  • Well, that was great fun to put together! I typically have a history for walls of text when it comes to countdowns (in recent years: on an annual basis in the End of Year section of the forum) but I

  • Also don’t forget 2006 saw the birth of Buzzjack so it’s special because of that!

A blistering and not enitrely surprising No.1 Jade, this was such a massively surprising UK No.1 to me at the time but a welcome one too, very different to all of the other chart toppers around the time, although 2006 definitely had some good variety of genres at the top. Welcome To The Black Parade fits a lot into its runtime (it could easily have been far longer - the intro and then from three minutes in is particularly epic), and it's good that an 'emo' rock song did get to No.1 in the UK in the end, as it was such a huge genre but the likes of Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco never got there. My sister was very happy about this, and the album had some other great singles on it too.

We share seven in the top 10. Here is my rank, I actively love the top ten, enjoy everything down to the Arctics and don't mind down to Chico. No at the bottom three. The songs in bold topped my personal chart that year - quite unusual to have so many shared with the UK chart. Patience was No.2 for me for three weeks but ran into Rock Steady by All Saints (my second favourite song of the year after Shakira), and then into Take That's own Shine as well, which hit No.1 for me as soon as I got the album, but I'll get into that in the 2007 thread...

  1. Shakira - Hips Don’t Lie (feat. Wyclef Jean)

  2. Lily Allen - Smile

  3. Nelly Furtado - Maneater

  4. Take That - Patience

  5. Gnarls Barkley - Crazy

  6. Madonna - Sorry

  7. Fedde Le Grande - Put Your Hands Up For Detroit

  8. My Chemical Romance - Welcome to the Black Parade

  9. McFly - Star Girl

  10. Meck - Thunder In My Heart Again (feat. Leo Sayer)

  11. Scissor Sisters - I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’

  12. Leona Lewis - A Moment Like This

  13. Sandi Thom - I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair)

  14. Justin Timberlake - SexyBack

  15. Arctic Monkeys - When the Sun Goes Down

  16. Razorlight - America

  17. Beyoncé - Déjà Vu (feat. Jay-Z)

  18. Ne-Yo - So Sick

  19. Orson - No Tomorrow

  20. Notorious B.I.G. - Nasty Girl (feat. Diddy, Nelly, Jagged Edge & Avery Storm)

  21. Chico - It’s Chico Time

  22. Akon - Smack That (feat. Eminem)

  23. McFly - Don’t Stop Me Now / Please, Please

  24. Westlife - The Rose

Thank you for a wonderful, very informative countdown Jade, especially coming straight off the back of BJSC. Can vouch that it isn't a light workload 🤣 Glad you're feeling better now too. Looking forward to 2007 whenever that may be!

A strong top 2 to finish on there Jade. I didn't expect 'Crazy' to last quite that long on top mind but what a mammoth hit that was. Weird how they didn't keep up the momentum though after 'Smiley Faces' really.

'Welcome To The Black Parade' was a unexpected #1 imo too. Not sure if I expected it to go all the way (probably a top 10 scrape if anything) but it truly is a classic modern day rock anthem and this album is the only one I have and used to spam it lots too. So many good album tracks but I really really liked the 3 singles that came after too, 'Teenagers' especially.

It's been thoroughly enjoyable reading this thread and covering the best year for chart music though not quite as stellar year for #1's for me looking back over for ranking them oops lol.

1 Madonna - Sorry

2 Scissor Sisters - I Don't Feel Like Dancin

3 Meck & Leo Sayer - Thunder In My Heart

Rock Steady is an absolute tune! Such a great comeback single.

I have memories listening to it on the ‘listening post’ at my local HMV, not long before it shut down.

As detailed and perceptive analysis' as always Jade, a pleasure to read and illuminating! Arctic Monkeys was a bit of a let down for me after ibylgotd, but it's not bad, Maneater was fab, as was Hall & Oates', though Say It Right was my classic of this Nelly F period - that's not a dance banger though! Crazy is a bonafide dance monster, Cee-Lo vs the Maus just worked as one-off perfectly, and is a track I never got tired of hearing - not easy for a hit of that scale. My Chemical Romance, not generally a band I go for, by and large, but this single was excellent - I first heard it in Florida and went big for it getting back just in time for it to go big in the UK. I wouldnt call it my ROTY but it'd be up the top end. Thanks for running this!

OK I'll let you have 'Welcome to the Black Parade' as number 1. 😄

It is a great song. I didn't pay much attention to it or the emo genre back then. However, on the grounds of nostalgia, I have a soft spot for it.

Roll on 2007!

Nice choice of #1. I can see why people like it so much and actually I like it a lot more now than I did back when it was released, I never really gelled with the whole emo vibe of a lot of these types of bands so I didn't give them much attention. These days I can definitely appreciate it as a good #1 though, I like the structure and ambition of it and it is good that they got a #1 so that the genre had its moment.

Personally I think I'd have ranked them something like this:

  1. Gnarls Barkley - Crazy

  2. Scissor Sisters - I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’

  3. Nelly Furtado - Maneater

  4. Madonna - Sorry

  5. Take That - Patience

  6. Justin Timberlake - Sexyback

  7. My Chemical Romance - Welcome to the Black Parade

  8. Arctic Monkeys - When The Sun Goes Down

  9. Shakira - Hips Don’t Lie (feat. Wyclef Jean)

  10. Fedde Le Granfe - Put Your Hands Up For Detroit

  11. Lily Allen - Smile

  12. Orson - No Tomorrow

  13. Razorlight - America

  14. Notorious B.I.G. - Nasty Girl (feat. Diddy, Nelly, Jagged Edge & Avery Storm)

  15. Akon - Smack That (feat. Eminem)

  16. Beyoncé - Déjà Vu (feat. Jay-Z)

  17. Meck - Thunder In My Heart Again (feat. Leo Sayer)

  18. Sandi Thom - I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair)

  19. McFly - Star Girl

  20. Ne-Yo - So Sick

  23. McFly - Don’t Stop Me Now / Please, Please

  24. Westlife - The Rose

Really enjoyed following this Jade so thank you for undertaking it <3

This thread has been a great read, I am in awe at being able to find so many words about every song, a lot of fascinating backstory about My Chemical Romance that I did not know about there. 'Welcome To The Black Parade' is easily my #1 of the year as well and one of my favourite #1s of all time, still amazing to think it was ever possible for a song like that to be a #1, almost unthinkable that something like it could even go top 10 in current year.

'Crazy' on the other hand is the kind of song that feels like it'd be destined to be a huge hit almost no matter when it came out, a very omnipresent and timeless sounding song. I was a little bit surprised at how high it was for you on here but it makes sense the more I think about it.

Think this would be roughly my ranking:

1 Welcome To The Black Parade

2 Hips Don't Lie

3 Patience

4 No Tomorrow

5 When The Sun Goes Down

6 Crazy

7 Maneater

8 I Don't Feel Like Dancin'

9 Sorry

10 Thunder In My Heart Again

11 I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair)

12 America

13 Star Girl

14 Put Your Hands Up For Detroit

15 SexyBack

16 So Sick (turns out I'm not ranking this any higher than you did after all x)

17 Smile

18 Nasty Girl

19 Déjà Vu

20 It's Chico Time

21 Smack That

22 Don't Stop Me Now

23 A Moment Like This

24 The Rose
