I love the staying power of Shania Twain.

Oh Lolly, that takes me back to reading the UK singles charts in the paper in the late 90’s and thinking ‘Who on earth is Lolly?’

Some thoughts on the last few shows/weeks: Shame Britney didn't perform on her first week at the top, but what a powerhouse single ...Baby One More Time was indeed, it just blew the competition away.

That revised chart always irked me, I really don't like the re-writing of history. How did it come to be at the time that so much data was missing?

Here is an article from the following week's Music Week.

In the revised chart for the 10th July, only 11 songs in the top 40 remained unchanged

Those were the songs at 1 , 2 , 5 , 10 , 11 , 15 , 17 , 21 , 23 , 34 , 36

Shania Twain benefitted as she was up on the incorrect chart and got another play on Top of the Pops - in fact, she should have been a non mover so may not have got an extra play.

It's interesting that Blur didn't move at all in the end though, as I remember the fuss at the time about them supposedly missing the top ten due to lost sales.

I don't understand why it missed the top ten on the other hand, one of my favourite Blur songs!

Interesting on that second week there were barely any new entries in the whole top 40 (and only one in the top ten), had the Gary Barlow song been expected to go top ten? Must admit I wasn't following his career closely at the time but it didn't feel like he was high profile to me then.

Beverley Knight charted higher than him with Greatest Day that week, one of my favourites from her, effortlessly summery and joyful with great vocals.

I remember there being a little fuss about the Gary Barlow comeback-his first single since Robbie went stratospheric-but I don’t really remembering hearing it outside of the chart. The song seemed pretty on brand for the time hearing it now but the performance reminded me that Gary was a terrible solo pop star.

Beverley Knight though, what a performance that was! Truly an artist who deserved more.

The schedules have updated to include the TOTP line-up for Friday 17th April:

  • 10th September 1999

  • 17th September 1999

So, unsurprisingly, that time jump suggests most of August is being canned indeed.

10th April still has 2x Scott Mills episodes listed so this presumably needs to be updated to 26th August and 3rd September

Really struggling to get my head around this news story 💔

Also 'Iris' all the way down at #26, shame that never got the recognition it deserved.

I love Iris - beautiful song.

Here is a question.

Bearing in mind Iris is number 56 this week in 2026 on it's 209th week in the top 100 , if I want to discuss Iris, do I do it here or on the current chart forum ??!!

What future episodes are likely to be skipped then?(For whatever reason). I’m trying not to give any chart spoilers….

Off the top of my head, aside from Scott Mills, I can think 4 weeks in the summer of 2003 because of a #1, and another few weeks in spring 2005 because of the #1 video, plus one week #1 at the start of 2006. Savile is due to host an episode in 2001 too.

Plus Savile was on the last ever episode so guessing that won’t be shown.
