Sorry’s Not Good Enough / Friday Night - McFly

3/11/2006 {3}-20-25-58->4

Christmas number one: A Moment Like This - Leona Lewis

Christmas number two: Patience - Take That

2006 produced our 3rd favourite Christmas #2 but doesn’t fare so well in the #3s, though it is loved by the forum’s Jasons.

The British group McFly had an astonishing run of 15 consecutive Top 10 hits in the 2004 to 2008 period. This was the 11th of them, though by this point they had already become a fanbase act with high peaks and huge second week drops. The second A side appeared in the film “Night At The Museum”.

You Won’t Find Another Fool Like Me - The New Seekers

24/11/1973 35-7-3-4-3-3-2-2-{1}-5-3-8-20-27-33-39->16

Voters: Last Dreamer (20), DaTilt (16), Sausage Rollo (7)

Christmas number one: Merry Xmas Everybody - Slade

Christmas number two: I Love You Love Me Love - Gary Glitter

The New Seekers were a British group who had a run of big hits in the early 1970s and were so named as they were intended to appeal to the same market as 1960s group The Seekers.

At Christmas this was stuck behind a wholesome classic and a not so wholesome not so classic. However in the New Year it climbed to become their 2nd #1, the 1st being their most famous song “I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing”.

"You Won’t Find Another Fool Like Me" is my favourite New Seekers song and in top 10 best singles from 1970s decade.

Before You Go - Lewis Capaldi

Christmas number one: I Love Sausage Rolls - LadBaby

Christmas number two: Own It - Stormzy / Ed Sheeran / Stormzy

This was a bonus single released from his incredibly successful “Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent” album which had already yielded 4 huge hits. It seemed destined to only be a #2 hit until a physical push in the New Year too it to the top, a strategy he would pull off several more times later on. Nonetheless you can’t really argue with that chart run and it’s now sold nearly 3 million units.

Solid Gold Easy Action - T. Rex

Christmas number one: Long Haired Lover From Liverpool - Little Jimmy Osmond

Christmas number two: My Ding-A-Ling - Chuck Berry

I love the driving rhythm on this - what a shame it couldn’t save us from that utterly abysmal Christmas Top 2! English glam rock group T. Rex had 7 Top 2 hits in the space of 2 years in the early 1970s, of which this was the last.

Christmas number one: Do They Know It’s Christmas? - Band Aid II

Christmas number two: Let’s Party - Jive Bunny And The Mastermixers

This came at the end of an extraordinary period for the Australian actor and singer in which he had 5 Top 2 hits in 12 months. I concur with the consensus that this is one of Jason and SAW’s best songs, and think it would have been a preferable Christmas #1 to either of that Top 2.

Always love T Rex and Bolan but Solid Gold Easy Action is probably my least favourite of their 10 top 5 hits. Still a good song though and shame to lose it before the top 40 which is where stuff really gets interesting!

Only one of the recent batch i like is Before you go, although I'm glad it didnt hang around too long like SYL

Ah, just lost my first vote with T Rex. That top 40 looks great though!

So Jason Donovan did a clean sweep of Christmas top 3 positions within 12 months (and within 15 months of his first chart appearance).

1988 Christmas #2

1989 Christmas #1 and #3

Has anyone equalled or beaten these records?

George Michael did this in 1984-1985.

1984 #1 and #2

1985 #3

Who has has done the clean sweep, and has anyone done it within 12/13 months?

I imagine Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Ed Sheeran, Elton John and Kylie Minogue have done the Christmas Top 3 medal positions (correct me if I’m wrong). Anyone else if we include charity records?

Julian_ and gasman449, I’m really enjoying the countdown so far but I’m going to be out of the country for a while now. So, I’m afraid that I’m likely to miss the rest of it and won’t be able to comment as you work through it. I’ll certainly catch up on it all when I’m back but wanted to thank you for all your hard work in advance!

Number 4s for next year maybe??🤔

Thanks Jaz, glad you've enjoyed it so far!

Number 4 rate is looking likely, I'll have to pull a list together though
