reasons.

Such a shame Amy Winehouse is most known for a cover, but it is an amazing cover.

I personally think of other songs for Lana Del Rey (Video Games, Born To Die), but the Summertime Sadness Remix being big did echo the examples I gave above for Sarah McLachlan & Tori Amos

Not neccesarily his best known hit, but the one that kickstarted his career, was Daniel Bedingfield's #1 single Gotta Get Thru This as he never did a garage enthused single again, and he experimented with pop ballads, and even edgier rock numbers too.

That's a good example. I always skip Gotta Get Thru This if I'm honest.

Loved his forays into edgier songs - e.g. 'I Can't Read You'

A lot of rock bands had their biggest hit with a ballad or slower song - Aerosmith, Scorpions, Extreme as mentioned...

Not saying these bands didn't have other slower numbers but Bon Jovi's Always was kind of different to the majority of their other hits, Stereophonics' longest runner by some stretch in the top five was Handbags and Gladrags, and then you've got songs like It's Been A While by Staind, To Be With You by Mr Big, The Sound of Silence by Disturbed...

Cher wasn't exactly known for dance music before Believe and it became by far her biggest hit. She's done similar stuff since, but not really before. Sometimes a genre pivot works really well for artists.

'00s hard dance community would easily pick 'Booyah'.

This is probably just me, but all Marshmello's hits like Silence, Wolves, and Happier are nowhere sounding like 'Alone', the song that has always been his trademark.

Chainsmokers - #Selfie too, but many Golden Era fans probably remember they used to be actual big room house producers.

Armin van Buuren - This Is What It Feels Like

Avicii - Lonely Together; SOS

All Tiesto hits since 2018; at least he is much more known as a big room act and almost none of his trance songs are known pretty well, except for 'Adagio for Strings' and 'Silence Remix'.

An older example would probably be Chuck Berry. One of the most acclaimed rock-and-rollers of the 50s yet his biggest UK chart hit (and only #1 I believe) was the novelty ode to his penis, 'My Ding-a-Ling'.
