Biography

When it comes to growing up in public, the man known worldwide as the King of Pop wrote the book. Born in Gary, IN, in 1958, Michael Jackson became the biggest-selling, most broadly beloved singer on the planet, but when he started his career, he was just the kid trying to catch up with his big brothers. In 1964 he started playing percussion in The Jackson Brothers, but by the time they became the Jackson 5 the following year, little Michael was already contributing lead vocals. The group became a Motown hit machine in 1970 with pop-soul smashes like “ABC,” “The Love You Save,” and “I’ll Be There.” Michael’s undeniable vocal charisma made a solo career inevitable, and his began in 1971. He scored a few major hits early on, but he really exploded with 1979’s Off the Wall, a funk-pop-disco marvel that marked Jackson’s full musical maturation. Its 1982 follow-up, Thriller, became a full-blown international phenomenon with mega-singles including “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” and the title track, literally becoming the best-selling album ever. Following it wasn’t easy, but Jackson managed to keep his vision alive through four more albums and several more hits over the next two decades, until his passing in 2009. - Apple Music

Imagine the meltdown if Mr Brightside did 🤣 shame OCC refuse to reset it 😢

The Michael movie trailer was better than I expected. The casting eclipses the Springsteen one at least.

Let’s be honest, this should've been Thriller/Heads Will Roll 😌

Still the king of pop ❤️ the reset was worth it!

I wonder if “Golden” or “Ophelia” will be #1 given how the Demon Hunters tracks have been fading this week!

Biography

Lily Allen was born in 1985 into London showbiz royalty—her dad, Keith, is a veteran actor—but her family connections by no means guaranteed her stardom. Sure, by the time she was 20, Allen had already landed a deal with major UK imprint Regal Recordings (Coldplay, Gorillaz), but wanting to take the speed of her ascent into her own hands, she turned to the only outlet available to enterprising artists at the time: MySpace. After Allen posted demos to the nascent site and became one of pop’s first social-media sensations, Regal put the full weight of their promotional machine behind her. The arrival of Allen’s 2006 debut, Alright, Still, couldn’t have been better timed. Her reggae-infused rhythms and rap-schooled swagger provided a sun-kissed antidote to the aloof garage-rock lads filling up the pages of the NME, while her acid tongue—whether nonchalantly describing an old lady getting mugged on “LDN” or revelling in an ex’s misfortune on “Smile”—introduced a new level of candour and rancour to British pop. As Allen explains to Apple Music, “Because I don’t play instruments live, I’ve always felt like the singing and writing is my part of the band. And if that’s your bit, then why would you not do it properly?” Allen’s combination of eloquence and attitude has made her a natural foil for hip-hop artists, as she’s supplied the deceptively sweet hooks to T-Pain’s 2011 hit “5 O’Clock” and Stormzy’s 2017 single “Cigarettes & Cush”. And while struggles with fame, addiction and relationships have limited her output to roughly two albums per decade, each one has been a Top 10 event, with 2018’s post-divorce/post-sobriety salvo No Shame reaffirming Allen’s reputation as one of UK pop’s savviest synthesists and fearlessly blunt lyricists. - Apple Music

Due to my strong personal convictions, I wish to stress that the number 9 record this week in no way endorses a belief in the occult.
