Kylie Minogue – Can't Get You Out Of My Head

Date Charted: 29/09/2001

Weeks at #1: 4

UK Chart Run: {1}-1-1-1-2-2-7-12-14-15-17-21-21-14-16-21-32-38-53-49-44-47-36-38-55->25

Chart Commentary

Here we are then. My personal #1 of 2001. Not much of a surprise seeing as I ranked it first some years ago in my Top 10 #1s of 2001, and it has remained there since. Achieving the most weeks at the top of the charts in 2001, totalling 4 consecutive, 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' was a pop-defining moment, not only for Kylie herself, but for the genre as a whole. It cemented Kylie as one of the ultimate pop divas and she only grew in strength from here as an artist. With over 600 million YouTube views at the time of this commentary, the song itself is widely regarded as one of the best songs of the decade. It finished at #3 in the official year end chart for 2001. During its month-long stay at #1, it denied higher peaks for artists such as Shaggy, Victoria Beckham, Steps, Liberty, Elton John, Sum 41, Michael Jackson and Linkin Park just to name a few.

That completes Wardy's rank of the UK #1s from 2001. Thank you all for following along and sharing your comments along the way.

I listened to this song in the car earlier for the first time in a bit (it's on the new Millennium #1s CD as the first track) and it definitely was a very fresh song and production at the time, a great video/outfit, incredibly catchy hook, and everything clicked for Kylie and made sure that the success of Light Years wasn't just a one off for nostalgia but that she meant business again after her fallow period in the 90s.

All that said, it was never a huge Kylie favourite of mine despite all its plaudits (although I like it) but I did love the Fever parent album and all of the other singles from it, plus really loved the New Order mash-up, Can't Get Blue Monday Out Of My Head.

Thanks a lot for running 2001 Wardy, a very interesting countdown with some fun and informative facts and some unexpected positions in places - the beauty of a personal rank though! I look forward to seeing who takes us through the reality TV minefield that was 2002.

I adore 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head', it would be my second favourite U.K. #1 of 2001 only behind 'Another Chance', with 'Touch Me' and 'Don't Stop Movin' right up there too. It's a hypnotic pop song with an appealing dark edge thanks to the obsessive themes and pulsating synths. The video is of course iconic too!

Thanks for running this Wardy, has been fun to follow. happy

Thanks for this Wardy! It’s always fun to see someone else’s opinion however much I agree or don’t.

“Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” is such a simple track but an absolute piece of brooding magic and a worthy winner certainly.

My ranking based on the scores in my thread below. All in all the conclusion is certainly that most of the great chart music in 2001 didn’t hit #1.

1 Touch Me (10)

2 Don’t Stop Movin’ (9)

3 Gotta Get Thru This (9)

4 Whole Again (9)

5 Another Chance (8)

6 Can’t Get You Out Of My Head (8)

7 21 Seconds (8)

8 Survivor (7)

9 Let’s Dance (7)

10 Eternity / The Road To Mandalay (6) (mainly this high on the strength of “The Road To Mandalay”)

11 If You Come Back (6)

12 Rollin’ (5)

13 What Took You So Long? (5)

14 It Wasn’t Me (5)

15 Pure And Simple (5)

16 Love Don’t Cost A Thing (4)

17 Uptown Girl (4)

18 Do You Really Like It? (4)

19 Mambo No 5 (4)

20 Have You Ever (4)

21 Too Close (4)

22 The Way To Your Love (3)

23 Lady Marmalade (3)

24 Somethin’ Stupid (3)

25 Angel (3)

26 Because I Got High (2)

27 Eternal Flame (2)

28 It’s Raining Men (2)

29 Hey Baby (2)

30 Queen Of My Heart (1)

Great job Wardy and watch this space for 2002 in a couple of weeks 🤫

Definitely a worthy number 1 of the year however many polls put it there, it was just light years ahead of almost everything at the time and still sounds so distinctive to this day, I was 9 at the time and I even remember it standing out then! I don't mind that version of Lady Marmalade, I grew up with it and it fits the vibe of Moulin Rouge, however messy it is with all the different vocal styles. Touch Me has unfortunately always gone a bit over my head, Another Chance is better out of the random dance number 1s this year, but Survivor is a classic.

I think this would be my top 10, roughly:

  1. Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out of My Head

  2. Roger Sanchez - Another Chance

  3. Destinys Child - Survivor

  4. Atomic Kitten - Whole Again

  5. S Club 7 - Don't Stop Movin'

  6. So Solid Crew - 21 Seconds (robbed in this countdown x)

  7. Emma Bunton - What Took You So Long

  8. Shaggy feat. RikRok - It Wasn't Me

  9. DJ Pied Piper & The Master of Ceremonies - Do You Really Like It?

  10. Daniel Bedingfield - Gotta Get Thru This

There are a fair few guilty pleasures here, but 2001 is generally quite a poor year overall with not a lot of favourites.

Thanks for hosting Wardy, would love this becoming a regular thing for a different poster per year if that is happening x

Very annoying Kylie's song at # 1, which wasn't in my weekly chart (it's very rare situation for her singles).

A fitting #1 here for Kylie - I couldn't believe it wasn't in my top 40 of the year at the time when I looked it up. Incidentally, from the same notebook (as at 2001), I also listed my top 40 of 2000, so I've edited the #1s from it into this post - there were actually 15 of them, compared to 11 in 2001, though there were a few more to choose from. It was closer in terms of the weeks those songs spent at #1, at 21 vs. 19, and had I included Kylie that would have tipped the scale in 2001's favour.

Thanks Wardy for the thread and your write-ups!

Touch Me would be in my top five with Don't Stop Movin', Lady Marmalade, Eternal Flame (soz) and the other Hear'say song (sorely underrated). For the most part I really didn't care for 2001 No.1s though and found a lot of the agreed classics very overrated, even if I can appreciate why they are loved. Whole Again and Kylie would probably be lower end of the top ten along with Another Chance, 21 Seconds and It Wasn't Me but I find a full rank for this year very difficult to do.
