It’s the first top three made up entirely of debuts since 28 November 2014 - 568 weeks ago – when Band Aid 30’s Do They Know It’s Christmas debuted at No.1 (312,928 sales), Clean Bandit’s Real Love (feat. Jess Glynne) at No.2 (81,837 sales) and Olly Murs’ Wrapped Up at No.3 (75,081 sales). Justin Bieber (2016) Ed Sheeran (2017), Harry Styles (2022) and Sabrina Carpenter (2024) are the only acts to previously fill out all the medal positions in a week – but none of them did so with new entries alone.Swift’s feat is courtesy of The Fate Of Ophelia (No.1, 132,501 sales), Opalite (No.2, 93,017 sales) and Elizabeth Taylor (No.3, 90,636 sales), tracks from her blockbuster new album, The Life Of A Showgirl (TLOAS) which achieve their lofty positions from sales-equivalent streams alone – no track on TLOAS is available physically or for download. The Fate Of Ophelia’s DUS tally is the highest for a No.1 since LadBaby’s Sausage Rolls For Everyone (feat. Ed Sheeran & Elton John) opened its account with 136,445 units 198 weeks ago, in December 2021.Swift’s first new hits in more than a year raise her all-time tallies to 77 Top 75, 58 Top 40, 33 Top 10, 17 Top 3 and five No.1 hits. They all eclipse the previous highest consumption in any week of any track so far this year. Although not coming near the record 193,799 sales-equivalent streams that Adele’s Easy On Me derived from 19,422,185 audio streams and 4,577,520 video streams when it debuted at No.1 in 2021 (207 weeks ago), the tally turned in by The Fate Of Ophelia – from 13,580,262 audio streams and 1,271,829 video streams – is very impressive. The rest of the 12 tracks on TLOAS – all co-written and co-produced with Swedish songwriters Max Martin & Shellshock – are ‘starred-out’. Were it not for the change in chart regulations which limited primary artists to three simultaneous hits, after Ed Sheeran occupied nine of the Top 10 slots in 2017, Taylor would this week have equalled the record. The ‘starred-out’ tracks: Father Figure (80,195 sales), The Life Of A Showgirl (with Sabrina Carpenter) (72,088 sales), Actually Romantic (67,893 sales), Eldest Daughter and Wood (both 66,017 sales), Cancelled (65,721 sales), Wish List (65,349 sales), Ruin The Friendship (63,344 sales), and very much bringing up the rear, Honey (53,000 sales). Before we move on, we should mention that The Fate Of Ophelia is the 21st UK No.1 written or co-written by Max Martin. The 54-year-old Swede’s previous No.1s…Baby One More Time (Britney Spears, 1999), I Want It That Way (Backstreet Boys 1999), Oops!...I Did It Again (Britney Spears, 2000), I Kissed A Girl (Katy Perry, 2008), So What! (Pink, 2008), My Life Would Suck Without You (Kelly Clarkson, 2009), California Gurls (Katy Perry fear. Snoop Dogg, 2010), Dynamite (Taio Cruz, 2010), Domino (Jessie J, 2012), Part Of Me (Katy Perry, 2012), This Is Love (Will.I.Am feat. Eva Simons, 2012), Roar (Katy Perry, 2013), Problem (Ariana Grande feat. Iggy Azalea, 2014), Bang Bang (Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj, 2014), Love Me Like You Do (Ellie Goulding, 2015), I Don’t Care (Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber, 2019), Beautiful People (Ed Sheeran feat. Khalid, 2019), Take Me Back To London (Ed Sheeran feat. Stormzy, 2019), Blinding Lights (The Weeknd, 2020) and Eyes Closed (Ed Sheeran, 2023). The Fate Of Ophelia is also Martin’s 29th No.1 on the US Hot 100. Surprisingly, only eight Max Martin songs were No.1 in both countries, which means he has had 42 different songs reach No.1 across the two territories. Four earlier Swift No.1s in America were co-written by Martin, namely We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together (2012), Shake It Off (2014), Blank Space (2014) and Bad Blood (feat. Kendrick Lamar) all of which achieved a UK peak of No.4 apart from Shake It Off (No.2). Swift’s triple whammy means lower chart berths all round for the rest of the Top 10, namely Man I Need (1-4, 69,816 sales) and Nice To Each Other (4-8, 33,066 sales) by Olivia Dean, Golden (2-5, 64,331 sales) by Huntr/X, Ejae, Audrey Nuna, Rei Ami & KPop Demon Hunters Cast, Where Is My Husband? (3-6, 47,557 sales) by Raye, Soda Pop (5-7, 34,172 sales) and Your Idol (8-9, 28,684 sales) by Saja Boys, Andrew Choi, Neckwav, Danny Chung, Kevin Woo, samUIL Lee & KPop Demon Hunters Cast, and 12 To 12 (7-10, 28,428 sales) by Sombr. It also means exits from the Top 10 for: Tit For Tat (6-11, 27,599 sales) by Tate McRae, So Easy (To Fall In Love) (9-12, 26,908 sales) by Olivia Dean and Tears (10-13, 23,549 sales) by Sabrina Carpenter.Swift’s Actually Romantic is widely regarded as a diss to Charli XCX’s song Everything Is Romantic. Whether it is or not, Everything Is Romantic is gaining traction. Already getting some TikTok attention, the 68-week-old track dented the Top 100 for the first time last week, debuting at No.91. It now moves up to No.54 (6,966 sales), becoming XCX’s 33rd Top 75 entry. It also triggers a 13-week-high chart placing for parent album Brat, which surges 33-14 (5,032 sales). Also new to the Top 75: You’re A Star (No.47, 7,998 sales), a new collaboration between DJ Fred Again and Australian pub rock band Amyl & The Sniffers, providing his 20th hit, their first; and Wrongs (No.51, 7,484 sales), a transatlantic rap collaboration between D-Block Europe and Lil Tjay, bringing DBE their 53rd hit, and Lil Tjay his 13th.Still to make the chart in his native Norway, DJ and producer Oskar Med K continues to climb the chart here, with debut hit Make Me Feel improving 33-29 (10,615 sales). There are also new peaks for: Now Or Never (41-30, 10,596 sales) by Tkandz & Cxsper, Phantom (45-36, 9,849 sales) by EsDeeKid & Rico Ace and Dracula (42-40, 9,033 sales) by Tame Impala, all of which simultaneously become the first Top 40 hits for the acts concerned. Brighton band The Kooks are currently on tour, and played their home city this week, helping their most popular track, Naïve – No.5 in 2006 – to re-enter the Top 75 at No.72 (11,878 sales). Last in the chart in 2012, it was certified sextuple platinum last month, and has to-date consumption of 3,628,735 units.Overall singles consumption is up 1.81% week-on-week to 31,024,333 units, their highest level for 12 weeks, and 4.56% above same week 2024 consumption of 29,672,017 units. Paid-for sales are up 0.28% week-on-week at 267,595, 5.40% below same week 2024 sales of 282,878.Albums01 423,444 Taylor Swift - The Life of a Showgirl [194,596 CDs, 125,592 vinyl albums, 2,652 cassettes, 16,535 downloads, 84,069 streaming]02 24,963 Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory? Only The Beatles and Robbie Williams – with 15 apiece – have had more. Ten of Swift’s No.1 albums have come in the 2020s, twice as many as nearest challengers, Ed Sheeran.TLOAS’ consumption is the highest achieved in a week since Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) racked up 671,542 units on debut 448 weeks ago, in March 2017, and the 12th highest ever. The 10th different album to secure consumption of this level, it falls short of the all-time mark of 800,307 set by Adele’s 25 in 2015 – and that album’s subsequent 439,337 and 449,870 frames – but is the highest by a woman since then, and the highest ever by an overseas artist, eclipsing the estimated 350,000 that Michael Jackson’s Bad sold on debut in 1987. Selling nearly 17 times as many copies as any other album in the latest frame, TLOAS outsold the rest of the Top 100 combined, and singlehandedly secured a 14.39% share of the overall album market, and 48.31% of the vinyl market.TLOAS is the third album by Swift to occupy pole position in 2025, following Lover (Live From Paris), which stormed to the top in February after being released in a limited, heart-shaped vinyl edition, and TTPD, which was released in a signed, limited edition to mark its first birthday, and returned to No.1 in April. The only other act to be No.1 with three different albums in the same calendar year is The Beatles, who topped the list with Beatles For Sale, Help! and Rubber Soul in 1965. Swift has spent a grand total of 33 weeks at No.1, a total exceeded by The Beatles (176), Elvis Presley (66), Abba (58), The Rolling Stones (49), Ed Sheeran (49), Adele (42), Simon & Garfunkel (40) and Robbie Williams (38). 29 of those weeks have come in the 2020s, in which decade her nearest rival is Ed Sheeran, who racked up his 10th week at the summit three weeks ago, with Play. With The Fate Of Ophelia debuting atop the singles chart, Swift does the double for the fourth time in her career, following Midnights/Anti-Hero in 2022; 1989 (Taylor’s Version)/Is It All Over Now (Taylor’s Version) in 2023; and TTPD/Fortnight (feat. Post Malone) in 2024. The only acts to do it more are The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Ed Sheeran. For the vinyl version of the album to sell 125,592 units is staggering. It replaces TTPD (66,388 sales) as the album which has sold most copies on vinyl in a week in the Kantar (Millward Brown) chart era (1994 onwards). It also surpasses anything in the era (1983-1994) of previous chart compilers Gallup – Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s debut album Welcome To The Pleasuredome shipped 1.1m copies ahead of its 1984 release (700,000 vinyl, 400,000 cassettes) but dealer anticipation far outstripped actual demand, with only 180,000 sales being realised across the two formats on debut. ABBA’s 1980 album Super Trouper had advance orders from dealers of one million units in 1980 and The Beatles’ Beatles For Sale shipped 750,000 copies in 1964. Either, both, or perhaps another Beatles album may have secured a greater first week sale on vinyl, but it's impossible to be sure. We’re on safer ground with the expectation that Swift will become the first artist to sell a million albums on vinyl in the 21st century, as her current tally of 948,038 puts her well ahead of nearest challengers David Bowie (764,649) and The Beatles (721,258).TLOAS also did well on downloads, securing the highest sale in that format in a week for exactly a year – Coldplay’s Moon Music racked up 20,737 sales when debuting at No.1 this week in 2024 - helped by initial pricing of the regular album at £2.49 and later availability of the Deluxe Dressing Room Rehearsal Version for £4.99. And, of course, TLOAS has also broken streaming records, surpassing Swift’s own previous personal best of 78,907 set by TTPD, and also the all-time all-artist record of 78,944 (just 37 more than TTPD) set by Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) in March 2017. With only 12 tracks and a playing time of 41 minutes in its regular edition, TPOS is Swift’s shortest album since her eponymous 2006 debut, which was a minute shorter – so there’s plenty of opportunity for it to be added to with a plethora of additional tracks in later expanded editions.TLOAS’ release has a positive impact on Swift’s catalogue, with her entire album oeuvre increasing consumption, including the five that accompany it in Top 75 action, namely TTPD (39-33, 3,481 sales), Folklore (46-37, 3,185 sales), Reputation (55-54, 2,727 sales), Midnights (83-69, 2,385 sales) and Lover (76-72, 2,330 sales). James Morrison is back in the Top 10 with a studio album for the first time in 10 years, with sixth studio set, Fight Another Day, debuting at No.5 (7,844 sales). In the interim, his last studio album, You’re Stronger Than You Know, peaked at No.14 in 2019, while his 2022 Greatest Hits set reached No.6. His first album for Cooking Vinyl, Fight Another Day consists entirely of new songs co-written by Morrison and extends his chart career – in which has had two No.1s and seven Top 15 albums with total consumption exceeding 3m units – to more than 19 years. No.1 for 10 weeks in its initial chart run in 1995/1996, Oasis’ second album, 1995’s (What’s The Story) Morning Glory reached its highest chart placing in nearly 29 years in July, reaching No.2 when the band’s Live ’25 Reunion Tour was in full swing. 13 weeks on, its 30th anniversary is marked by the release of deluxe editions across CD, vinyl and digital, prompting it to revisit that position, surging 21-2, with consumption up 276.44% week-on-week to 24,963 units. That is its highest tally for 1,502 weeks (nearly 29 years), and elevates its all-time consumption to 5,551,710 units. Oasis’ compilation Time Flies: 1994-2009 remains in the Top 10, holding at No.6 (7,825 sales). The rest of the Top 10: The Art Of Loving (1-3, 22,727 sales) by Olivia Dean, Man’s Best Friend (2-4, 13,954 sales) by Sabrina Carpenter, The Highlights (9-7, 7,717 sales) by The Weeknd, 50 Years: Don’t Stop (10-8, 7,626 sales) by Fleetwood Mac, +-=÷× Tour Collection (8- 9, 7,490 sales) by Ed Sheeran and You’ll Be Alright Kid (7-10, 7,479 sales) by Alex Warren.Exiting the Top 10: Vie (5-51, 2,771 sales) by Doja Cat, Saving Grace (4-85, 2,119 sales) by Robert Plant and Perrie (3-121, 1,721 sales).Combining elements of indie, alt-rock and punk, Northern Ireland’s Ash and Scotland’s Idlewild have both had long and distinguished careers, with each having a trio of members whose involvement with the group dates back 30 years or more.Ash, who topped the chart with 1996 debut 1977 (sic) and 2001 third album, Free All Angels, score their ninth consecutive Top 50 studio album – their entire output – with Ad Astra (No.15, 4,911 sales), while Idlewild’s eponymous 10th studio album brings their eighth chart entry (No.16, 4,796 sales), and their highest chart placing for 20 years. Also new to the Top 75: Blue Sky Mentality (No.24, 4,026 sales), the debut album for London-based indie duo, Good Neighbours; Not For Lack Of Trying (No.42, 3,042 sales), the fifth chart entry for Dodie but only her second full-length album, following Build A Problem, which reached No.3 in 2021; Archangel (No.43, 2,967 sales), the first album by 28-year-old Irish house/electronic DJ and producer Evan Campbell as Kettama; With Strings: Live From Liverpool (No.50, 2,793 sales), the first concert album by Warrington rock quartet Starsailor, whose six studio albums have all made the Top 30; and We’re Never Getting Out (No.71, 2,339 sales), the seventh album and sixth chart entry for Norfolk rock band Deaf Havana. Apologies to mysterious Liverpool rapper EsDeeKid, whose album Rebel made its unheralded Top 75 debut last week. The album, which was released in June, increases consumption for the 10th week in a row in the latest frame, advancing 64-36 (3,311 sales), and is home to his single Phantom, a Rico Ace collaboration, which simultaneously makes its first appearance in the Top 40. Equalling the record for most consecutive weeks at No.1 on the compilation chart since its 1989 inception – as set by the Wicked soundtrack in March – Netflix animated fantasy film K-pop Demon Hunters tops the list for the 16th time in a row on consumption of 19,776 units (3 CDs, 400 digital downloads and 19,373 sales-equivalent streams). Thanks to the Swift effect, overall album sales are up 15.35% week-on-week to 2,942,015 units, their highest level since Christmas week 2018 (355 weeks ago), and 10.54% above same week 2024 sales of 2,661,465. Physical product accounts for 632,313 sales, a 42-week high, and 21.49% of the total. Friday at 17:371 day Damn who ever would have thought last year that Olivia Dean would prevent Taylor from a full top ten.
