I don't get the anti Last Christmas sentiment. Every penny it has ever made has gone to charity since its release in 1984 and that still remains the case today. It will have made millions and has all gone to good causes. It is the most popular song at this time of year so I don't get why anyone would have any issue with it being number 1 again.

People will argue it is boring for the same song to be Christmas number one every single year, especially since the Christmas number one is seen as a important part of British culture and the diversity of the songs that have gotten there is strangely interesting to the general public. There have been lots of articles about how the tradition has been "killed off" and I've definitely heard that sentiment from people I've met in person so it shouldn't really be a surprise that people want something different!

Jason you can't say that when you were happy with all of Taylor's variants and all the Fate single versions lol

Unfortunately for most of the 21st century with a few notable exceptions (2002, 2003, 2009 and you could make a case for a few more recent years) the Christmas #1 race has been unsatisfactory. There was X Factor, then a run of unappealing charity efforts, then LadBaby, and now Wham! every year which is a different kind of meh. But I can’t say it’s been consistently enjoyable since my childhood.

Simon Cowell ruined it tbh. Years of shoddy, pre determined X Factor no.qs destroyed the institution, and then it was replaced by Sausage Rolls and Sham. There is no longer a race.
