What is streaming? What are the chart rules regarding streaming?

How many streams equals one download sale?

100 plays if you are on Spotify Premium, or 600 if you are using the ad-supported free tier. However you cannot simply play a song that many times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. The number changes to 200 or 1200 plays when a song moves to ACR. For more information on the rules of ACR see this thread.

 

How much does streaming contribute to the chart?

Streaming contributes over 90% to the singles chart as a whole. Spotify counts for at least half of this, with Apple Music and Amazon also big contributors. YouTube is also big however most of YouTube's streams are at the free tier so won't count for as much.

 

Why is my fave not doing well?

Is it being promoted on a major curated playlist, and/or going viral on TikTok? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists on Spotify from a UK standpoint. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist. Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it often takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

 

My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?

Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped releases, such as the recent album impacts from Drake and Taylor Swift.

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. For the full top 200, use the link below to go to Spotify's website. You can also use the Kworb website which displays the data in an easier to read format and also contains additional information, however this is often out of date.

How often does the Spotify chart update?

It should update once every day, usually in the early afternoon - although on occasion there will be a delay.

 

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

'Sapphire' sounds just as big a smash as 'Manchild', I don't understand why he didn't lead the era with that!

Yeah Sapphire and azizam should of had there releases switched, Sapphire is definitely the strongest and most instant of the 3 he released so far, (wonder if he thought he might finally beat Alex with this only for sabrina to come along instead 🤣🤣)

I don't think quality has ever determined the success of Ed Sheeran singles but there's a first time for everything.

Ed keeps enough of an eye on the charts that he may very well have thought exactly that.

It's the better song, so it would be good to see it beat Manchild, but it's never gonna happen.

I’m sure Sabrina will get huge numbers first day but the song is a bit same old same old from her so whether it stays strong who knows. I don’t think an album filler track deserves to topple a 12 week #1 song so in the interest of fairness everybody stream ordinary IMMEDIATELY

I think Sapphire is dreadful, and actually quite like enjoyed Azizam in the end. But maybe I’m way off with how the GP will feel cos I don’t care for Ed at the best of times.

Album filler to beat song best used to cure insomnia for the past 12 weeks, stream SABRINA!!!!

Ordinary being replaced by something absolutely ordinary is a shame

But yeah I agree it's the most instant of the three!

I'd say the new Sabrina song is fairly bad... but i'd be up for any song going to the top - just to have a change at this stage.

The fact it's debuted already in the top 200 on Apple after a few hours is probably a fairly certain sign its going to the top

All apples and oranges really though does a basic song deserve 12 weeks at number 1, 🫣

I think Sabrina could be in at #2 based on the quality of the track. I can't see her doing 60k+ on week one and also I'd imagine this would be its peak considering its not as strong or that different from the previous singles.

Sapphire is decent and hope it goes top 10 to clear some off the deadwood away, but Azizam is by far the better song and most sensible choice for the lead single as it's much safer in sound!

Hope Addison Rae can also do well off the back of her album, seems to be a bit of buzz around her currently and the singles have nearly all been good thus far!

Sabrina is Chappels The Giver all over again for me! A big disappointment I was hoping for Espresso 2.0.

I know it was a AM release a few weeks ago (dont have apple music so its new to me) but personally the strongest of the newbies for me is Jade - frozen

Sabrina doesn't scream huge but more of a long running top 10, she's gonna get huge streams regardless

Sapphire is the strongest of the 3 releases from play for me will it do enough to topple Alex no but should it go top 10 id be shocked if this one misses it
