There was also this, where “Common People” and “Born Slippy” were 1st and 2nd respectively!

That’s a really great poll! Common People was my number 1 choice of that year at the time, and very near the top for the whole 90s.

I’ve been reading about all the 30th anniversary stuff this week, special memories for me as I saw Oasis live at Sheffield Arena on 22nd April 95, the week of the release of their 1st number one single ‘Some Might Say’ my favourite of theirs, so there was an air of celebration about the concert. We were lucky as they also played Don’t Look Back In Anger live for the very first time and Pulp played Common People for one of the first times ever (prior to release later that year), it was wonderful even then. They actually stood in for the Verve, as support, at the last minute, a decision I was very happy with having been a Pulp fan for ages before they became famous. I think this concert was their real springboard at the time.

VOTING IS NOW CLOSED Thanks to the 43 people who voted. That's eight more than in the number 6 single final last year. The results will start later this week.

Songs from the 90s have always done well in these polls. I think that's down to the average age of the posters on here.

Out of interest, do you know the average age of the forum? Most people seem fond of songs of their teens and twenties, so I’m guessing born in 70s to 80s maybe?

No idea, but I would guess somewhere between 30 and 40. A lot of the people who were quite young when they joined in the early years of the forum would now be in their thirties.

8. Simple Minds - Don't You (Forget About Me) 1333pts

Writers - Keith Forsey, Steve Schiff

Top scores - Mack 50, ChrisJK 47, marcinjaro 47, Maestro 47

Low scores - Liamski689 4, CowTzy 11, Brer 12

Average score - 31

This song was written for the 1985 film 'The Breakfast Club' and Simple Minds turned it down as they wrote their own songs. After other artists also said no, they changed their minds with Jim Kerr's wife Chrissie Hynde urging him to record it. They eventually grew to like the song and it became a staple of their live concerts. It reached number 1 in the US and is easily their most streamed song on Spotify.

With its ubiquitous guitar riff, this is the highest placed single from the 21st Century. It was the first of five top 10 hits for the duo from Detroit (I typed that as 'band' at first but have only found out now that they were a duo). 'Wichita Lineman' is not the only song from the semi-finals to mention Wichita in its lyrics, this one does as well.

Seven Nation Army - one of the most distinctive tracks of the 00s and my bronze medalist, obviously very pleased to see it in the top 10 here

Loved the White Stripes but I think Seven Nation Army maybe suffers a bit from overexposure.

Coincidentally they did an excellent cover version of one of our 6 remaining songs (I won’t say which one) on one of their early B sides and also a great live version, both of which are worth checking out.

I think it's fairly obvious which one, as it was a top 20 hit for them!

Seven Nation Army is iconic but I've heard it way too many times that it's losing its appeal, still great though. The film Don't You Forget About Me was written for is pretty rubbish (hot take?) but the song itself is a defining track of the 80s.

Pretty happy with how the top 10 is going, even if 'I'm With You' feels a little high. Aside from voter memories of the 90s, I think there just happened to be a lot of 90s classics that peaked at #7, and I'd include U2's 'One' among those although their legacy doesn't appear to have carried into the streaming era as well as some. 'Basket Case' is an awesome burst of punk energy, like most of Green Day's album Dookie which I bought a few years later, although even then their best was still to come.

Of course, sorry!

I only just found out that “(Don’t You) Forget About Me” wasn’t written by Simple Minds. It’s wonderful though - such a warm emotive track.

I’ve come to appreciate “Seven Nation Army” even more over the years: I think it’s totally timeless and transcends its genre. And even the football and political uses haven’t spoiled it for me.

Me too, I just always assumed it was!

'Seven Nation Army' must have one of the most recognisable riffs out there.

I'm sure the Marcus Collins version will be über competitive if we get to #9 hits... P

With this song finishing 63 points ahead of the Queen one, there's not much doubt about what our top ten favourites have turned out to be. I'm With You was the third single taken from the Canadian singer's debut album 'Let Go' with all of them reaching the top 10.

Whilst it should have been higher, glad to see this minimum top 10.

What an absolute beautiful insightful pop song wrote by someone so young from an album with absolutely huge impact worldwide on the music industry.

Perfection.

Superb.

Easily one of the top 10 if not top 5 or more iconic riffs and intros of all time. Used all over the world especially within the world of sport. Infectious and instantly creates a hook.

Jack White is nothing short of a Genius and Meg’s thumping beat make this all come together as a piece of music art.

This is the highest placed single from the 1970s and also by a solo artist. It was released in the US in 1973 but wasn't a hit in the UK until 1976, giving Dolly Parton what turned out to be her only solo top 40 single. A cover version by Beyonce reached number 8 last year.

Everybody Hurts is one of my favourite songs by probably my favourite band ever.

It’s also massively important to my wife and I. It was there for us during our baby son’s long illness and, after it helped us grieve his loss, it always obvious we would choose it to be played at his funeral.

A bittersweet beautiful uplifting comforting masterpiece.

But I’m afraid I find it difficult to listen to these days
