Brits will no doubt give a boost to some “phresh” music too

expecting resets for Messy,

Stargazing and Lose Control at the very least plus Espresso presuming that’s what Sabrina is doing

if we’re lucky additional resets for the not so stale on the charts Nothing Matters and Angel of My Dreams

Alright so to look further at it, something I find myself habitually doing is sorting the kworb chart by days charting and see how old the 45th-ish (about as much as fits on my monitor) newest song is

Really don’t think Messy will get reset

The Pitbull tour effect on Spotify has been much bigger than I would've expected:

#53 Give Me Everything

#74 DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love

#96 Timber

#150 Time of Our Lives

#189 Hotel Room Service

#194 International Love

Pitbull doing better than all the newbies really sums it all up sadly :/

Pitbull TOUR effect?

I know his GH regularly pops into the album chart, but I had no idea people cared enough about a tour (let alone for it to have an effect like this!)

Very poor, poor start to the year. This time last year seems like a happy memory, although 2024 also tailed off massively in the second half. It's a bit of a worry that the industry has seemed quite stagnant for the best part of 7/8 months now, so surely there is a big flood of hits to come in the next couple of months, as many of the big international artists release in Q1 and Q2 now, but Q1 has seemed a bit subdued in that respect aside from the odd few.

Yeh it’s grim and boring, there’s plenty of new music but it’s just not breaking through in the charts.

As usual though streams are only poor at the top and increasing for the rest as more people change to streaming services 10 years in.

Basically anything at the Brits that has an effect will likely ease past the current no1 as sales and streams are so low currently.

Can anyone clarify the effect the Brits had in previous years?

But did we have a lot of phresh music up the charts this time last year? I thought Stick Season had been #1 on Spotify for Jan-Feb

and the big songs doing crazy numbers on Spotify didn't arrive until April? I remember Forthnight did 1.6 millions and Espresso did huge numbers for ages but that was in April wasn't it?

Texas Hold Em, Training Season, Beautiful Things, Praise Jah In The Moonlight and Yes And were all in the top 10 this time last year, all of those were 2024 releases (except Praise Jah which was released in the last week of 2023). I get people's point but if old songs are actually reaching new peaks it's fine with me. It's not like Lose Control and Espresso are still in the top 10 with no 2025 releases, we have 4 2025 releases in the top 10 right now (despite Beautiful Things still being there)

Even though his previous singles haven't done much better on entry, I still expected to see Benson arrive a little higher than that.

Fingers crossed it will climb over the next few days.

There's a graph I want to make (it'll take a while), but I feel like new music is really thriving lately?? I've been surprised at the rate in which some immovable objects have been getting booted down the charts. Also those Tate McRae & Sam Fender albums that came out only a week ago have done very well I think. If you need a constant IV drip of new hits every single week, or think a song is old news because it's a couple of months old, you're gonna run into this issue, but I'm not seeing it right now.

not sure how this compares to last year as memory isn’t great

but it’s now march and we only have a handful of 2025 releases currently in the top 40:

sports car

ordinary

revolving door

abracadabra

nokia

busy woman

and if you add songs that only made the top 40 for the first time this year it’s still less than a quarter of the top 40!

denial is a river

anxiety

headlock

I often wonder recently why is the chart so slow is it more because of streaming playlists or radio stations or Tiktok videos using the same songs for too long?!

I mean some songs have a fast chart run like 'Born Again'.

Basically it's because songs are always available unlike the sales era (well mainly the CD era) where songs would be "deleted" or taken out the shops after a set period of time. Songs are always available, so.if you want to listen to Birds Of A Feather, you can do that - whenever, wherever.

Well that's just my guess anyway

It's definitely down to people sticking with songs they like for a long time. Radio has no bearing on the charts at all and streaming playlists' impact has lessened in the past few years. TikTok is the biggest factor out of those 3 but as shown by some songs sticking around on the charts longer than others even after peak virality it probably isn't the greatest influence on long chart runs.
