Monday at 10:082 days Colourblind never really registered with me, as I didnt watch the show, so that would sadly be quite a lot lower for me, a shame as Darius was a lovely person and much missed, while Aaliyah was a tragic loss, and this was nice to see following George to the top spot, It would be around or just outside the top 10 I think. Liberty X doing so well was nice to see, and I like the biggie, prob just inside of the top 10 behind Aaliyah. Holly Valance, great sound to it but I found the novelty wore off quite quickly but would still be top 20.
Monday at 10:342 days Author 5 A super strong top 5 remains and so we lose Eminem in 5th with second best track after 'Stan' in 'Lose Yourself'. Reaching the top near the end of the year and is the soundtrack to acclaimed film 8 Mile in which Eminem makes his film debut in and gave him his first #1 in the US spending 12 weeks atop. It's an iconic track packed with grit and attitude which Eminem is accustomed to a lot in his music and is about struggle and motivating yourself to overcome the adversities.
Monday at 10:542 days Colourblind is a nice track, I'd probably put it 10-12 places lower but I'll do my full rank at the end to see. I'm glad he had a redemption arc though and got a No.1 single, and it was more original than Will or Gareth's first singles.Lose Yourself is another timeless Eminem track and probably one of the best 00s No.1 singles, the piano intro (which I remember learning in my keyboard lessons at the time) through to the gritty bassline, verse raps that are still quoted heavily to this day and almost chant like chorus all combine to make something very special.
Monday at 10:552 days “Colourblind” wouldn’t be in my Top 10 but that’s mainly because it’s a very strong Top 10. It’s a lovely charming song and head and shoulders above most of the Pop Idol stuff.Aww there goes my #1. It’s my top Eminem song, even above “Stan”. It doesn’t have the narcissistic or aggressive features of much of his work, and the way the tension builds through the track is masterful.
Tuesday at 08:321 day Lose Yourself is a powerful track, but I prefer t'other Eminem number one of the year, and Stan.
Tuesday at 09:021 day 'Lose Yourself' is a strong start to the top 5! Love the evocative piano, rocky bassline and motivational lyrics.I agree with you that it's top 2 Eminem overall along with 'Stan'.
Tuesday at 10:571 day Author 4 4th is Sugababes with 'Freak Like Me'. The first single of theirs to feature Heidi Range who replaced Siobhán Donaghy who left in the summer of 2001. It is Richard X produced and using the sample of 'My Friend's Electric' by Gary Numan and Tubeway Army (The Tubeway Army band of which features my old music tutor at college who while playing guitar on The Old Grey Whistle Test was cropped off the camera so much so it only showed one of his elbows lol). This was the first number one for the girls in April. It's got a fab groove and slick synth sound and it's just one of greatest girl groups singles of all time. What a banger!
Tuesday at 11:041 day I wasn’t keen on Freak Like Me when it was released, but I finally clicked with me about 15 years ago. I absolutely love now.
Tuesday at 11:271 day Definitely a very clever track with the cover of Freak Like Me and Gary Numan sample underneath it, a great comeback for Sugababes after Siobhan left, and a very fresh sound for British pop at the time (when you think that the other main British girlband pre-GA was Atomic Kitten, who had gone very middle of the road all of a sudden). But still, I wouldn't regard this as a major personal favourite, I'm not sure if the Tru Faith and Imaani cover from 2000 was still too fresh in my mind at this point. But I can't begrudge it doing so well, it's quite iconic.
Tuesday at 17:201 day Author 3 Quickly it's bye bye to the Sugababes as the other #1 from them that year drops out in third, 'Round Round'. Was tricky to decide which one I'd place highest but settled on this as it's a really fun banger from them too but on different days they'd keep swapping around lol. For me they were on a strong streak with 80% of their 6 chart toppers. Only let down by one..
Tuesday at 17:341 day Sugas would both be a little lower for me but they’re both excellent so no major complaints. “Freak Like Me” I think is the stronger of the two. I agree with Rich that it felt odd so soon after another cover of the song had been a Top 20 hit, but this one was a fantastically well executed mashup.I love one of the top 2 and really like the other.
Tuesday at 19:021 day Author 30 minutes ago, Last Dreamer said:Best Sugababes singles (Follow Me Home, Denial, Change) were flops.Only 'Follow You Home' would considered a flop really as the other two went top 20.
