'Don't Stop Movin'' and 'Touch Me' were my 6th & 3rd favourite #1s of 2001 at the time, and I'd go with that now, if not have them higher - the latter especially, a gorgeous atmospheric house hit, and a great use of Spandau Ballet's 'Chant No. 1'. That's all my favourites out now!

"You" is my favourite and "Don't Stop Movin" is worst S Club single.

  • 'If You Come Back' would be a fair bit higher for me. A nice ballad that was and probably my favourite ballad they did.

I definitely prefer 'The Way to Your Love's to 'Pure & Simple', and 'If You Come Back' to 'Too Close'

"Touch Me" is awful, also I hate this song for blocking best Steps single on the top.

Destiny's Child – Survivor

Date Charted: 28/04/2001

Weeks at #1: 1

UK Chart Run: {1}-2-7-9-12-20-23-35-42-50-56-64-71->13

Chart Commentary

It was the first Destiny's Child single I truly loved at the time. So empowering and fierce. It felt like a big hit for them at the time, almost a defining statement of intent as a girl group that they had found their lane as an artist and were going in a new direction from previous output. The production was spot on and gave the bootylicious trio their second UK #1 single. The artists denied a higher peak in the week it was #1 included Ronan Keating, O-Town, Missy Elliott and Madonna. 'Survivor' goes down as my favourite Destiny's Child single ever and one of my big stantouts from 2001.

Yeah that's a great single, two brilliant No.1s on the trot for them and Bootylicious would have made a great third as well if it had gone a place higher, this was the era Destiny's Child really became superstars.

The chorus is of course anthemic but I love the verses more, 'you know I'm not gon' diss you on the internet, 'cos my mamma taught me better than that'.

Michelle's dramatic middle eight is great too, good to see her have a moment.

I think I'd have it lower top ten but don't begrudge seeing it do well.

Intrigued by the top two, I fear the forum may implode tomorrow if a certain song ends up at No.1, I'll get the popcorn.

It’s OK I won’t have a hernia if we have an awful #1! 🫠

There isn’t a Destiny’s Child single that I absolutely love but a lot that I like and respect a lot, of which “Survivor” is certainly one. That run of singles from “Bills, Bills, Bills” to “Bootylicious” was flawless. “Survivor” takes the girl power theme to a new level for the 21st century and while it would also be lower Top 10 for me I don’t begrudge it being this high at all.

Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya & P!nk – Lady Marmalade

Date Charted: 30/06/2001

Weeks at #1: 1

So it has arrived, the Top 2, and at #1 is NOT 'Lady Marmalade' however, as Julian pointed out, it has climbed significantly in my estimation in recent times. It was possibly this song that spawned the concept of an "all star" female supergroup with independent solo artists. It has been tried a few times since, in examples previously mentioned here. It may be the only version of this song that I enjoy, as the All Saints version didn't do much for me some years earlier. 'Moulin Rouge' was a big movie in 2001, and this song captured much from the theme. Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot takes an uncredited bow at the beginning and end too. Not to be found on any compilation anywhere, it remained a song that you had to purchase the soundtrack for to own it. Faith Hill is the only notable new release in the Top 10 on the week 'Lady Marmalade' went to #1.

Not sure how you figure results of an old rate are a spoiler for your personal ranking but OK…

Well my #1 of 2001 is nestled in that thread of replies, so if someone had taken a look they would know now what song I would be revealing as my #1 of the year. 😄

I love this version of Lady Marmalade, it makes the All Saints version seem like such a vanilla plod.

I appreciate it has the kitchen sink thrown at it vocally but I was obsessed with it at this time - delighted to see it as high as No.2.

I know it's a cover but it's a really strong one, and over half a billion streams on Spotify suggests it's still very popular, way moreso than the other covers that were everywhere in 2001. My favourite part is between Lil' Kim's rap, which I know every word of, or Christina's big vocal moment - not sure how the other three felt about her basically being given main billing and the pimp slot of the song but she really brought it vocally.

I did buy this on a single that I definitely must have worn out, and have since acquired the soundtrack album as it had some other intriguing stuff on it.

Also love the very 2000/2001 moment of closing a song by the artists' names being read out and them having a little final vocal bit each - beautiful nostalgia.

It isn’t a spoiler if someone has to click on a link and then go trawling through a thread to find it LOL.

I also find in retrospect that this was an interesting career bridge moment for P!nk - who had finished her R&B debut era some months before but was half a year away from the rockier Missundaztood album. And this production was almost sonically between the two sounds in itself, especially with some of the big vocal runs.

It's a very good, superbly executed cover which interestingly won the 2002 Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, beating It Wasn't Me and another Christina song, her duet with Ricky Martin, Nobody Wants To Be Lonely.

Anyway Wardy and Rich make a good case for the “Lady Marmalade” cover but I’m very much not a fan. If you listen to the LaBelle version it’s full of ‘70s soulful charm that is totally absent here.

I think artists like Mariah have a lot to answer for when it comes to horribly overblown versions of old songs. Thankfully covering a record and throwing as many vocal flourishes at it as possible instead of just singing the notes that are there with sensitivity is no longer in fashion. Lil’ Kim’s rap is a saving grace but I don’t even particularly like the extra lyrics.

Survivor is a tuuuuuune

Lady Marmalade was a moment and I still enjoy the song
