February 26Feb 26 Author 45. Tori Amos - Pretty Good Year 145ptsWriter - Tori AmosTop points - dandy* 23, GreyAsh 23, ...ready for it 20From 1994, this was the second of just three top 10 hits for the singer from North Carolina.
February 26Feb 26 That's quite surprising low for Coldplay 💔 Not their absolute best, but certainly a highlight from their recent (ish) material
February 26Feb 26 Tori 💜I'd have loved it to make it through to the final but this is a decent result given I wouldn't have expected it to make it past round 1
February 26Feb 26 Already lost my top 2 and my favourite new discovery from this semi final 😥. Though I did put Pulp artificially low and I think they'll be just fine...
February 27Feb 27 So far 'Notorious', '...Ready For It?' and 'Adventure of A Lifetime' out from my list.
February 27Feb 27 Author 44. Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Mixed Up World 159ptsWriters - Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Gregg Alexander, Matt RoweTop points - AH Gold 25, Simon. 24, Mark223 21The third wild card to drop out was taken from Sophie Ellis-Bextor's second album, 'Shoot From The Hip', and was her fifth top 10 single.
February 27Feb 27 Author 43. Yello - The Race 175ptsWriters - Boris Blank, Dieter MeierTop points - King Rollo 25, AH Gold 24, Mack 21, Liamski689 21This is the only top 20 hit for the Swiss duo who have been together since 1979 and have so far released 14 albums. If you like this but have never heard the full thirteen minute 12 inch version, I would recommend it. DLT played it in its entirety several times on his weekend Radio 1 programme.
February 27Feb 27 Author 42. Blancmange - Living On The Ceiling 175ptsWriters - Stephen Luscombe, Neil ArthurTop points - Jade 24, AH Gold 23, King Rollo 20Combining synths with traditional Indian instruments, this was Blancmange's biggest hit. They had two further top 10 singles. When the song was performed on Top Of The Pops, the line "Up the bloody tree" was replaced with "Up the cuckoo tree". It wins a tie-break over The Race by 15 votes to 13.
February 27Feb 27 Author 41. Madonna - I'll Remember 184ptsWriters - Madonna, Patrick Leonard, Richard PageTop points - marcinjaro 24, vibe 23, West 22This was Madonna's follow-up to Rain which is still to come. It was taken from the 1994 film 'With Honors'.
February 27Feb 27 Author 40. Ram Jam - Black Betty 184ptsWriters - Traditional, Huddie LedbetterTop points - Liamski689 25, gasman449 23, AH Gold 20This song goes back a long way with the first proper recording being by Lead Belly in 1939. Ram Jam's version from 1977 was their only hit with a remix returning the song to the top 20 in 1990. It wins a tie-break over I'll Remember by 16 votes to 13.
February 27Feb 27 Ah shame to lose Black Betty and The Race. In terms of Yello "Oh Yeah" should've been a bigger hit but that one is still great too.
February 27Feb 27 Argh I forgot to vote here. Black Betty definitely would have scored decent points!
February 27Feb 27 Some sad losses - Tori, Ram Jam, Blancmange and Yello just on this page, but it was a pretty stacked semi so inevitable. The highest wild card in Semi 1 came 39th so delighted to see that I’ve at least equalled that! 😎
February 27Feb 27 Three losses before today in Bloc Party, Robert Miles and Coldplay, but Blancmange is the biggest so far for me 😕
February 27Feb 27 Oh didn't realise that I had given the most points to 'Living On The Ceiling', what a tune. The #42 positioning means that being up the bloody tree is the meaning of life tbh
February 27Feb 27 That Blancmange song is great, so much fun! I also love 'I'll Remember', a classic Madonna ballad, so I'm sad to see them both drop out at this stage. 'Rain' is an even better Madonna ballad but I fear we'll be seeing it sooner rather than later.
February 28Feb 28 Buzzjack is changing definitely. Some years ago, anything Madonna released would go through to the finals but not now.
February 28Feb 28 Author 39. Madonna - Rain 185ptsWriters - Madonna, Shep PettiboneTop points - marcinjaro 25, detonate 25, Mango 24, vibe 24Speaking of which, Madonna loses her second song which means that only one of the five songs by her in the semi-finals has gone through to the final. Rain was the fifth single to be released from her 'Erotica' album.
