One of Us is one of the best abba songs of all time shame it stalled at number 3 , would of been nice for it to be christmas number 1 but the number 1 is a tune and half itself , cliff can get in the bin though

*Double A-side with "Everything She Wants"

Christmas number ones: Perfect - Ed Sheeran, Don't Stop Me Eatin' - LadBaby, Sausage Rolls For Everyone - LadBaby ft. Ed Sheeran & Elton John

Christmas number twos: River - Eminem ft. Ed Sheeran, All I Want For Christmas is You - Mariah Carey, Merry Christmas - Ed Sheeran & Elton John

And the other big classic drops out! "Last Christmas" has been in every position from 1 to 7 on the Christmas chart at some point, being Christmas number 3 more times than any other song. Wham's 1984 classic was famously the biggest-seller to not reach number one until its ascent to the top at the start of 2021, originally being held off the top by the then-bigggest seller of all time from Band Aid. In 2016 George Michael passed away on Christmas Day and the next year a Christmas number one campaign to honour the late star was started. Two songs sung by a certain ginger titan got in the way. Since George's death the track has cemented itself as the streaming public's favourite Christmas song alongside Mariah Carey's classic. It was stuck behind Mariah and the third LadBaby single in 2020, while in 2021 it finally moved ahead of Mariah and ended up behind two versions of the same song, both featuring the same man who got in the way in 2017. Two years later it finally achieved the Christmas crown, doing it again in 2024 and likely multiple more times in the future.

Not ed being on 4 out of the 6 songs that made wham christmas number 3 3 times 🤣🤣🤣

Tbf i enjoy all the christmas 1s and 2s except AIWFCIY

Edited by 777666jason

Ed was only on 4 of those 6 songs as he wasn't on 'Don't Stop Me Eatin'' (or indeed AIWFCIY), still quite a coincidence, also I don't think Wham! have been the Christmas #4 (yet) but quite the domination all the same.

I'm glad The Pogues have come out on top from the usual 3 Christmas songs - aside from it being my favourite of them, #3 in Christmas week of 2005 is the highest it's gone during the time I've known it and been actively following the charts.

Yeah a lapse of memory for me there, Mariah and the Pogues were Christmas number 4s and they've appeared in the 2 and 3s before so that probably threw me off (also I wrote the entry on Wham at midnight 😂) thanks for pointing it out!

And doesn’t it only jointly hold the record with Mariah for the most Christmas number 3s - I think she has held that three years in a row, hasn’t she?

I hate nitpicking, because I really love your chart!

Christmas number one: When You Believe - Leon Jackson

Christmas number two: What A Wonderful World - Eva Cassidy & Katie Melua

The second of three Leona Lewis appearances in the rate, "Bleeding Love" was the lead single from her debut album Spirit. She was of course Christmas number one the previous year after winning The X Factor. Originally written by Ryan Tedder for Jesse McCartney, "Bleeding Love" was the first non-winner's single by an X Factor winner to reach the top and spent 7 weeks at number one throughout the final months of 2007. It ended the year as its biggest-selling single and sold over a million copies during a period with low sales. It also reached number one in America in 2008 and was the biggest single of that year worldwide, making her the first X Factor contestant to enjoy a global breakthrough.

Yes it does, another victim of me writing at midnight and forgetting the most recent Christmas chart 😅

I voted for all of the remaining 10 apart from the eternally overrated Bad Romance. Actually 7 of my top 8 are still here (only casualty so far was Little Drummer Boy).

Especially pleased to see D-Bed make it this far!

Bleeding love is a tune but , Leon Jackson was the rightful christmas number 1 with the far more superior song 🙌

Edited by 777666jason

An excellent top 10 indeed. I did want to reward #3s that peaked there for the most part so put a lot of number 1s/2s lower, although I'll never qualm at Pogues getting top 10 (and beating Mariah and Wham as they should x), pleased to see the choice of Leona #3 though as I'm really not a fan of the other two!

Shame One of Us couldn't quite make the top 10, also a lot of love for Final Countdown, You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling and Muller yogurt classic, Ain't Got No (I Got Life) x

Meh results! Im here only for the 5 most recent songs left.

I'll never understand why Stop the Cavalry is this high. Urgh

Edited by Jason

I suppose it did valiantly enough for a pre-1970 song but aww at 'Ain't Got No / I Got Life' not quite making the top 20 - admittedly I think I also first heard it from the Müller advert but it's a life affirming jam nonetheless. x Shame Charles & Eddie just missed out too, two of my double figure votes there. I only voted for two of the 11-20 ranked songs though, Europe also getting double figure points from me but they have finished probably around where I'd have predicted them to (it's very boomer rock but a classic nonetheless x) and Leona's 'Run' is a good cover, I do still slightly prefer the original but would happily listen to either. The Righteous Brothers came close to my points too. Happy to see Wham! and Mariah both outside the top 10, they're perfectly listenable but both among the weaker songs in the main Christmas classic canon for me so I really hope something breaks their stranglehold on the top 2 soon. The Pogues rightfully victorious over both here *.* (as well as Jona Lewie and, a bit more surprisingly, Band Aid. Plus Leona I guess).
